After months spent in the hot sands of the Silverwastes, then the muggy oppression of Maguuma, Brisban felt almost like paradise. It would have been better if she’d been able to walk under her own power. But the necromancer who’d caught her along the side and back had included a particularly nasty curse on her blade. The Pact insisted she return from the war zone. She could do nothing but oblige.

At least the camp where she was being tended was quiet. There was trouble brewing back in Kryta, she’d heard. Something about the centaurs. She tended to keep her head down and focus on her personal mission, claim orders from higher up from anyone who stopped her. She had the look of a Whispers agent playing at being in the Vigil. It was a convenient ruse and she never said anything to the contrary. 

Pact members called her Suzie or Argent. That told her all she needed to know right there. If they didn’t know her true name, they didn’t need to know her true mission. 

But she’d heard other things, whispers from those she or her father had trusted, about Kryta. She wanted to check them out, find out if the rumors were true. 

For now she was stuck convalescing, which would have been intolerable if not for the herbalist who visited her daily. The woman was red-headed and freckled, but fiery when a patient wouldn’t take their medicine. She had a kindness to her that was hard to see; what her father would have called, “picking up strays.” Her name was Aerie and she was pretty sure she was falling in love with her.

The woman called her Suzie, but maybe that could change. They spent Aerie’s off time together, mostly with her listening to Aerie’s tales, her acerbic sense of humor and dry wit. And sometimes they would kiss, but not with the desperate passion of sating a need, but with laughter between breaths and whispers in the dark. 

Aerie knew war. She knew hardship. If anyone could cope with a life lived on the move, it was her herbalist. She would tell her everything. In the morning, she would tell her.
