Tom Hanniger & Harry Warden Headcanons
Warnings: DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), Canon-Typical Violence, Spoilers For My Bloody Valentine (2009)
Word Count: 611
Keep in mind that these are strictly my own personal headcanons that reflect how I interpret both Harry and Tom from My Bloody Valentine (2009) and what just seems to make sense to me in terms of personality and motivations. And, before anyone yells at me, I am well aware that this is in no way a realistic interpretation of DID, but I had to bullshit my way through canon, so withhold any judgement or criticism please because this is purely fictional.
Tom Hanniger
Tom developed DID after the whole incident in the mines where Harry tried to kill him, though he only has one alter. Obviously that alter is Harry Warden.
Tom is the primary host and the memory/trauma holder.
I feel like Tom was subconsciously aware of his alter, but purposefully ignored Harry until he couldn't anymore.
His DID could've been the reason that Tom was in a psych ward for 7 years in the first place. But since the condition wasn't all that well known in the year that the movie is set in, Harry simply could've gotten good at acting like Tom when he fronted (which we actually see in canon during the final showdown in the mines) and so Tom was eventually released from the hospital's care.
Harry Warden
Harry was created the night that the real Harry tried to kill Tom.
And, because it's implied in the movie that Harry and Tom had interacted before the collapse, Tom would have been able to create an introject alter, which is an alter that is based off of or inspired by a real person.
Harry is the secondary host and a misguided protector.
With that said, I feel that Harry is strictly a physical protector (which is an alter that may engage in aggressive behavior to protect or prevent from physical abuse. They also may personally endure physical abuse).
I think labelling Harry a protector is accurate mainly due to the car accident scene where Sarah Palmer crashed Tom's car and then Harry immediately went after Sarah in her husband's dad's rundown house.
Sure, Harry could have been co-fronting in the car and, therefore, influencing Tom's behavior because Tom was acting strange, but I firmly believe that it was Tom in that car with Sarah.
Plus, in the bar scene where some entitled old fucks get into it with Tom, Harry doesn't front because the fight was strictly verbal save for a few seconds, but the fight was stopped before it could even really get started.
Harry still killed the guys later, which leads me to believe that Harry is always aware and co-fronting to an extent. Maybe Harry was even purposely blocking memories of when he fronted because Tom doesn't remember anything until the showdown in the mines, where he sees Harry in the miner outfit and Harry fronts.
On that note, there is one moment during the showdown that's a bit confusing, because I can't tell who is fronting when Sarah is pointing a gun at Tom and Axel. Although I personally think that Tom is fronting but Harry is so close to the surface because there is a gun on them and he's a protector, which is why Tom could've slipped up and mentioned the writing on the wall from the scene of Megan's murder even though it was Harry's memory and not his.
Even with Harry being a protector, he's obviously a misguided one because his method of getting rid of the perceived threat to the body is to kill said perceived threat.
Along that same vein, I had noticed that Harry was targeting people who had been involved in both Harry Warden's death as well as those who had left Tom to die in the mine when the real Harry went after him. Of course there were some randos killed too because its a slasher film, but I think that was just a matter of wrong place, wrong time.
Plus Harry was kinda a serial killer -or even technically a mass killer because of what he did after he woke from his coma- in life, and it makes sense that his homicidal and violent tendencies would be reflected by the alter.
