“Hey,” a familiar voice greeted from the doorway of your classroom as you stood on a step-ladder replacing your spring themed white-board borders with new, summer themed ones. Turning your head, you offered your coworker and fellow fifth grade teacher, John, a friendly smile and wave. “Need help?”

“No, I’m good, but thank you,” you smiled again. “All done with your room?”

“Yeah, now I’m just wandering around trying to make myself useful,” he smirked. “Thought I’d see if you needed company first since I hate everybody else.”

You chuckled, though it was a bit forced.

While you appreciated John’s friendliness, he had a tendency to flirt, and even worse, he seemed to be oblivious to your discomfort. Even before you started seeing Joel, you had no interest in the man. It wasn’t that he was unattractive, by any standard he was more handsome than the average guy with his golden curls and sharp jawline resembling the likes of Matthew McConaughey. No, it was his personality and the fact that he was your coworker that turned you off. Where Joel was secure in himself, John had a tendency to be boastful and cocky. Where Joel was a family man, John was known around the teacher’s lounge as being a terminal bachelor. In short, John was friendly, but the root of his friendliness lay solely in him finding you attractive.

“I’m okay, but thank you,” you assured as you stepped down from your ladder. “And you really should start socializing with other people.”

“They’re not as easy on the eyes as you,” he drawled, leaning his body against the doorframe.

“John,” you rolled your eyes and huffed out a chuckle.

“Oh, that’s right. You and that dad are hookin’ up.”

You forced out a small, almost astonished laugh at his words.

“Yes, I’m seeing someone.” Your reply was short, hoping that he’d get the message and disappear.

“That’s too bad. You know, I always sort of thought we’d get together,” he stepped closer to you as you sat down at your desk. “We’d make a good looking couple, I think.”

“Listen, John, I appreciate you stopping by but—“

“Hey,” Joel’s voice surprised you as he knocked on the open door to your classroom, his eyes taking in the proximity of you and your coworker. “Am I interruptin’ anything?”

“No,” you shook your head and stood up, walking over to him to give him a hug, desperately missing him in the three days since he went on his trip with Sarah. Whispering in his ear, you asked for his help. “This guy is a creep and won’t leave me alone.”

“Mm,” Joel hummed in acknowledgment as you stepped back, his eyes locked with John’s in some sort of silent challenge for him to speak first.

“Well,” you clapped your hands together and looked to John. “I think I’m gonna call it a day.”

“Right,” he nodded, a cocky smirk on his face as he looked between you and Joel. “You got a kid to step-parent now, I get it.”

“Excuse me?” Joel narrowed his eyes at the man, but your hand resting on his chest calmed him down.

“Y’all have fun. I’ll see you Monday.” John gave you a wink as he passed the two of you, his shoulder brushing against Joel’s making his jaw tense.

Waiting a few beats before speaking again, you looked into Joel’s eyes and sighed.

“I’m sorry about him.”

“No, I’m sorry that you gotta deal with him everyday,” he placed his hands on your hips and hugged you against his front again. “I missed you.”

“I missed you,” you replied, sliding your hands up to cross around his neck. “When did you get back?”

“An hour or so ago. Dropped Sarah off at the house and then came over to see what you were up to. Didn’t know I’d find Matthew McConaughey comin’ onto you.”

“I can’t tell you how glad I was to see you,” you hugged his waist and rested your head on his chest.

“What are you doin’ tonight?” he mumbled into the top of your head as he pressed his lips there.

“Just some lesson planning and grading. Other than that, hopefully something that involves more time with you,” you replied.

“How about a sleepover?” he lowered his lips to hover over the shell of your ear, his voice a husky whisper.

“I wouldn’t mind a sleepover,” you lifted your head to smile up at him. “Sarah gonna be around?”

“Yeah,” he nodded. “That alright?”

“More than, I was hoping to check in on her.” Joel grinned from ear to ear at the concern you showed over his daughter.

“I’m sure she’d like that,” he leaned in and pressed his lips to your cheek. “Alright, I’m gonna go grocery shoppin’ and I gotta meet up with Tommy to give him his toolbelt, but you can head over to mine whenever.”

“Okay, should I knock? I don’t want to scare Sarah.”

“She’s probably asleep and hopefully locked the door this time, so just knock and she’ll let ya in.”

“Alright, don’t take too long,” you pinched his chin and Joel caught your hand in his, pressing his lips to your knuckles.

“Make you wait? Never.”

Elementary, Chapter Seven:

After heading home to pack an overnight bag and put all your necessary work stuff into your tote bag, you headed over to Joel’s place. When you arrived, Sarah was in the neighbor’s yard playing with a black and white border collie, the pair rolling around in the grass together while an older woman looked on. Stepping out of your car, you offered the woman a friendly wave and smile, earning Sarah’s attention.

“Long time no see,” Sarah greeted from the lawn, a goofy grin on her face as the dog tried to push her over. “Mercy!”

“You must be Joel’s new friend,” the woman greeted with a smile that felt more judgmental than welcoming.

“I am,” you nodded. “And you are…?”

“Mrs. Adler works,” she replied smugly. “I was just tellin’ Sarah about how important it is to walk in the light of God. Don’t you agree?”

“Uh,” you chuckled and looked at the road, hoping that if you wished hard enough, Joel would appear and save you from this interaction. “I’m not particularly religious.”

“Ah,” she lifted her chin a bit, her eyes studying you from head to toe. “And Joel doesn’t mind?”

“Not that he’s let on,” you laughed and looked to Sarah, tipping your head towards the front door of her home. “Sarah, sweetie, you want to come inside? I have to get to work grading—“

“Grading?” Mrs. Adler repeated as though you’d just confessed to working for the mob. “You’re teachin’ our youth and you’re not ‘particularly religious’?”

“Yep,” you nodded and thanked the God this woman believed in that Sarah caught on to your discomfort and began to head inside. “Well, it was nice meeting you, Mrs. Adler.”

“Mmhm,” she hummed, still eyeing you as you walked inside the house.

“Jesus,” you sighed as the door clicked shut.

“Yeah, they’re—what’s that word on our last vocab test? Overzealous?”

“Yes,” you laughed. “The definition of.”

“I only go over there for Mercy, and because my dad uses me as a scapegoat so he doesn’t have to talk to them himself.”

“I wish I could fault him.” Shrugging your bag off on the coffee table, you sat down on the sofa and began to unpack the hefty stack of homework you desperately needed to get into the grade book before school resumed on Monday.

“What do you want to watch?” Sarah asked as she plopped down beside you, kicking her feet up onto the coffee table just like her father liked to.

“Your pick,” you turned to her with a smile. “As long as it doesn’t end up sucking me in.”

“No promises,” she smiled back.

After two episodes of Lizzie McGuire, you realized you’d stopped grading altogether in favor of watching these middle schoolers and their first-world problems. Shaking your head to refocus yourself, you turned back to the stack of papers in front of you, but the sound of Joel’s key turning the lock on the front door pulled your attention away once more.

“Look at you two,” he chuckled as he stepped into the house, setting his keys down in the bowl by the door. “Sarah, you mind helpin’ with groceries?”

“Long as you bought the ice-cream I asked for.” Sarah stood up and walked outside while Joel came over to press a soft peck to your lips.

“I’ll be right back,” he promised in a husky voice that had you nearly whining when he pulled away.

You took the chance to get at least a few more papers graded, hoping that somehow you could convince Joel to help out later on after dinner. Joel and Sarah filed in and out of the house carrying bags full of groceries, mostly frozen food and snacks—the mark of a single dad who’d never learned how to properly cook.

“Look at you go,” Joel huffed out as he plopped down beside you on the couch, winded from bringing in the groceries. Sarah stood in the kitchen sorting them out and putting them away, giving Joel the opportunity to plant another more heated kiss on your neck, mumbling against your skin. “You get much done?”

“No,” you chuckled, turning to face him. He was so close that your nose nearly bumped against his, but he didn’t flinch. His eyes flickered to your lips once before he cracked a grin. “Judging by that look, I don’t think I’m gonna get much done later on, either.”

“I promise not to distract you.” His grin told a different story.

“Yeah, right,” you scoffed playfully, turning back to your work. “I should make you help.”

“As if I’d know the right answers,” he grunted and stood up, pressing his lips to the top of your head before walking off into the kitchen. “Should we do take out tonight?”

“When’s the last time you two had a home cooked meal?” you called back while grading, exercising your skill of multitasking.

“When I go to Grandma’s,” Sarah replied as she walked into the living room and resumed her spot on the other end of the couch, a half-eaten Pop-Hart in hand. “But here? Uncle Tommy cooks sometimes.”

When Joel entered the room, he was holding the other half of the Pop-Tart.

“You judgin’ me for my lack of cooking skills?” he teased, leaning in the archway. You said nothing, simply raising your eyebrow at him and cracking a smirk. “I can cook.” You and Sarah shared a look of skepticism. “I can cook.”

“What, cereal?” Sarah quipped, earning a laugh from you. “You burn water, dad.”

“I do not,” he defended, appalled by the lack of faith in him. “You know what? I’ll show y’all. I’m cookin’ tonight.”

Sarah stood up and walked over to the dining chair, pulling it to the center of the room so that she could stand on it.

“What the hell are you doin’?” Joel asked.

“Testing the smoke detectors. I think we’ll be needing them tonight.”

Elementary, Chapter Seven:

“Baby,” you sighed out a sympathetic laugh as you watched Joel defeatedly stare at the burnt chicken breasts he’d attempted to roast. Coming up behind him as he stood in front of the stove, you rubbed circles on his back, your nostrils itching from the smell of char. “It’s…not too bad.”

He turned to give you a flat scowl. “I turned chicken to charcoal, baby. It is that bad.”

“Dad, I know there’s been a little bit of a delay in the food department but,” Sarah walked over and held her stomach. “I’m starving.”

“Yeah, I’m sorry, baby girl,” Joel sighed and carried the tray of burnt chicken over to the trash can, dumping it inside. “You know what? Go put your shoes on. We’re goin’ to McDonald’s.”

“Sweet!” Sarah beamed and ran off to go get ready.

“I’m sorry,” Joel turned to you, resting his hands on the small of your back as he hugged you close. You placed your hands on his chest and shook your head, looking up at him. “Was tryin’ to show off and impress you, and look what happened. I nearly burned the damn house down.”

“You don’t have to impress me,” you assured with a smile, amused and touched by the fact that this was all for you. “I only mentioned home cooked meals because I enjoy cooking. I wasn’t trying to challenge you or anything, I was just trying to offer to cook for you two without overstepping.”

“Baby,” he cooed, giving you a loving frown. “You are more than welcome to do whatever the hell you wanna do here. It would be nice to have a good home cooked meal every now and again, but I don’t want you doin’ all the work. I wanna help and learn so that one day, I can surprise you with a romantic, unburnt dinner.”

“Okay,” you smirked and nodded. “Although, for you I would’ve choked down that burnt chicken with a smile.”

“Oh yeah?” He raised an eyebrow.

“Mmhm.” You leaned in to give him a soft kiss. “You may not have skills in the kitchen just yet, but everywhere else…”

“I don’t know, I seemed to do a good job in your kitchen. Remember that?” You blushed and bit your lip.

“How could I forget?”

“Okay, you two,” Sarah called out from the doorway. “McDonald’s, remember?”

Joel chuckled and led you out of the house.

“How could I forget?”

Elementary, Chapter Seven:

“I wish I could have an endless supply of chicken nuggets,” Sarah sighed contentedly as she slugged inside the house behind you and Joel. “And Mcflurries.”

“Alright, Ronald McDonald Jr., go pick out a movie while I change,” Joel ordered as he started to walk upstairs, but was stopped by Sarah’s voice.

“Actually, I think I’m gonna tuck in early tonight. Jessie and her parents invited me to join them at the water park tomorrow.” Joel turned to Sarah with a chuckle and placed his hands on his hips.

“Were you gonna run that by me first or just go as you pleased?” Joel asked.

“Can I please go tomorrow?” She gave him a pair of puppy dog eyes that would melt even the coldest heart.

“I suppose,” he smiled and pulled her in for a hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her curls. “Just ask first next time.”

“Okay,” she nodded and hurried off upstairs with a burst of energy.

“That girl,” Joel shook his head at you as you cozied up on the sofa with a throw blanket. He smiled at you from the stairwell and leaned against the wall. “Well don’t you look cozy over there?”

“Would be cozier if I had you here with me,” you purred.

“Sarah’s gonna be asleep soon,” he lifted an eyebrow at you. “You know what that means.”

“That I can get some help with this stack of homework I still have to grade?”

“How about this,” he sauntered towards you and bent down to hover his lips over yours. “For every paper I help grade, you gotta take somethin’ off for me. Sound like a deal?”

“And how do I get you naked?” you asked with a smirk, pressing a soft, barely there kiss onto his lips.

“Oh, that won’t be an issue,” he grinned and kissed you deeper. “Take all this upstairs and I’ll grab us some wine.”

“Yes, sir.” You gave him a salute before tucking your folder of work under your arm and jogging up the stairs with an excited grin on your face.

Making yourself comfortable, but not too comfortable, on Joel’s bed, you halved your stack of papers and placed one on his side of the bed while you got to work on your own stack. A few minutes passed by and you heard Sarah’s door click open, a mumbled “goodnight, baby girl”, and then her door shut. But instead of walking right in like you expected, there was another brief wait with a bit of shuffling. After a few seconds, the door clicked open and Joel stepped in wearing nothing but a smile, his large hand holding the stems of two empty wine glasses and the neck of a red wine bottle. Your jaw hit the bed as you gawked at him, both amused and confused by his state until you remembered what he’d said on the couch.

Oh, that won’t be an issue.

“Joel Miller,” you teasingly scolded as he walked over to your side of the bed and set the glasses down before pouring two hefty cups.

“What? Do I have somethin’ on my face?” he smirked, lifting your glass to hand it to you.

“Pride,” you retorted with a breathy chuckle as you took a sip. “How am I supposed to stay focused now?”

“Hm, I don’t know. I suppose you’ll have to figure that out yourself, baby.” He leaned down to press his lips against yours, tantalizing and lingering, your lips moving to follow his as he slowly pulled away. Joel chuckled at the effects of the spell he’d already managed to cast on you with as little as his naked body and a sip of wine. “Come on,” he tapped the small stack of papers you had left. “Time to work.”

“I hate—“

Joel gave you a warning look, his brow lifted and a half-smile on.

“Fine. I don’t hate you. But you’re a cruel, cruel man, Joel Miller.”

“Nothin’ cruel goin’ on. I’m gonna give you what you’re wantin’…as soon as you finish your work.”

Though you were working faster than you ever had, turning out pages every fifteen or so seconds, Joel seemed to be in a race of his own.

“Done,” he’d announce proudly, and you’d take something off. You started with your socks, then came your wrap-dress, then your bra, and finally, your red lace panties hit the floor by the bed. At that point, Joel had finished and you only had one paper left, but it seemed that one would have to wait until morning.

With your glasses finished and the warm buzz of intoxication flowing through your nerves, you threw your leg over his lap and straddled him.

“God, I want you so bad,” you purred in between sloppy kisses to his lips, your hands cradling both sides of his face. Joel groaned into your mouth at the admission and gave your hips a squeeze, tugging your now soaked center to rest along the underside of his throbbing length.

“Grind on it, baby, I want you to soak me,” he ordered in a husk, his hands guiding your hips as you rocked back and forth along his length, your head tossing back and an animalistic sigh of relief slipping from your lips. Joel reached up and covered your mouth, bringing your eyes to his as he shook his head. “Uh uh, gotta be quiet for me. Can you do that?”

“I can certainly try,” you smiled into a kiss, Joel’s smile against your lips warming you while his cock stirred you. You gasped into his mouth as his cock slipped and entered you by accident, Joel groaning at the unexpected heat of your walls around him.

“Fuck,” he buried his face in your neck and eased you down his length until you were flush against his base, the two of you staying still like that for a moment. He lifted his head and looked into your eyes, his own lidded and glossy from pleasure and the wine. His thumb stroked across your cheek as he gave you a reverential study. “You are everythin’ I ever wanted, do you know that?”

You shook your head and let out a soft sigh.

“Well, you do now,” he smiled. “I’m never lettin’ you go.”

“Please don’t,” you moaned softly and crashed your lips against his, your hips rocking against him to grind him deeper. Joel let out a choked whimper and leaned back against the pillows, pulling you down to his chest with him. One hand cradled your cheek while the other held the small of your back, guiding your hips as they rocked slow and deep.

“So good,” he mumbled against the skin of your jaw as he left a love bite there. “So fuckin’ good for me.”

“I want you to fuck me,” you moaned into his ear.

Joel flipped you over and pressed your thighs up to your chest, spreading you open for him as he sat back on his ankles. You hugged your thighs, allowing him the chance to use his hands in other ways. He licked the pad of his thumb and brought it down to your clit, running circles over it while his cock rocked deep, in and out, in and out, stroking against that spot inside you that made you go blind with pleasure.

“Jesus, baby, you should see how fuckin’ good you look wrapped around me like this.” He was moaning now, maybe too much, the beds squeaking doing little to hide the activities at hand. “God, you’re fuckin’ squeezin’ me so tight, baby. It’s so fuckin’ good. So wet, so pretty.”

“Joel,” you moaned in a whisper, your eyes screwed shut and face scrunched as your orgasm threatened to come at any second. “Baby, I want you to cum with me. Cum inside me, I need to f-feel it, fuck.”

“I’m cummin’, baby, I’m cummin’,” he whimpered and groaned, fucking you through his orgasm until yours hit only a thrust or two later. Joel undid the grip you had on your thighs and laid over your body, slipping his arms underneath the arch in your back to hug you tight to his heated and sweaty form. “God damn.”

“I know,” you giggled and panted. “We should have tipsy sex more often.”

“I wasn’t tipsy,” he confessed. “That was just how good you make me feel, baby.”

“Mm,” you tilted his lips to slant against yours. “That sounds like a challenge to me.”
