its been 20 minutes.

this is gonna be a hella controversial post but i have to say it

i've been in a lot of lgbtq ship fandoms, and in all the wlw ships, the majority of shippers were other sapphic women like me, with the very rare gay/bi man. but the big mlm ship fandoms always consisted of mostly straight women. even if there were other lgbtq people in the fandom, we were always drowned out by the straight majority of mlm shippers.

except for byler.

byler is the first m/m fandom i've been in that truly feels like a gay ship for gay people. this fandom is full of people who relate to will and mike's story because it's something we've experienced ourselves. i see so much of myself in will's character and his happiness means the world to me because i've been him and i want his story to have a better ending than mine did.

it's not us liking the ship bc they're two white guys, it's because they've got a beautifully constructed story that is so instantly relatable and heart wrenching. will and mike are so easy to root for because so much of their arc - both the highest highs and lowest lows - is representative of the Queer Experience™️ that we've all been through and we all want to see them work it out because it'll heal the hurt in our hearts and give people hope that things do get better. that's what byler represents to us - hope.

TL;DR - the majority of byler shippers aren't fetishizing will and mike, we are will or mike. and i think that's pretty special.

Obviously I am a bowlcut defender. I will defend it how it looks now until my last breath...BUT I am also a "Will needs a shaggier bowlcut" supremacist.
