Why can’t I have normal dreams?

If I'm being honest, now that I look at other people's dreams about Harlan Ellison, I wonder why every dream I have about him involves us either dating, being married, or even having kids. Like, seriously, why can't I just have one dream where we're debating, or just having a normal (or even chaotic) interaction?

The dream I had last night was about him and me going on a date to a bookstore/library. During the dream, we just talked about our favorite things, listened to each other, read to each other, and I mostly just drew him. I clearly remember sketching him while he was looking away for a while, and as I was drawing, he looked at me and said, "Looks like we're each other's muses, hm?" To which I replied, "Oh, really? I hadn't thought of that." We spent the entire dream flirting back and forth and doing the usual couple things. Then we went to his house, and, well, things got freaky.

Why is it that every time I dream about him, it always ends up like that? 😭🙏🏽 Anyway, that’s the dream I had of him. Send help, please! <3

I had a weird dream

Okay, this dream started out in my freshman year science class. (Weird, I know) I walked in and saw a head poke out above one of the large monitors my science teacher had in the room. There he was, the man, the myth, the legend, Harlan Ellison. He was going to be the substitute teacher for the day. Except, his name wasn’t Harlan Ellison… it was Oliver- something. I don’t remember his last name. I smiled at him and set my stuff down. He made a joke about my outfit (can’t remember what the joke was) and I smiled.

Suddenly, the dream randomly skipped to the gym. There was a large stage set up in the corner. I walked to the stage. A white paper was taped to the microphone stand. It said “Siouxsie couldn’t make it. Oliver _____ will be substituting.” (I used to be SUPER into Goth music, so I guess my subconscious missed Siouxsie Sioux)

I looked over at one of my friends and said “Oh my god, look at who’s gonna be Siouxsie Sioux.” I look over and see Oliver (Harlan) sitting on the bleachers with a microphone in his hand. I sat a few seats away and watched him. He started singing in the most monotone, awkward voice ever. (He wasn’t that bad…)

The dream ended there. T-T

I think I've sorta figured out why it bothers me so much when people simplify Harlan Ellison to just being a very hateful man or say that he's "rolling in his grave" about every dumb fandom behaviour (he would not care about you shipping the characters, be serious) or compare him to AM/say he's his self-insert.

lt's bcs this language does not allow him to be viewed as the complex person that he, and every person to exist, is.

I think it's good to criticise creators and Ellison was VERY worthy of criticism, but he's not some being running on hatred and hatred alone as so many "fans", primarily the ones who discovered he existed less than a year ago on tik tok, seem to describe him. Criticise him on his stubbornness to accept his wrongdoings, his underlying misogyny and racism in his writing, his defence of Ed Kramer, etc.

In the same breath, I'd also like to say I think, when it comes to someone as complicated as Ellison, it's also worth noting the good deeds he did alongside his wrongful behaviour.

Ellison, as he would frequently mention, was outspoken about his political beliefs and was a part of many movements. He protested the Vietnam War, he was a part of the civil rights movement, he joined the writers strike, and was passionate about the rights of creators.

He was also a major hypocrite and always believed he was right, and no one was worth listening to even if they had more experience than him in that topic. He was especially reluctant of listening to people's criticisms of his work and it's depiction of minorities.

He was complicated. He was not an especially just or kind person, but he was passionate and outspoken and more than just angry little man.
