Been thinking about the job swap au and wondering just how knowledgeable Alfyn is. Therion as a thief is a master of disguise and has a keen eye for item quality and value. All traits that apothecary Alfyn lacks. Does thief Alfyn have a better sense of value and stealth or- I guess I'm wondering a bit where his strengths are. Sorry if this is poorly worded.

I love himbo thief Alfyn.

Oh Thief!Alfyn is absolutely a himbo, but he's much like his canon counterpart in that he's an expert in his field and uh, not much else. He knows what's valuable, he knows the most likely places for stashes and hiding spots, he knows how to crack safes and sneak around undetected. Alfyn, in his thief training, also had the benefit of actual teachers in the Red Hoods. Life came at him fast, but he also found himself people who took him in and taught him what to look for. So he probably has more technical knowledge than Therion, but to say that he's at canon Therion's level of sheer mastery...eh, it's a bit apples and oranges, because they go about things so different.

His acting probably doesn't hold a candle to Therion's. It's nowhere near as bad as, say, Olberic's, but it's questionable enough that he'll avoid disguise work unless there's no other way in. As you implied, he he absolutely prefers to operate with stealth rather than deception, and that sorta wraps around to how he is as a person. He's got more of a Solid Snake kinda MO going on - get in unnoticed, sneak your way through, only resort to violence if there's no other way past.

Despite being a thief, he's a very honest person. He doesn't like lying, he wears his heart on his sleeve (or uh. lack thereof), and his issues with deception accidentally highlights that, in a way. Most of his falsehoods are lies of omission, and even that doesn't feel good to him. He's a straightforward guy, a hero to the people, and there's no reason to hide it, in his opinion.

This is a little rambly. My point is that he's more reliant on stealth than Therion, probably just as knowledgable, and still has a very strong moral code. All things imparted on him by the Red Hoods, and how he keeps them alive.

Not a single thought passed through Therion’s head as he took a running start and sprung over Miguel, arms outstretched, tackling Alfyn to the ground hard enough to slide all 200-some pounds of apothecary a full body length away from where he stood. He felt an ethereal spear brush past his leg, a few more past his feet, a couple past his arms. Landing on solid earth felt like a jolt back to reality, his senses pulling back from a plane above and into his body – he laid on Alfyn in an awkward straddle, his face mashed into his (pleasantly soft) chest. No time to think about that. He pushed himself up to survey the damage. Alfyn was uninjured but flustered (no time to think about that, no time to think about that), and Therion himself was fine, though there was a new hole in his pant leg. Nothing that couldn’t be fixed later. He looked behind him to see a densely packed meter of meadowgrass torn apart by a forest of ethereal spears.

“...damn.” Alfyn managed to breathe.

“Yeah.” Therion sighed. “No kidding.” He turned back to the apothecary. “You alright?”

“Um.” Alfyn shifted uncomfortably, eyes flicking between Therion and something off to the side, as if he couldn’t decide whether or not to maintain eye contact. “I’m okay, I think. Are you – ?”

“Why are you asking me? You’re the one who almost got hit with a bunch of spears, idiot.”

Alfyn opened his mouth to speak, but came up short for words. This time he maintained eye contact, and Therion suddenly realized just how close they were. He felt Alfyn’s gentle exhale on his face, a warm breeze playing with the strands of his bangs. The gold-flecked hazel of his eyes thinned by dilated pupils, the movement of his sturdy jaw as he chewed his lower lip –

(Cor, what are you, a fuckin’ twist? Get a move on, already.)

Therion’s eyes grew wide before he rolled off of Alfyn and sprung back to his feet, offering the apothecary a hand up.

“C’mon.” Therion didn’t meet his eyes. He could feel gratitude and confusion radiating off of him, but he couldn’t afford to wrestle with that. Not now. “We don’t have time for this.” Instead he looked at Miguel, struggling to his feet, caught in one of H’aanit’s hunting snares. At the very least, his teammates has his back while he and Alfyn had their little…moment.
