Iron Lung (2022)

Iron Lung is a short dread-driven submarine horror game by David Szymanski, the developer of DUSK, The Moon Sliver, and Squirrel Stapler.  Set entirely within a claustrophobic one-man submarine nicknamed the “Iron Lung,” you must blindly navigate an ocean of blood to take photographs of key locations, and hope whatever lives below doesn’t find you. There is only a single porthole on the sub, and it needs to be closed due to depth pressure, so you have to navigate purely via an incomplete map, proximity sensors, sound, and a primitive external camera which can be used to take the pictures you need to complete your mission, or to get a grainy low resolution visual of what’s happening outside.

Games like Iron Lung?

I couldn’t get enough of Iron Lung, so I searched for games with a similar horror vibe. I was sick at the time and thus have no recollection of how I found myself neck deep in what could be qualified as a “minimalist spaceship simulator where you are alone and scared”.

I am not a reviewer therefore I’ll be sharing my thoughts in a brutally honest fashion and hope to convince you to give the games a try. And let me know if you do, because I would honestly love to hear about your experience.

Scavenger SV-4

Pilot a rover on an alien planet with grainy visuals as your only guide. Sounds familiar? You also get to walk around a spaceship with retro graphics where you can analyze whatever the rover has picked up, measure your radiation levels, and maybe blow out an alien through an airlock. Also, there are weird artefacts that teleport you? Shut up and take my money.

Duskers

Operate drones on abandoned ships by typing in commands. This game is so immersive that people will turn off the heat to simulate the feeling of being alone in space. Now if that’s not a seal of quality, I don’t know what is.

Capsule

Are you in space? The ocean depths? Who the fuck knows. Get moving before you asphyxiate. Something terrible has happened here, and I don’t know what. Maybe the notes will tell us. Or not.

I can’t believe it took me so long to figure out that “The Quarry” is a double entendre. It’s both a mining area, like where the game is located, and referencing the main cast since “quarry” also means prey.
