back at it with a drawing for @drdiabolical ‘s mini fic “The Minimum Effort Principle” (I would tag it if I remembered how too)

Guess who forgot it was the 3rd

Kakashi is a certified donut maker. 🍩 Rin. Haku. Zabuza. In the office, he’s known as the “hole puncher.”
I apologise for the dark humor but i had to. 😭 I blame Kakashi for punching holes in people.
Rin, Haku, Zabuza and a bunch of other countless donuts he handmade during the 10 years he spent in anbu 😂
Not to mention the almost donuts that he managed to stop at the last second but not without a couple of PTSD lovely moments 💀

It's not his fault that people seem to really love throwing themselves in front of his Chidori 🥲
Thinking about limited life again.
It made sense Etho went with TIES.
Etho went with TIES because he’s comfortable with the three of them. Because even though Bdubs was there when Scar asked if Etho could be their dad, Etho wasn’t comfortable enough with Scar and Cleo to even attempt…whatever they were trying to do with him at first. He had been with Tango and Skizz once before, and Impulse and him worked really close together the previous game, even if it was mainly for Etho and Bdubs benefit. It was based around being comfortable with each other.
All three of them knew Etho’s flaws. All three of them were well aware of Etho’s bias to Bdubs, and honestly, used it to their advantage. All three of them knew how to work around that, how to plot under Etho’s nose and sometimes even in front of him if it meant Etho could keep plausible deniability. They knew his strengths too, his loyalty, his mind. His mob farm was probably the biggest supplier of gunpowder that season, for everyone. The flaws and strengths didn’t matter as much as the fact that Tango, Skizz, and Impulse all wanted him on the team, and that the team never felt like it was fracturing. It wasn’t two and two like BEST was, it was four strong from the beginning. It was comfortable, because all three of them wanted Etho there. Not just Bdubs, not just Scar for a bit, SIT was prepared to do what it took for Etho to commit to their team up.
And maybe, that’s why it hurts so much that they had Etho take the final kill for Skizz.
They had built a comfortable place for Etho and now they were asking him to destroy that. Etho could go back to TIES tower and be greeted by people he KNEW were friends and allies. These guys would never betray Etho, just like he would never betray them. All three of them had the same kind of loyalty that Etho has, self-destructive in the name of character. Etho had just been hunted and hunting his own family down for time, getting knocked down time and time again and had finally come back to his home with his tail between his legs. He was panicked, more panicked than normal with his clock ticking down at the corner of his screen, he was walking into a scene half done and taking it over with a frustrated cry, which isn’t something Etho usually does.
But he did, because he felt comfortable doing so.
And then Skizz throws him the ax, Tango acts like someone shot his dog, and Impulse just stares.
And suddenly, it's not comfortable anymore.
It’s not comfortable that Impulse is one step away from dissociating. It’s not comfortable that Tango has tears trailing down his face, that both of them look almost angry that Etho picked up the ax in the first place. It’s horribly jarring, to come into a meeting expecting comfort for his failures and be greeted with a worse opportunity.
Because Skizz- the nicest guy in this match, the man who looked at Etho and said “i want him to join us”- is telling Etho to kill him. Ordering him to, actually, his final order of the game. No amount of pleading looks will get Tango and Impulse to do what Skizz wants done, Etho’s only defense is quickly shut down when they bring up just how much time Etho still had.
It’s not comfortable to see Skizz’s head roll off the edge of skynet. It’s not comfortable, the next session, when Impulse and Tango look to him for leadership. This game wasn’t meant to be comfortable, and Etho forgot about that. TIES was the most comfortable team up for him, and in the end, it created one of the most heart wrenching ends for all of them.

Someday I wanna do a portrait mod hehe

If you see this on your dashboard, reblog this, NO MATTER WHAT and all your dreams and wishes will come true.
Sometimes I think about the fact that prior to that first Minecraft Monday outside of Hypixel's skyblock/bedwars community Technoblade was basically unknown, and when he JOINED Minecraft Monday the first time he was favored to win but basically no other contestant had any idea who he was...
....except Skeppy.
Skeppy, who had also played on Hypixel. And like leaving aside the real world implications let's slide into a fictional universe where you're entering this tournament, there's gonna be a lot of fights and a lot of famous names are there and cool, you're one of them. You're Skeppy. People know you, people love you.
And then you see another name on the list and it makes your blood run absolutely ice cold.
Somehow. Some way.
Technoblade has been entered.
And everyone around you in like the big waiting room has no idea. You're the only one who knows. You hear a few people mention his name and they're like 'eh whatever' but you know what's coming. He's broken containment. He's come down from the sky and not one of these fools are ready do you warn them? Do you say anything at all? It's better if your opponents are caught off guard, sure, but there's gotta be limits! There's common decency to consider!
But time is running out and you can't decide and then he's there, just. Casually making his way to the entry arch like everyone else. No one's giving him space. No one cares.
He catches your eye.
You remember falling. For hours.
He smiles at you and doesn't say a word.
Then he's through the archway and gone and all you can say to your partner is, "Avoid Technoblade. Trust me."
Because you don't stop natural disasters. You just get the hell out of the way.

Archiving some old arts
what are the symbols and themes that can represent kakashi’s character the most?
Oh wow, I think you could write a whole book on this. Better get started right away!
Hatake Kakashi

The first and most important symbol is right there in his name I think. He's the scarecrow in the field. Kakashi's purpose is to watch and protect. His job is to look out for the little genin seedlings and protect them as they grow. He also watches over all of Konoha and has done so since he was a child, despite everything.
I remember tearing up when first reading Sakumo's wiki page, learning that the name Sakumo could be derived from the word "sakumotsu", meaning "crops". The image of tiny Kakashi standing in his family's field, helplessly watching while the crows pick his father apart?
Speaking of crows we have to mention Itachi's return to Konoha. Kakashi knows about his presence right away, watching without acting but letting himself be seen. He wants Itachi to know he's there, protecting his field and everyone in it. Itachi in turn lets Kakashi know that he can't even protect himself. The stark visual of Itachi as an endless murder of crows, calmly picking Kakashi apart. A scarecrow realizing that he can do nothing except hang there and take it. Kishimoto really made the most out of his symbolism there.

This scene shows that the scarecrow is a rather tragic figure, powerless to live up to his task. This is a theme that runs through Kakashi's entire story. A scarecrow is built to defend but if the threat gets past him he's nothing but a witness. Kakashi experiences this again and again as he struggles with his wayward students and when his precious people get killed one by one. His purpose was to protect them all and he couldn't.

Despite all of his tragedy the scarecrow is a threatening thing by design. He's a warning, standing like an eerie presence in the distance. He's the solitary shape of something almost human that silently says: "I'm dangerous, don't get close to me." We get to know Kakashi as a friend and he doesn't scare us because he's our scarecrow. The reactions of people from other villages show just how feared Kakashi was outside of Konoha though. As a young teenager he already had grown men literally screaming with fear as soon as they realized who was standing in front of them.
Kakashi as a person isn't very scary at all. He's just a guy. As a protector he's prepared to stand alone, serving the many. A scarecrow does his duty without complaint, exposed to harsh weather and passing seasons. He performs his task day in and day out, expecting nothing in return. Scarecrows are symbols of humble resilience and determination, standing tall amidst adversities no matter what, waiting for someone else to reap the benefits of the harvest. He is glad to see his kids grow and surpass him because that was his purpose all along.
In shinto there is a scarecrow kami that is worshipped as a god of wisdom. The mythology says that while the scarecrow cannot walk it still watches, learns and knows everything. This reminds me of Kakashi's way of standing still in the background, observing a situation before engaging fully in a conversation or a fight. Also the many instances where he is trapped, immobilized or stuck in a hospital bed, still managing to help his allies by fully making use of his observational skills and the knowledge he's gathered.
If all Kakashi can do is watch he will watch with enough intensity to fucking bend space and time, even at the cost of his own life, all to protect what grows in that damned field of his.

Another very interesting and relevant aspect of the scarecrow is its identity, or rather how it doesn't really have one. This brings us to the next symbol...
The Henohenomoheji
The symbol that Kakashi seems to draw everywhere is a common Japanese doodle face made up of hiragana characters. As wikipedia says: "Henohenomoheji is often used to symbolize a nondescript or generic human face, such as the faces of kakashi (scarecrows)"
Kakashi-enthusiasts know that he has lots of history, depth and personality but we know much more than the people around him do. Kakashi is a mysterious figure who very rarely reveals any information about himself. He doesn't even show his face! I love that Kakashi has taken the henohenomoheji as his logo and that it pops up on everything from the backs of his ninken to his coffee cups. He's got it pinned to the wall over his bed! It reveals that Kakashi is a doodler which is very charming but this symbol feels both cute and deeply sad to me. It almost reads as his self portrait, this nondescript, generic figure. Is that how he sees himself?

Kakashi takes on attributes from people around him. It's like he's patching up the holes they leave behind. Is this patchwork of adopted personality traits a way of making himself more than a silent, inanimate object separate from other people? A scarecrow giving himself an identity? Does this theme come around again with him being the copy-ninja? Observing other humans, mimicking their behaviors to perhaps one day turn the scarecrow into a real, living human? Those thoughts make me want to scream a little.
Lightning
I've talked about the more passive sides of Kakashi now but we can't ignore the fact that he can create and control lightning. Lightning is in his very nature and it doesn't get more active than that. The themes here aren't difficult to see. Lightning is one of the oldest symbols of power and destruction, speed, intellect, release of negative emotions and punishment. It's a power of the divine in nearly every mythology on earth and it should not be wielded lightly. When you create a weapon that lets you hold the destructive speed and power of a god's wrath in your own hand to exact punishment on others there will probably be some punishment waiting in return.

:(
Dogs!! Let's not forget the dogs.

I don't know if I need to explain all the things dogs symbolize and how they connect with Kakashi's character and story. All the extra layers to his core themes of protective loyalty and friendship, belonging to a pack and working together. Teamwork! Kakashi can lead a pack but he doesn't do it in that flawed media pop-psychology alpha male way. He really is Mr. Teamwork through and through, taking responsibility and giving instruction but never asserting his authority unless the situation truly demands it and maybe sometimes as a joke. He doesn't lead to achieve human concepts like power or dominance but to ensure the survival and well being of the entire pack.
Viewing Kakashi's character development through a "dog lens" is very interesting to me. Dogs and humans are alike psychologically in many ways and we can learn a lot about ourselves by watching how they respond to each other and to humans. Especially humans who treat them poorly or misunderstand them.
I'm thinking about tiny Kakashi yapping rudely at everyone, no matter their size or rank, just like many tiny dogs do. They are seen as annoying or ill behaved but they don't bark for no reason. They do that as a warning.
Many small dogs are aggressive barkers because they were literally bred with the sole purpose to warn against danger. To protect. It's in their very nature, by our design. Little Kakashi was trying to lecture everyone around him, barking about rules and how to complete missions. He was harsh about it but he really just tried to help everyone. His nature was always to protect his pack and he tried to do that by barking at them. He wanted them to listen and follow his lead, not because he wanted power over them but because he felt it was his responsibility to make them behave in a correct (safe) way and they kept bumbling about, making life difficult for themselves (looking at you Obito). Kakashi was trained and conditioned to follow a set of rules and saw what could happen if you failed. He was a tiny, loyal dog who tried to do his job despite being full of fear beneath that barking.

I could go on here. About how dogs react to trauma in very similar ways that humans do. How we can learn to be kinder to ourselves by seeing our own experiences and reactions through a dog lens too. How would you treat an anxious dog? With patience and kindness I hope.
Kakashi's early anbu period can easily be made even more devastating than it already is if you start thinking about how he was essentially a puppy trained to kill and then things out of his control made him kill wrong. He was just trying to protect and then he's abandoned. Whether it was meant as punishment or not he was set aside and sent away to repeat the same behaviors he's seemingly being punished for.

Then he is placed like a literal guard dog to protect what remains of his old pack, watching over them from the outside, unseen and unheard until he's dismissed, sent away from his people one last time before they die where he wasn't able to save them...

Yeah ok I think that's enough devastation for now. The point is that dogs are essential to Kakashi's character on many different levels. The many positive traits associated with dogs all apply to him but it's also noteworthy how he was often treated like a dog in truly harmful, dehumanizing ways ever since childhood.
It doesn't feel right to end on that horrible sad note so here is happily retired Kakashi telling a dog-related story with intense seriousness and a theatrical grandpa voice (because he felt like it) <3

Old dog Kakashi, relaxed and unbothered.

Minato is trying his best ok
Also in canon Obito doesn't know about Sakumo's death until Kannabi bridge so he thinks Kakashi is being coddled for no reason and that’s why he reacts like that. I was gonna add more scenes and reactions of them but I chose to focus on Kakashi and Minato.
I love the dynamic between them and poor Minato is just trying to help but there's only so much he can do with a deeply traumatized genius child soldier.
does this to you
kaz introducing himself to per haskell. Age 9.
kaz: greed bows to me. it is my servant and my lever.
haskell: what language are you speaking, little boy?
kaz: i said i'm greedy and i want your fucking gang to be my army.

birth of a monster (complete)

The bastard of the Barrel 🐦⬛

Kaz after Wylan called him out after the Oomen scene (saying that Kaz can't just throw Oomen overboard because he promised to let him go). And the Hannah scene (saying that he can't say stuff like that to her because she's a child). And the Alys scene (saying he can't threaten her because she's pregnant).
characters who dig themselves out of their graves (whether literal or metaphorical) are at the top of the list. nothing beats a character who should have died but didn't and comes back to haunt their own life and the world around them, benevolent or violent it doesn't matter, it's enthralling either way
Team Minato my beloved
I suffered doing this now it's your turn :)

what is your favourite kakashi fight?
I held on to this one as a treat for myself ^_^ <3 FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT! Kakashi vs the Zombie Duo Kakashi gets like half his outfit blasted right off his body and proceeds to be the sickest jumpy flippy floppy evasive ninja in all the lands. He blocks enormous scythes using just his tiny knife and he goes up against Kakuzu with nothing but taijutsu and that mad big dick energy he manages to convey despite looking like an adorable dandelion puff in a pyjamas <3 This fight has some of the best animation in all of Naruto and Kakashi is the star. 10/10 I'll never get tired of it.

Kakashi vs Mist Man ANBU Kakashi showing just how good he is with a sword! He's so damn cool. Just his attitude and confidence like, see that finger tapping on the hilt before he draws? And then he shows off his sick twirl skills before going all in with fucking kenjutsu backflips and and shit, cutting the guy's arm off with the craziest look I've ever seen on Kakashi's face in a fight. I think he's supposed to be in his late teens here and I love how he's just a bit more disrespectful and a bit more intense than his adult self.

Kakashi & Obito saving Rin It's a really short fight but really well animated and oh so important. I love this fight because of its significance for the story and for these boys!! The teamwork? The combination attacks?? The devastating knowledge of what is about to happen?!

Kakashi vs Obito Of course. Arguably the best fight of the entire series. I say that it is and of course it's my favorite. The sheer weight of it all. The high stakes and the history. The back and forth between the past and present. The silence. To quote Sasuke: "When two Shinobi are of a high enough level they can read each other's thoughts, through no more than a trade of blows. They don't need to say a word"

I love how much respect the animation studio gave to this fight. it's truly a work of art with the choreography, the choice of music and how the history and personality of these characters really come across without a single word being said. It's also got some sick moves and very funny moments in the middle of the seriousness. I love seeing how Obito's mood shifts several times, from emotionless void to triumphantly amused to absolutely furious. I don't have a gif of it but the hand thing?? THE HAND THING?? ALSO IN KAMUI?? THEIR SPACE???? I mean god... I could go on and on. I've gone on before. Here are some sick moves:

A compilation of Etho reacting to his 2011 1k subscriber special.
Clipped from the 1 million sub special, "Etho Plays Minecraft - Episode 283: 1 Million!" (starting at 28:40)
Feedback:
This was my first time doing captioning so please do let me know if there’s anything that can be improved! Even if it’s style-wize bc I’m bad at that stuff.
And as always, let me know if I can improve my video descriptions or transcriptions :)
Video description and transcription below cut:
Video description:
Etho's first-person POV in his 2011 Minecraft Let's Play world. It is night and Etho is on a beach as he introduces the video as well as a celebratory tree sapling placed near the water. The video is a screen recording, and 2013 Etho commentates over it, but is unseen.
———
Cut to a new clip in the same setting. It is nighttime and Etho places a torch on a path of dirt blocks, lighting the area. The dirt blocks connect to the top of the tree, now grown, with a mob trap on top (a pressure plate surrounded by 4 doors). Etho walks through the trap and down some dirt steps. He walks around the dim-lit beach as older Etho laughs at him.
———
Cut to a new clip in the same setting. It is day now and Etho is on top of the tree, trying to lead a creeper into the mob trap. He breaks the door closest to the creeper, the creeper jumps and Etho backs away. The creeper explodes, bringing Etho to three and a half hearts, and destroying the top of the tree. As older Etho reacts in amusement, young Etho looks at the tree in shock, opens his inventory, drops a dirt block, and jumps down to the beach. A zombie floats in the water, and Etho tries to attack it with his sword, but is killed by the zombie.
———
Cut to a new clip in the same setting. It is day and Etho stands on the beach looking at the tree. The leaves have been reconstructed with wool and the entire thing is on fire. Etho jumps around as he watches the wool burn away. A piece of TNT is revealed in the center of the tree, and when lit by the fire, it explodes in a flurry of white and black particles, taking a chunk of the beach with it. Etho walks over and looks down at the destruction as older Etho pauses the video in amusement.
