“How can I trust you?”

“You’ve already proven that what you say you stand for isn’t what you actually believe,” he said dismissively. “I think we’re better off just ending this partnership now.”

Her voice was a mere whisper, damning in the City of Secrets, where all lies and secrets dropped in volume. “I think you are missing the point, Wayland. Do you care so much about what I say and do in public? Or do you care that you are paid and paid well?”

Wayland shook his head, braid swaying gently behind him. “How am I supposed to even believe that?”

Another woman, tall and dark of hair and skin, stepped from the shadows. It was enough to make Wayland take a startled step back, his cape rustling as his messenger’s wings made ready to be used, to propel him up and away if necessary.

“I do not suffer from the same malady as my client,” the woman said, her voice as dark as her skin. “If you do the job, Wayland, you will be paid handsomely.”

Wayland straightened his cloak, his wings settling beneath as he tried to play it cool. “Alright. I can accept that, then. What’s the package and where does it need to go?”

Handy

She kept a few things around for emergencies. A stiff wire, a bit of string, a needle and thread, a magnet. You never knew what was coming next and plans…plans had a way of falling apart, in Key’s experience.

The house had certainly looked abandoned. And when she’d pulled Ryan inside out of the rain, he wasn’t protesting too much. Well, he was speaking a lot of protests, but Key had learned to read them. He didn’t mean them most of the time.

It was cold, still, but at least it was dry. “Oh good, it’s the kitchen,” she said brightly.

Key moved about the room and pulled out a tea kettle. “I’ll get us hot water. Go look fer the blankets?”

He left the room and Key went to the stove. She lit the wood inside it with her magic, a flash of fire that she had to quickly wrap her hand around before it got out of control. Then she pumped water into the kettle and set it on the burner.

Then she went to the liquor cabinet, a grin on her face. Carefully, she pulled a piece of wire out of one pocket, a needle out of the other, and went about picking the lock.

It didn’t take more than a few minutes, but that was enough. Too much, really.

“Hey! What are ya doin’ in the master’s house!” came the bellowed voice from the stairs.

Key cursed, grabbing a bottle of something amber and dashing toward the living room. Ryan was coming out of another bedroom, arms full of blankets. He looked distinctly confused.

“It ain’t empty!” she cried, grabbing his arm. “Run!”

He managed to keep a pair of the blankets and that was enough to keep them both warm in the hollow of a tree overnight.

Key took a swig of what turned out to be very fine whiskey and passed it to him. “At least this has come in handy, eh?” she chuckled.

A list of prompts for October. Write something short (or long) and tag it with #fictober18. Let’s see your creativity!

Prompts:

“Can you feel this?”

“People like you have no imagination.”

“How can I trust you?”

“Will that be all?”

“Take what you need.”

“I heard enough, this ends now.”

“No worries, we still have time.”

“I know you do.”

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

“You think this troubles me?”

“But I will never forget!”

“Who could do this?”

“Try harder, next time.”

“Some people call this wisdom.”

“I thought you had forgotten.”

“This is gonna be so much fun!”

“I’ll tell you but you’re not gonna like it.”

“You should have seen it.”

“Oh please, like this is the worst I have done.”

“I hope you have a speech prepared.”

“Impressive, truly.”

“I know how you love to play games.”

“This is not new, it only feels like it.”

“You knows this, you know this to be true.”

“Go forward, do not stray.”

“But if you cannot see it, is it really there?”

“Remember, you have to remember.”

“I felt it. You know what I mean.”

“At least it can’t get any worse.”

“Do we really have to do this again?”

“I’ve waited so long for this.”

Go forth and write!

“People like you have no imagination.”

Fayne punched him. As tall as she was, he was taller, with muscles to match and tusks as big around as her thumb jutting up from his mouth. It was not her smartest decision of the night, but then she usually made bad decisions after drinking.

“Don’t ya talk t’me like that ya bloody toad!” she yelled at him. Again, not a good decision.

His first hit knocked her flat and Fayne had to roll to avoid his stomp where her middle had been. She grinned at him, from beneath the bright lock of red hair over one eye, the rest brilliantly white. “Missed me,” she laughed, and rolled to her feet, ready for more.
