So Matt (Leon’s VA) recently did an interview where he talked about Leon’s trauma, and it was heartbreaking. He mentioned how Leon carries so much guilt for everything that’s gone wrong, even things he can’t control, and how it lead him to developing alcoholism and going into a depressive spiral (in Vendetta) but having friends and knowing that people care about him is what allowed him to recover, and why he’s doing so much better in Death Island. In other words, Chris tracking him down to the hotel in Colorado is what potentially saved his life. Chris showing up telling Leon that he needs him, signifying that Leon isn’t alone and that someone cared is what allowed him to start his recovery. Working with a team, having Becca and Claire and Jill and Chris all there with him, that’s gave Leon the courage to continue doing what he does, despite the obstacles he faces. Knowing that he’s not alone and other people have experienced it too, having friends and people that he can rely on. This gives even more weight to the “I need you” scene from Vendetta.
