The sound of keys rustling in the lock of your door had caused you to turn your attention away from the laptop in front of you to watch as your roommate, Caroline, push the door open and let herself in. “You’re home early,” you noted before bringing your attention back to the illuminated screen in front of you.

“I know,” Caroline closed and locked the door behind her before stepping out of her heels, “Maya’s flight lands soon and I need to pick her up.” A smile spread across Caroline’s face at the mention of her lover’s name. The two had been romantically pursuing each other going on a year now, and they were completely and utterly happy.

You really were happy your best friend was able to find such a great partner but secretly envious you couldn’t find one yourself. Hell, you were the one who introduced Caroline to Maya in the first place.

“What are you doing, missy?” Caroline asked, making her way to stand behind you; leaning against the couch to look at your screen.

“Just signed up for amazon prime,” you broke your gaze away from the screen to look up at Caroline, “need anything? It’ll be here in two days…”

Caroline smirked before pulling the MacBook from your hands. “I don’t need anything, but you certainly need…” she began typing on the keyboard, pulling the screen away from your sight when you tried to see what she was searching for.

“…this!” She turned to the laptop to face you, and what was displayed on the screen caught you by surprise.

A familiar series of pings emitted from your phone, breaking through the peaceful slumber you’d slipped into. Weekends were the only days you could sleep in and therefore you really cherished the moments were you hid underneath the warmth of your blankets and ignored the world. So, rightfully, your eyes snapped open with a disgruntled groan floating from your lips, a wave of irritation hitting your still sleeping brain. You reached out for the device, hand slapping at the bedside table in vain until your fingers wrapped themselves around the cool metal of your phone.

Seven messages from your ex awaited your gaze. Sunghoon had a tendency to call when you ignored his messages for long but you couldn’t be bothered to read through them right at this moment.

With a groan of annoyance, you tossed the phone onto the bed covers and crawled right back into the cocoon of warmth you’d formed. He really didn’t get the hint that you didn’t want to speak to him anymore, did he?

It took a total of two minutes for you to fall right back asleep which was immediately interrupted by blaring sound of your phone ringing. Without a glance at the screen, you grabbed it and hit the answer button.

“What do you want?” The statement came out harsher than you intended, but he deserved it for calling you at ungodly hours on the weekend.

“Well sorry to wake you up, princess,” Responded a familiar voice that instantly dissipated the furnace of anger that had begun to burn within in your chest.

“Jungkook?” You asked, sneaking a peek at your phone.

“The one and only.” You could hear his shit-eating grin from here.

Jeongguk threw the pillow across the darkened room, a crash sounded as all his deodorants and sunscreens came tumbling down from his dresser onto the floor, plastic pings and clatters accompanying his soft cursing. 

This was the third night in a row. 

Third night of no sleep whatsoever, no matter how many cups of camomile tea he drank before bed, or how much he danced and worked out to tire himself out, or how much asmr he listened to, nothing was working. Tonight, he had even popped a sleeping pill. He was absolutely against using these kind of drugs unless absolutely necessary, but he was desperate. Everytime he was at the edge of blissful oblivion, something would snap him back to consciousness. Whether it was house noises, or the hum of the fan, an annoying itch or a wayward thought or just… the image of your heavenly arms wrapped around him as you cradled him to sleep. 

He knew what he ought to do. He’d known you’d ruined good sleep for him for posterity the moment he’d woken up beside you three mornings prior. You’d been the little spoon, him the big. That’s not how Jeongguk liked his cuddles usually (he didn’t like cuddles period) but you had come to him seeking protection as part of the unsaid roommate loyalty and trust agreement and he had to oblige you.
