Leave Before You Love Me

-Pairing: Yoongi x reader

-Premise: Yoongi needs to escape you before anything gets more complicated than it already is.

-Genre: Just straight up angst

-Author's Note: Welcome to my jukebox, since every story I write is based off a song, apparently...today's tune? Leave Before You Love Me by Marshmello and Jonas Brothers. As always, knowing the song is helpful but not necessary. Enjoy!

5:01 AM.

Yoongi presses harder on the gas pedal, pushing his car into going 160 kph. He’s bleary eyed, and he knows this is dangerous. He should slow down. He’s tired. But he needs to get away from you.

You started this mess. This was supposed to be easy. Simple. Non-complicated. The two of you had met at a fan sign 3 months ago. He was taken by how normal you seemed. Sure, you were excited to be there, but you weren’t crying, you weren’t screaming. He was intrigued when he heard you next to him holding a conversation with Jin like you had been friends for years. When you slid down the line in front of him, you smiled at him and there had been a spark. Conversation flowed easily between the two of you, and you had even had some flirty banter even within the timed confines of the fan sign. As you began to move again, this time to talk to Jimin, Yoongi slid you his phone number wedged into your album he had signed. He knew he was being stupid. Reckless, even. What if you weren’t interested? What if you published his phone number for the world to see? But you didn’t. You texted him the next day.

Texts. Then calls. Then FaceTimes. A month in, you were sneaking over to each others’ apartments in the dead of night. No one could know anything, not even the other boys. You knew that. Yoongi knew that. But that didn’t stop that small spark between the two of you as it began to grow from a spark to a flame.

5:10 AM.

Incoming Call

Yoongi winces as his phone starts to ring. He knows it’s you. Who else would be calling this early in the morning? You must have woken up and noticed the empty spot in your bed where he had lain merely hours before.

This had gotten too complicated. Yoongi didn’t do this. He didn’t do relationships. The topic hadn’t actually come up, but he knew it was coming, and he needed to run before it happened. He’d noticed the starry look in your eyes when you made eye contact with him, and how you were suddenly more into cuddling and hanging out than you were whenever this started. How did he let himself get in this deep? He can feel his heart sink deeper and deeper into his body as you call a second, third, fourth time. He never should have stayed over that one night a week ago. He should have left, like he always did.

Yoongi runs his hand through his hair haphazardly. He hates himself for doing this to you. Yes, he didn’t do relationships, but he also always made sure that anything he started he was on the same page with the other person. You had agreed to his terms. Nothing in public. Only hanging out at night. No titles. No relationship. He should have seen the change sooner.

Instead, he had stared at your ceiling last night for hours, debating what he should do. Wake you up and tell you? That seemed cruel, and you were so tired all the time from being overworked. A text? That wasn’t enough. He settled for writing you a letter at 4AM that morning, hunched over your desk, scribbling out his apology, marking through incomplete thoughts, wondering how badly you would hate him when all was said and done.

I’m sorry...I never meant for things to get this complicated. If this feels out of the blue to you, I’m sorry for that too-but I have a feeling you might know what this is about. I can’t be in a relationship with you. I know you’re starting to have deeper feelings for me-I can tell by the way you look at me. You deserve much better than me, someone who can spend time with you more. In public. In daylight. Hell, one of the other members would be better for you than me. You’ve done nothing wrong, this is all on me. I don’t do relationships, I’m shit at them. I should have ended things sooner, but I was selfish and didn’t. I just need to end this before you love me…

He had left the letter in his place in your bed, then left. Now he was speeding through Seoul with no destination in mind other than to get far away from you...but what he was really trying to run from was his own feelings. Doubt that he had made the right choice. Guilt for not telling you anything in person. Hurt because he really did care for you. Loneliness. Deep, aching loneliness. Maybe one day he would deserve to be in a relationship with someone as good as you.

At the very least he had saved you additional heartbreak by leaving now. Before you really had the chance to fall in love with his broken self. His phone lights up again, this time with a text from you. He glances over quickly, and sees only two words.

...too late.

AH I LOVE THIS STORY!! I can’t wait for the next installment when that happens...also it is now canon that Seokjin listens to 80s glam rock, I will accept nothing less.
