Spy x Family is the most plot heavy politically relevant romcom I've ever fucking seen

he is literally one of the most dramatic characters ever and I can't with him lol

One great thing about Spy x Family is the way Endo tries to frame his own idea of what "a romance" is. I'm not sure if this is a deliberate decision, as he prefers to focus on denser and more influential themes, such as war, consequences and the search for peace in each character…. Or if simply, Endo is not so comfortable and sees the typical romantic moments as a forced construction of a relationship between two characters….

And it's in the way it draws a linea between idealized fantasy and the genuine feelings (of love) of a family. This is not only a difference you can notice within the SxF universe, but also as a viewer.

If we analyze Nightfall and Becky's perspective a bit we can clearly see that their idea of love/romance for Twilight/Loid are actually projections of their own desires on a person who fits perfectly

According to Nightfall logic, she will prove that she is perfect, to the extent of being the only woman worthy to be at Twilight's side. She has been his student and comrade on missions, so she has been by his side, has examined multiple roles, memorizing his exemplary 'fake smile'. Nightfall loves Twilight, the perfect spy, the man of a thousand faces, a professional in the art of espionage who foresees a thousand scenarios in his head long before they happen.

Then, Twilight would suddenly discover how perfect she is, having an epiphany of feelings that make him fall madly in love with her (?)

Which makes Nightfall unaware that the man she's in love with (or at least, his spy side) is totally removed from that illusion.

That is a FANTASY

The initial Twilight (her teacher) is a cold, distant man who is not interested in having a relationship because he has discarded that kind of personal happiness, much less would he do so with a WISE colleague.

Twilight is someone with many emotional conflicts, due to the barriers he has created for himself because of his own past. Nightfall wants to awaken those buried feelings while pushing the distant Twilight fr to love, and who has always told him to isolate himself from his own personal desires and feelings.

So… Nightfall's love for her master may be genuine and born out of her genuine admiration for Twilight's motivation to create a better world. But it is unsustainable when it comes to building that love into a marriage, because the Twilight that Nightfall dreams of doesn't really exist, rendering her efforts to impress him futile.

After all, this is not what Twilight is really looking for (at least, his true self).

In itself, Nightfall loves the perfection of Twilight, the perfection of the spy. Because that's what she longs for the most, a love story where she is perfect in someone's eyes perfect.

And well…. Is it necessary to talk about Becky? I think it's much more obvious how everything Becky dreams of is a much more exaggerated fantasy, a love story where she fights with her rival to get the heart of her prince charming (for starters, Twilight could literally be her dad xD).

It is here that Endo's joke about romance becomes more blatant and obvious. The perfect romance is a childish fantasy straight out of a soap opera.

We know that Becky does not love Loid. She loves the fantasy she has created around him. For her, romance is synonymous with maturity, and Becky projects herself as a more mature child than the rest of her age group. At the same time, she wishes for a love story full of drama and happiness.

In contrast, the relationship Loid (Twilight) and Yor build is perhaps the most mundane. (in a good way).

Yes, they are an assassin and a spy, who got married each other to the sound of a grenade. But at the end of the day, it's the two of them sitting comfortably in a living room, on an armchair, drinking a cup of hot tea/coffee.

Endo shows us that many times, that real and genuine love is made of those small moments of intimacy, where nothing big is happening. Just two people talking from the sincerity of their feelings, two people supporting each other, remembering that "you don't always have to be perfect", "being yourself is what matters".

It's wrong for romance to be fantasy?

No, of course not!!

It is natural that the first desire you have with a partner is to have an approximation, especially if it is physical. Like the idea of him holding your hands while he professes his desires of you (As Fiona and Becky would say, "make a move.")

The problem with idealized romance, is that it creates a sweep that prevents us from genuinely getting closer to the real person we love. There is so much focus on personal wants and desires that we are blind to the true needs of the other person.

Nightfall's biggest drawback is that she is so focused on what she wants and what she thinks Twilight needs that she is not able to see the emotional needs that her master has (although, being fair… He doesn't know either, right?). The funny thing about Becky and Nightfall's love is the huge contrast to Loid (Twilight) and Yor's real relationship. Both are constantly looking for perfection in Loid /Twilight's actions, forgotten that there is only a tired man with stomach aches from his ulcers.

The difference for Yor, is that she is not expecting greatness in Loid, or if she really dreams that he is an idea man she is looking for. He is perfect, just the way he is. Twilight and Yor may not be very intimate for many, because of the lack of physical closeness between them, and because every time something seems to happen, someone gets hurt (sometimes Yuri, sometimes Twilight)…. or because we don't see them caught up in these fantasies for each other.

But …. is it really like that?

The amazing thing about the fake marriage between Loid (Twilight) and Yor is that the kind of intimacy they have is perhaps the most difficult to achieve but the most valuable in the long run. And that is being at peace with each other, talking about those things you would never talk about with anyone else, enjoying each other's company only, speaking from the sincerity of your feelings and affirming a thousand times that you would never change anything about each other and would choose them as your partner again and again (for life).

This is the true romance within a marriage.

So… we haven't seen progress in their relationship?

Sure we have, lots of times. But these are much more subtle and simple than we expect. We know that they both cook dinner together (as a couple), and have selected the stores to buy what they need for the house (as a couple), they buy the ingredients for dinner or cleaning products the other asks for (as a couple), Yor takes her husband's clothes to the dry cleaners, Loid makes delicious food for his wife,They say goodbye at the door (as a couple).... both look at each other as if they were the most wonderful people they have ever met in their lives.

(If these two have not kissed it is because they are basically two idiots).

Every time a romance is forced between them, something bad always happens, simply because it is not the right way it should happen. Unlike when the two approach each other being authentic.

I don't think that in the future, these two will have problems with physical intimacy. We're talking about a man who took a second to REALLY ask his fake wife to marry him (I'm sure if Yor didn't kick him to the curb he would have asked her for a wild honeymoon that very night)...Or that Yor in a fit of confidence pushed her fake husband, cornered him, and climbed on top of him.

I'm serious, these two are craving for physical love, what they want to admit!!

In the end, the engine of a true couple is not in the touch of their hands but in the touch of their hearts.

Spy X Family Chapter 76

~*~ Warning: Contains spoilers for Chapter 76 of the manga! Open at your own risk, agents! ~*~

First of all, a slight break from the crushing angst was nice. After a whole bunch of stressful chapters, a little bit of fluff was in order.

It was nice to see, as I expected, that Twilight was worried, in his own quiet, overthinking way. He's not at the point yet to just absolutely break down and show his emotional side, but he shows he cares with his repeated concern for Anya's mental health as well as her physical well-being. I also noticed that during their breakfast conversation, he didn't once think "for the mission". We're making progress, people!

Also, he drives her to school! I can't imagine him letting her back on a schoolbus for quite a while after that whole ordeal.

I found it interesting that Anya has picked up that something is weird with Damian's family. Of course, she doesn't quite understand the depth of it, she's six. But she's noticed that something doesn't quite add up, and it stuck with her.

And then Twilight, the poor sap, misunderstands her pensiveness as her being mad at him for not picking her up. He has a remarkable ability to feel guilty for situations he wasn't involved in or things he would have no way to change. (Shh it's the trauma)

And there we have our first "for the mission" of this chapter 😂. Interestingly enough, it's not about her Stellas, or even her friendship with Damian. He's thinking that if she's traumatized, then the mission is in danger. And he's not wrong, but it's nice to see the "for the mission" directed at her well-being and nothing else.

And then we get the discussion between Henderson and the tutor-in-residence, which feels like the set-up for a longer plotline. Especially this gem:

Henderson continues his trend of being a Loid Forger fanboy, but to me this seems like an excellent way for Endo to start giving more and more plot-relevant clients to Loid Forger. Perhaps even Melinda or Donovan Desmond at some point? One can only hope.

And then we have this panel:

I notice that Jeeves says "residence" instead of "rooms" or something similar. It looks like Melinda lives in a completely different house most of the time, then. An interesting window into the Desmond home life, and one I didn't quite expect. I wouldn't have thought that Donovan would allow such a thing. For a man so concerned with the Desmond family name he doesn't seem to care if people think familial relations are strained.

Poor kiddo, no wonder he seems happier in the dorms. I get that Melinda has her own stuff to deal with, but after last chapter's drama and how she went on about cooking for Damian, I expected her to at least eat with him. It's another comparison drawn between the Forger family and the Desmond family: the Forgers are all present at breakfast, and openly voice their concern for Anya, while Melinda straight up leaves the building and Damian only finds out she cooked from Jeeves.

The scenes with the other kids swooning over Damian, Becky, and Anya are cute, and of course getting another Stella goes to Anya's head a little bit. "Double Starlight Anya", really? 😂

This one made me chuckle out loud. And that little smirk on her face 😂

Also some of these rich Eden kiddos really need to touch grass once in a while. "Peasants" are people just like everyone else, and it's slightly appalling how these kids think that class makes a biological difference. As they get older, that can easily turn into bigotry.

The whiplash of Anya and Damian getting along somewhat to fighting to getting along again to fighting again is such an accurate depiction of little kids' friendships. Ten minutes is long enough to start and finish two separate wars.

And then we get this cute panel at the end, which sums all of that up nicely.

In conclusion, the fluff was strong in this chapter, but it wasn't a filler chapter, per se. The fluff was plot-relevant and moved the story along, as well as making a nice change from the last several chapters.

I do have a sneaking suspicion that this reprieve from the angst will be a brief one. My hunch is that either the next chapter or the one after that will take a hard left turn back into angst territory. See ya in two weeks!

The best thing about Endo’s new illustration of Anya dressed as Eliza Doolittle is imagining Twilight spending a whole week at the WISE costumes department trying to sew his daughter the perfect outfit for her musical debut at Eden.

“Where’s the red fabric with that peanut print?”

“I need more taffeta here!! NOW!”

“I know it’s frilly, but I’m thinking, is it frilly enough?”

“One big bow is great. But what if we made it 4 big bows. 4 times as great!”

“Do we have a child-sized lacy umbrella somewhere? As girly as possible? We still have something from when Nightfall had to disguise herself as a 10 year old, right?”

“I’m running out of styrofoam for the stars and bolts for Anya’s tiara. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY”

“Oh wait, actually, can I borrow one of your hats, Handler? promise I’d give it back. This is for the mission.”

All of WISE tries to stay out of Twilight’s way and give him everything he wants - he’s deadly when he’s in this state of paternal/ sartorial focus. They don’t even want to think what he’d be like when he decides he wants to design Anya’s prom dress and graduation gown. Some are already planning to take those weeks off.

I was reading the chapter 75 of Spy x family and I’m glad that’s the plot is moving on 😌❤️

Because I was enjoying the plot but it was a little long, but now I’m in again 💫

Fake dating for the mission. / Eden AU

Anya's baby hands holding tightly onto her papa makes her the cutest little koala. All other koalas are just not koala enough.

Apart from Yor. Except we all know Twilight would be the koala here. Unclear whether he'd drool a bit like Anya did on his suit. But...

I am willing to bet all the money I don't have that Twilight has that photo of Anya - his first photo of Anya - in his wallet or framed at his WISE desk or in his locker at the hospital.

Probably his wallet. So he can keep his baby close to him at all times. For the mission.

Give me the fic where Loid gets amnesia after a head injury on a dangerous mission and when he wakes up he believes Anya and Yor are his real family without any knowledge of his job as a spy. He lives life as Loid forger, despite WISE trying to contact him and give him signs.

But he’s genuinely falling in love with them, and Yor and Anya are getting closer to him by the day. And when his memory comes back, he has a full blown identity crisis. Because he lived the life of Loid Forger, and it was better than he thought. And that was the last thing he expected.

And he continues on with the mission, but vows to do things the Loid Forger way, instead of the Agent Twilight way. In doing that, Anya’s grades begin to improve, and he and Yor grow into an actual couple. When Operation STRIX ends, he tells WISE that he will continue taking missions- but only small ones, that he can do while continuing to be Loid Forger. And WISE, not about to lose their best agent, complies.

Loid gets the life he didn’t even know he wanted, and he and Anya and Yor live happily ever after.

Imagine being Loid and have this work of art as your wife.

I would thank the universe every day for that gift.

*MANGA SPOILERS AHEAD*

One recurring ‘joke’ that’s absolutely not a joke is Anya fearing she’d be abandoned by Twilight once he finds out that Yor is an assassin. What’s interesting here is that in her head, Twilight is being Dad in these scenarios - we all know that his reaction as a Spy would like be very, very different. And in that situation, it likely won’t be his usual ‘is she trying to seduce me’ worry either, because the reveal would be serious.

But that’s the thing. The serious moments between Twilight and Yor have so far always taken place with baby is not there. Anya is there as someone who ties mama and papa together… but most of the time they are also very much talking about their marriage separate from Yor’s role as a mother and Twilight/ Loid’s role as a father.

Whatever moment of truth between the Forger couple, the first thought will most likely be betrayal by their spouse and the lies they want to be true and the ones they want to be untruths. Because this is about their marriage. Anya’s safety will come later… but by now it should be clear that’s a given and the other person would never endanger their child.

Baby is important. But so is their marriage.

PS. Anya’s constant fear that it’s Twilight who abandons the Forgers probably mean it’s more likely it’d be Yor who actually leaves when she finds out. She has a lot more trust issues and have really bared her soul to the family. There will be angst.

I feel like Loid is a great Dad but he’s also such a fucking idiot sometimes that it’s up to people like Franky and His Handler to make sure he doesn’t do dumb shit.

Like Franky has to tell him that no, you can’t Give Anya a Silenced Pistol as a bribe to get her to study more. Just get her some peanuts Like come on man how am I the single one when you’re this stupid?

His Handler is like “What do you mean you want to rent out sky writers to write love notes to your wife so her Co-workers believe your story just take her on a double date twilight, how are you our last hope?”

Keep in mind. This is all normal to Yor and Anya. He’s already proposed using grenades and rented Castles, the entire forger family is Go Big or Go Home and the entire spy world is just begging loid to PleaseGoHomeAndJustWatchAMovieYouDontHaveToHave100AgentsSetUpElaborateSchemesSoYourNeighboursDontRealiseYoureASpy.

Or a reminder that Twilight is here for a very specific reason that we should not forget.

SxF episode closed season 1 with the first meeting between Twilight and Desmond Donavan. The animation encapsulated the same tension between Twilight/Loid that we perceived in the manga and with a beautiful play of lights and shadows conveyed the character duality, addressing the fact that, we like it or not, for the agent the mission goes first and above everything else.

I have a couple of thoughts about it:

1. it's sad 

Because Anya - cute, and small, and funny, and so many times rejected by other families - says that she doesn't know if his father loves her, and sometimes she’s afraid of how he reacts when she shows him her poor school performance, but it's ok because she loves him and that's enough. And despite we know that Twilight cares about her, he still uses her as a cover, his family as a mask, their bonds as and excuse. 

And yet, he uses the poor Damian - so love deprived, so lonely, so approval-seeking - to get closer to Donovan. All for the mission, of course, all for the greater good, but still: he is taking advantage of the untamed love of children for his purposes.

One of the main themes of the series (as also shown in the current arc in the manga) is what are we able to do in order to protect our loved ones. How far does Yuri goes with his torture to protect Yor? How many people should Yor kill for the sake Yuri’s smile? For how long Loid Forger is going to use Anya? Is the Handler truly worried about the Forgers future? And, what if the Desmonds and their detached love is a way of protecting their children, keeping them far and away of the danger? What if the experiments conducted on Anya by some hidden structure of the state were meant to create a super diplomat and not a war weapon?

As nations and countries and states conduct questionable operations in the spirit of their citizens safety, parents may be as ruthless when it comes to their children wellbeing.

I believe that at some point, Twilight will abandon his all-for-the-mission attitude and will think about his relationship with Anya - but is still a long run. (My suspicion is that the horrible scientist that didn't allow Anya to draw is going to be the real bad guy, but sssh 🤫

2. There is also a lot of hope

Loid Forger doesn't understand Anya. Like, the poor guy is absolutely clueless when it comes to his daughter motives, plans and actions - who can blame him. The little girl is as adorable as random.

But he talks to Donavan and makes a wonderful hidden paralelism of parenting and politics, when he admits that he tries to accept her and set a common ground where they can meet and start listening to each other. The same low key diplomatic core embedded in Anya’s talk to Damian.

And both talks lead to a brief but meaningful word exchange between father and son, and that's enough for now.

But it also leads to un unexpected development: Damian tomato red admitting that he really wants to get on we'll with Anya. Cutest crush ever.

he puts every wholesome thing he does into the "it's for the mission category" because he can't even fathom to see himself even have a sample of happiness

spoiling your kid rotten so she can study more? for the mission. taking her out on tiny little outings and seeing her goofy smile whenever she spots something she's never seen, like dinosaur bones and fishes? dont take it the wrong way, that was just for the mission.

seeing your beautiful wife every morning and having your heart skip a beat every time? he's just so good of a spy that he can control his heart to go faster whenever he sees her, that's it. taking her out on dates and getting happy when your wife is happy? for the mission, dont think too much of it.

loving your family and in turn liking your best friend informant a little more? chill, that was just for the mission.

using government funds to make your girls happy? for the mission.
