i know it’s been said before, but it bears repeating: a big, big part of maintaining your confidence & self esteem as a creator is fully embracing the concept of “you don’t have to be good like them. you can be good like you.”
for example, i’m not someone who’s particularly good at coming up with complex, elaborate plots or incredibly unique ideas. it’s just not how i choose to write. and it would be easy for me to look at someone with an elaborate, super unique plot & decide that because i don’t write like that, i’m not a good writer. after all, unique plots are good, and my writing lacks those, so my writing must not be good, right? well, no, actually. i just have different strengths, like taking a simple premise & digging super deep into its emotional depths. that’s what i do well & it isn’t any better or worse than people who do elaborate world building or come up with really creative and unexpected plots.
your writing is never going to be all things to all people. it just isn’t. inevitably, you’ll have to make creative choices that favor certain aspects of writing over others. there is truly no getting around that & it’s honestly a good thing, because it means you’ve developed your own style. but you’ll always encounter other creators who posses strengths that you don’t. it doesn’t mean one is better than the other or that your writing isn’t good enough.
comparing yourself like that would be like taking a piece of pizza & a cupcake & going “oh no, that cupcake is so sweet & my pizza isn’t sweet at all.” or “gosh, the garlic crust on that pizza is delicious and my cupcake doesn’t have ANY garlic.” obviously your pizza isn’t sweet. obviously your cupcake doesn’t have garlic. a food can’t have every single delicious flavor at once. the cupcake is good like a cupcake. the pizza is good like a pizza. so you don’t have to be good like them. you can be good like you.
Does anyone have recommendations for a good Red Kryptonite fic with Kara and Lena? If not, I might write one.

I have a wishlist for the rest of Supergirl season 6. I know that most of the episodes have already been shot, and the others are planned out. But if even 1/3 of these things happen, I will be content.
— An entire episode focusing on Kelly and Alex’s relationship with a heavy amount of flashbacks to fill in the gaps of their relationship. Sort of like the Andrea and Lena episode, but with some scenes between Dansen that were likely already filmed and cut. It’d be nice to have James there too.
— Nia coming into her powers to the point where she can take over for Supergirl by the show’s end. For Kara it’d be great for her superheroics to go down to more of a part time job.
— A character or two supporting Kelly Olsen for once.
— J’onn J’onzz getting hobbies and having fun outside of missions.
— J’onn acknowledging that M’gann was the one to resist the white martians well before he came into her life (I’m still salty about him getting the credit for that.) Maybe it doesn’t matter with the new multiverse. So either way M’gann getting something again in her life aside from J’onn like a career, reconnecting with old alien friends from the bar etc.
— Everyone getting therapy. And from someone other than Kelly. At the very least Kara, Alex, and Lena.
— Alex and Kelly having the child Alex always wanted by the last episode.
— Lena and Kara rebuilding their friendship and then...
— For Lena and Kara to realize they’re in love with each other and to be together. It doesn’t need to be a drawn out deal — the building blocks have been there. Just them together, okay? Okay.
— For Lex to become an insignificant villain who Lena takes down in a simple way, mid-episode with the focus being on her healing. Because he’s become that inconsequential by the end. No more grand, self-indulgent villain speeches from Lex.
— A cameo from Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant. Maybe over the phone.
— For Lena to apologize to Eve eventhough Eve won’t understand it.
— One more mini-crossover for Kara and Barry Allen.
— While in therapy, for Kara to start processing some of her trauma especially with the death of her planet, having had to suppress who she is, abandonment stuff with her parents, and her two stints in the Phantom Zone.
— For Kara to live. No Oliver Queen-ing her.
— At least two heartfelt, gut wrenching Alex and Kara sister moments.
— More Brainy bonding with everyone, but especially Nia and Lena.
— Eliza Danvers being there when Kara returns.
— To hear about James’ new startup thriving.
— One more Sam appearance.
— For Kara to emotionally reconcile the two parts of herself as her. No more cognitive dissonance as a coping mechanism by the show’s end. And for Kara to have screen time outside of the Supergirl uniform. I don’t care if it’s through Catco, or now that all of her friends know her identity having more game nights where she flies around, but something.

Describe the perfect date
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about William on Supergirl from fellow Supercorp shippers, so I wanna talk a bit about Kara and Lena’s love interests and how they are viewed, and also about racism in the show and fandom. This has probably been done to death but I’m new to the fandom — I binge watched the show over the winter and just started using Tumblr in a real way about a month ago. So anyway, back to the men:
There’s the major three: James, Mon-El, and William. Jack is cool too — he should’ve had more than two episodes which is part of the issue I’m going to get to, but he never got to be a major player.
So let’s talk about James. Now, I liked him a lot, particularly in season 1. Of the three main love interests for Kara, he was the only one who (season 1) writers took time to establish as a character separate from her. He had hopes and a backstory (of course), and his own idealism that usually uplifted and sometimes contradicted with Kara’s. He was honest, and vulnerable, and when he made a mistake (like calling Superman against Kara’s wishes) he grew from them. Because he respected Kara, and himself. Now the chemistry between Kara and James for me felt good — it wasn’t earth shattering — but it was typical in what I’d come to expect from a heterosexual pairing. And I would argue that had the writers not done a complete 180 on Kara’s feelings for James in S2 and had let them keep growing together as characters, that the chemistry and relationship could have been really good. But they didn’t because as the writers themselves said, they’re ‘in the drama business.’ So having a healthy, supportive partner for Kara wasn’t their priority, James was sidelined, and then they never figured out what to do with his character from that moment on. Also, I do think that race played a part in the writers’ decision to change direction with their relationship, and it’s...disheartening.
Now real briefly on James with Lena: it reminded me a lot of Laurel 1 and Oliver — when they talked about each other to other people— I believed that there was love, but when they were together, I didn’t see any real spark. Even their drama wasn’t particularly interesting — so I won’t even get into it. But it’s been long enough in this post for me to get to the point of it: the fault of the deterioration of James as a character lies with the writers. They chose to sideline him, have his values constantly shift, and have his character development stagnate post S1. He could’ve had interesting stories as Guardian, could’ve worked more closely with Kara when he replaced Cat Grant, or any number of things. But his potential was squandered. And if they were so dead set on having a male love interest for Kara, he was their best option of the three.
Mon-El and Kara had chemistry. To me, it was very much sibling chemistry in nature, which is kind of funny considering that in the comics he was a pseudo brother to Superman. To be clear I’m talking about Kara and Mon-El and not Chris and Melissa who are married, because they aren’t their characters. That’s how I think he should have stayed — as an antagonistic, shallow brother type who slooowly became decent through character growth and not specifically to become Kara’s love interest. But the handful of times Mon-El did the right thing — rebelling against his parents, trying to be a hero etc. it was because he liked Kara. How boring is that? As a love interest he was subpar — and he continued to be a liar. I don’t hate him like some fans do — and I’m well aware that he was a shallow partner who owned other people on his planet, and a habitual liar. I also see that this show is fantastical in nature where I am rooting for Lena after nearly mind-enslaving the entire population just last season. And also in a universe where a primary hero — Oliver Queen, was a serial killer (as are Laurel 2, Sara Lance, and Mick Rory to name a few). So that isn’t the main reason why I don’t like Mon-El for Kara. I just feel as early Kara felt: She deserves so much better than him.
What is there even to say about William? He’s essentially the audience in character form — the chorus in an Ancient Greek play telling us how we should feel about whatever action he’s being sidelined from. If they wanted him to be endgame, he should’ve been introduced bare minimum a season earlier to give him a fair shot. He needs to be better integrated in the fold, and at this point there isn’t a lot of time to do that well.
I’m making this post though because I don’t agree with some of what I’m seeing in fandom. Yes, I too dislike Mon-El as a love interest for Kara, but I’m not going to yuck someone else’s yum. Same goes for William and James. If you see something romantic, that’s okay. If you’re a multi shipper, that’s okay too. I was into other Arrowverse shows when Karamel and Supercorp animosity was at its highest and saw some of what went on and now I see some people uniting over their mutual dislike for William. But his underdevelopment as a character is once again entirely on the writers and execs. Not Staz Nair. We shouldn’t be tearing down actors of color or characters of color out of frustration over (potentially/hopefully) queer (white) characters. We should instead be asking for them to have more well rounded stories, just as we ask for better LGBT rep — the two aren’t separate. If Supercorp doesn’t become canon it won’t be because of the subpar heterosexual romances they were given. It will be because the writers see the love story they’ve created, inadvertently or otherwise (even doubling down on it in S5) but chose to ignore it. I really hope that isn’t the case. Us fans deserve more complex, messy slowburn romances, and Supercorp could be up there with She-Ra as one of the best ever portrayed. Here’s to hoping.
honestly, i just finished rewatching season 1 of supergirl and it makes me mad how good it was and could’ve been with even the slightest amount of prep work.
The character arcs, the emotionality the focus on alex/kara, kara/cat and building a world were all there in s1. the last 3 episodes ares so raw and fast paced and it does provide hope. just imagine what seasons 2-6 could have been if they focused less on baiting and the shock effect and more on writing a story with actual intention
I think a lot of Lena fans connect to the piece of the character that just kind of bleeds out, “I want to be loved” in every scene. A bit of desperation wrapped in a cool CEO veneer that grows thinner and thinner as we get to know her.
You’re drawn to the parts of the character that ask the same things you are asking.
Am I good? Am I okay? Am I worthy of love?
So it makes sense that the idea that a person would give up their moral beliefs because of the sheer size of their romantic love — because this one person is the exception — is incredibly appealing.
After all, that’s just what Lena needs, isn’t it?
To hear, “You’re so worthy of love, so good that everything else falls away for me.”
Maybe if she hears that enough she’ll start to believe she’s loved. (Maybe if she hears it enough, you’ll start to believe you are, too.)
Thing is, that’s not who Kara is. And it’s not really what Lena needs.
For Kara, doing the right thing is the reason she breathes.
Literally! She strongly believes that she was saved and sent to Earth for a reason, and that is to help its people.
She struggles with whether or not she Gets to be happy too, but the lesson isn’t that putting her moral beliefs first is wrong, it’s that she can be a hero and have a happy life with the people she loves. She can be Kryptonian, alien, super, and a “human” sister, reporter, friend, lover.
Supergirl finds a way.
That’s what she was trying to do with Lena when she was about to launch Non Nocere and again with Metallo!Lena — save everyone, including the direct threat to the world, who she loves.
She did the same with Rhea in season 2 when she tried to get through to her one last time. She frequently puts the world at risk to save the whole of it and it drives Alex crazy.
But it’s because of her values: Kara has Hope that every last person can be saved.
That’s what she was doing when Lena told her to let her die so they don’t poison the water in season 3. Instead, Kara yelled, “Climb!”
She found a way to save everyone. Most importantly: she found a way to let Lena save herself.
Which takes us to Lena.
Lena needs unconditional love in her life, it’s true. But she also needs to recognize the difference between love being conditional and approval or priority being conditional.
Kara has demonstrated unconditional love for Lena. That doesn’t mean she’ll always approve of her actions or make her feelings or well-being the priority in every situation. Kara has strong values that come before everything, including the people she loves most in her life. She also has her own needs and makes mistakes.
Which is hard for Lena! She doesn’t understand the difference between a lack of love and disapproval because she’s never been shown what criticism is within the context of a healthy, loving relationship.
Which is why what Lena needs isn’t approval or to be put before everything else in someone’s life to make up for all the times that she wasn’t. What she needs is to recognize what love really is.
That it’s not always going to be letting others die to save the one you love most. It’s not grand gestures and proclamations that you’re not doing anything wrong.
Love can be big belly burger and game night and a furrowed brow of concern when you’re making a bad decision. Love is asking you stand by her side and save the world. Love is trusting that you’ll make the right choices when it matters, including choosing the world over your love for her.
Because you’re a team. Because you’re friends. Because she loves you.
What Lena needs is a love and a team that is so strong, secure, and supportive that it grows into something that makes the whole world a brighter place.
That is the power of a Super and a Luthor. Not fighting against the world, each other, or themselves, but embracing all of it and having the hope and resilience to preserve it.
The Supergirl writers room:
“Ladies, is it gay to be willing to let the whole world burn just to save one person?”
*everyone ponders a second*
“Well, Kara is Lena’s BEST FRIEND, let’s not forget that, that’s what you would do for your BEST FRIEND right? That’s what BEST FRIEND’S would do for each other. Aren’t they just the bestest of friends guys?”
*everyone nods in agreement, looking immensely pleased with themselves*
"Kara would always choose saving others. That's just who she is."
Oh, but Alex, honey, deep down you know it's not true. At least not when it comes to Lena and the world. Because not so long ago you were witnessing exact same situation with your useless gay disaster sister, who refused to save the world, even when her beloved best friend was trying to brainwash it. Not when it comes with the price of Lena's safety.
Now it's another gay disaster, who refuses to think about the safety of the world, when her beloved best friend is not safely in her arms right this instant.
I refuse to believe that Alex is not groaning internally: "Again?! Right in front of my salad? Why I always have to witness their pining after each other first hand, jesus?!"
It just hit me…
Lena was watching the crystal message and acted like she could FEEL Kara. She openly noted how it felt so real (as if Kara was there even though she wasn’t)…
And then Alex tells her that the crystal contains Kara’s life force.
Lena COULD FEEL KARA’S LIFE FORCE.
That’s some soulmate shit.

is it just me or did lex seem kinda upset that lena left luthor corp? i feel like he wanted her for some reason. he didn't seem even a tiny bit happy when lena said she doesn't want to a part of luthor corp anymore. i know it's sgcw, and making theories is kinda redundant, but it just seemed to like lex was upset.
Oh totally. Lex was indeed upset about Lena just walking away from him and refusing to engage anymore. Lena Sisyphus Luthor (tm @the-ominous-owl) decided to just leave the boulder behind.
They’ve lived most of their lives orbiting each other and he was driven by the need to punish her for killing him - saving her first, but basically so he could keep manipulating and using her.
Suddenly she just disappears from his life? After all these years? How dare she!
He’s a violent sociopath with genocidal tendencies so the emotion underlying it is up for debate. Where is he going? How will his rage at being cut off by Lena manifest itself next ... ?
I find it interesting and very telling that Lena told Brainy it’s okay to have rage specifically and that you just have to let it out and let it go but says nothing about grief and despair that lies beneath the rage. And a moment later she’s tearing up, overcome with emotion when she admits she misses Kara too.
To me, this really solidifies that Lena is still heavily suppressing her emotions, particularly her sadness, when it comes to Kara. Because despite telling Brainy that boxes don’t work and he has to let it out, this is the first and only time we see Lena even acknowledge Kara’s absence and she can barely say two words let alone utter her name. That’s because the thought of Kara, especially the thought of Kara being gone, potentially for good, is too much for Lena to entertain for a second let alone bear day in and day out until Kara returns, if she ever does. It’s all too overwhelming for Lena to handle especially when the person she would seek comfort and strength from is the person she’s missing. Lena knows thinking about Kara for more than a moment would cause her to completely collapse emotionally and that’s not something she can afford to do right now. She’s already seen what losing Kara figuratively did to her and she cannot fathom what losing Kara forever could do to her, so she’s pushing her grief and sadness and anguish down because she can’t let it out and she refuses to let it go because letting it go means letting Kara go and she refuses to let Kara go.
i need you all to look at this as closely as i did so you can spot lena’s tear falling down after brainy says i miss her
I expect Alex to navigate and update Kara with the goings-on on Earth while she was stuck in the PZ
