Took me forever to finally read red white and royal blue... so how I’ll have a total fixation on it and will be annoying about it

Know what moment I found sad? When Rahim asks Victor’s type and he says Benji. And then admits that he really doesn’t know. Victor really doesn’t even know what he likes or what he wants because he got with the first dude he crushed on. He idealized Benji and their relationship and has tried hard to make it work even when it hasn’t been. But in doing so, he has ignored his own needs and personal growth. And it isn’t until he is sitting in a bar with Rahim faced with that question that he realizes it.

Being queer isn’t a one time deal. You don’t go through a rainbow waterfall and then that’s it, you’re done. There is so much learning and growing into different facets of your identity entirely outside of a relationship. And for Victor…his gay identity was wrapped up in Benji. But during s2 we see that start to change. We see him exploring dynamics with his mom and family. We see him trying to balance being a jock with being gay when his teammates are treating him differently. Wondering if he’s gay enough. And what it means to be gay enough. Exploring friendship (and maybe a relationship) with a guy whose own personality and queerness is presented very differently from Victor’s. Learning that there’s not one right way to be gay. 

And the more Victor has started exploring what his identity means to him, not just as a gay man but as a gay man of color, his relationship with Benji has started to suffer.

Victor has started properly exploring himself as a gay man in s2 I think, but has so much more self-discovery to go through. And he needs to be allowed his sexuality to be about him, not Benji or any other relationship he might have. His queerness exists outside of the confines of his relationship and he should be able to explore and grow from it.
