How do people find out their ability?

I mean, something like No Longer Human is pretty easy to stumble upon: someone tries to use their ability on Dazai and it gets nullified. Simple like that. Poeta Doppo? Maybe a little trickier, but also easy, especially for a child. Golden Demon? Maybe an accident in a moment of danger, but not so difficult. I Am a Cat? Maybe Natsume woke up one day being actually a cat and just rolled with it.

But abilities like the Madness of the Jewel King? Like, how the fuck did Ace come upon it? He liked to randomly collar people during his high school years? Or the virus one, the one that infects Mori and Fukuzawa. How did the guy found it out? Or again John's one, the vines. Did he like to cut himself up and stick seeds inside the wounds even /before/ knowing he has an ability? I don't think so.

Story of my life

Spending the 23th of December in the hospital is truly an experience that I didn't think I'd have when I woke up this morning, but here we are.
