“Greetings, King Dedede,” Meta Knight bowed politely. “I heard you were looking for me?”

“You bet I was! I been hearing a few things ‘bout your little ‘exploits’ or whatever, and I figured ‘Hey! I’m a king now! I’m gonna need a knight!’ So I figured your the best option I got.”

It was so blunt. So childish. So… ridiculous. Meta groaned internally. “So… you wish to acquire my services?”

“You damn right I do! ‘N you aren’t allowed t’say no by the way! Ain’t like you got anythin’ better to do round these parts. I bet you’re bored outta your MIND.” 

Yes… watching his entire family get gored in front of his eyes because he was too weak to fight back was incredibly boring. Getting half his face nearly torn off was incredibly boring. Meta sucked in a breath. He didn’t know. He couldn’t know. It was kept a secret, and he just barely managed to fend off Nightmare. So no one SHOULD know. It meant he was doing his job.

“But it was! I mean, even if you were just looking to keep my face hidden, you didn’t have to join me. You could have let me suffer in that corruption alone, but you chose to join me… Even if it meant nothing to you, you have no idea what it means to me.”

For a split second, an acrid tang of bitterness pooled onto the king’s tongue. His face washed with a sickening glare. It meant nothing to me? No, you’re the one who ain’t know what it meant… But he quickly pushed that feeling away. It wasn’t Meta Knight’s fault that he didn’t know how Dedede was feeling. In fact, it was a good thing. It meant he was doing his job properly. So he couldn’t get mad at him. 

Even so, a stupid, selfish part of him wanted to spill his guts tell him everything. He wanted to tear his own skin open and let someone, ANYONE know what was whirling around in his skull. He wanted to be known, he wanted someone to see him, to SAVE HIM.

But he didn’t need saving. He didn’t need help. And even if he did, there were other people that needed it more, and needed it from him. He couldn’t afford to give in like that. He couldn’t be selfish anymore.
