One of my most tinfoil hat takes that I truly genuinely believe is that George wrote asoiaf in a way that would give him room to go in many directions because he isn’t sure exactly how he’ll resolve a bunch of different plot threads. So he built the groundwork for multiple paths but in a way where choosing one won’t make it seem like some other thread was abandoned.

Like for just about every prophecy, there are many possible interpretations. I don’t think this is George trying to create red herrings but instead giving himself options. Is the mummer’s dragon Young Griff or is it Jon? Who is the younger more beautiful queen? Was Alys Karstark really the girl in grey or could it yet be Jeyne or Sansa?

We can argue about these until we’re blue in the face (and there is a LOT of arguing) but I don’t think anyone is misinterpreting here. I think the same can be said about things that seem like foreshadowing. There are a lot of these charged scenes with potent imagery that seem to suggest something, but they all could be nothing too. You can’t determine whether or not something is foreshadowing and what is being foreshadowed until that thing comes to pass. I think people have picked up on these different potential threads George has written and that’s why we have so many fan theories and analyses that contradict each other despite all being logically consistent and using evidence from the text.

Because we know there are examples of George having written the groundwork of things in the final versions of the books that he didn’t follow through on. Prime example is Sansa and the Hound. George himself said he was playing with the idea and there was something there. The shippers picked up on this. We have no idea how many different ideas George played with and wove into the text.
