Are individual parasites sapient to some degree? I know that the hosts consciousness is treated as an afterthought to them, but I wonder if the hivemind can integrate parts of the host's mind/memories into itself to better do their evil parasite doings.

I wanna say not really but it depends. If yes, it's out of the parasite's control. In the first version of the script, Wagyu nicknamed his parasite "Salami" because of how it was changing the appearance of his face. The parasite didn't like that and made him hit himself.
