You Know That One Character? Hes From That One Fandom Based Off Of A Book That Is Huge And Most People

You know that one character? He’s from that one fandom based off of a book that is huge and most people don’t read. He’s a dark haired, depressed guy who’s in love with a small, angry boy and is part of a group of students who are trying to save their home city and annoys the boy he loves just to get attention, especially by calling him nicknames he hates and is super smart and brave even though no one expects him to be. He is the character whom people often make a musician or artist with a sad backstory in their fics and was willing to die just to the love of his life wouldn’t die alone facing the enemy and never got the chance to express his feelings. His name starts with an R and the boy he loves’ name starts with an E. You know him? Surely there’s only one character that fits that description...

when richie tozier is 7 years old, he meets stanley uris. in his best impersonation of a british butler, he tells him about how he had just fallen off the monkey bars. stan just stares at him. when richie asks if he wants to hear another voice, stan tells him he would prefer it if he just shut up, actually. they decide that they should probably be best friends.

when richie tozier is 8 years old, he meets eddie kaspbrak. stan watches as richie’s face lights up. he looks at eddie, wearing a bigger smile than should be physically possible, and then back at richie. stan understands immediately. 

when richie tozier is 13 years old, he tells stan he’s gay. stan raises his eyebrows, says, “you don’t say?’’ and asks if richie’s going to eat the last slice of pizza.

(he also tells him he loves him. and he’s proud of him. and supports him. obviously.)

when richie tozier is 17 years old, he ditches his prom date for a song and drags stan onto the dance floor. they swing each other around, stan laughing loudly while richie sings along. they don’t notice bev’s camera, and when she gets the photos developed she asks for two copies. richie keeps it in his wallet. stan frames his.

when richie tozier is 18 years old, he gets accepted to the same college as stan. when richie asks if he wants to be roommates, stan looks at him like he’s an idiot and tells him he already bought the microwave. 

when richie tozier is 21 years old, stanley uris gets engaged to patty blum. when stan asks richie to be his best man, richie throws himself at stan, crying, “i knew you loved me!” stan sighs and pats richie on the back while he crushes him.

(no, he doesn’t smile. not even a little bit.)

richie’s speech features no less than four voices, throws the five minute rule out the window, and is, at times, borderline insulting. stan rolls his eyes, laughs, shows off his best poker face, and only cries once. twice. three times. 

when richie tozier is 35 years old, he is a household name. patty puts his new comedy special on after dinner the day it comes out. stan ignores it for his favorite puzzle. he’s heard it all before, anyway, because richie calls every day to run jokes by him. stan always tells him he isn’t funny. richie always says, “tell it to my millions of fans!” stan always hangs up. when richie starts doing his british guy impression, stan looks up and smiles fondly. patty pretends she didn’t see. 

(she also pretends she doesn’t see him forget his puzzle and watch the rest. and if stan laughs at every joke, well, that’s between the two of them.)

when richie tozier is 40 years old, he finally proposes to eddie kaspbrak. richie gets down on one knee, pulls out a ring pop, and asks stan to be his best man. stan just wrinkles his nose and says, “i hate grape.”

(he eats it, though. and wears the ring for the rest of the day.)

by the end of his speech, there isn’t a dry eye in the house. stan watches in amusement as richie, who had been crying since, “good evening everyone, i’m stanley uris,” finishes eddie’s emergency package of tissues. when richie is done, he stands up. “stan the man,” he says seriously, “i love you.” for once, stan has nothing witty to say. “i love you, too, richie,” are the only words that come to mind.

(richie’s hug feels like it bruises a couple ribs. stan tells him they’re getting too old for this. richie ignores him.)

I literally can’t stop thinking about an IT and Les Mis crossover. Like the Amis hear about how intolerant Derry is so they show up and try to change things by teaming up with the local outcasts. It starts out serious enough with Mike teaching them about Derry’s past and Ben shows them places to hold a protest, but soon they’re at the quarry and chaos happens. Grantaire and Richie team up to annoy their boyfriends while Stan and Combeferre look on in fond annoyance. Eddy and Enjolras spend a lot of time wondering aloud why they ended up dating these two idiots but when they think no one can hear them they pretty much fangirl over them. Jehan and Ben write poems together whenever Jehan wasn’t too busy cooing over how Richie was a mini Grantaire, while Bev and Eponine smoke and bond over the idiot boys they’ve ended up being friends with. Richie joins them for a bit, and both pretend to be annoyed by him, but Bev’s barely suppressed smiles and Eponine’s abnoxiously ruffling his hair made it known they didn’t mind it. Richie’s jokes had only gotten more annoying throughout the day with Courfeyrac’s encouragement. They all are scolded by Eddie and Joly, whom the others tried to keep away from each other out of fear they would feed off each others’ fears, but instead they end up talking about how difficult it is to be constantly afraid and how they’ve been trying to cope. Bev and Eponine talk about their dads, and Grantaire and Richie also end up having some serious conversations about their childhoods and dealing with homophobia, and Grantaire teaches him some self defense for when Bowers attacks while Enj and Eddie try not to stare. Combeferre and Stan talk about moths and birds and Jehan goes bird watching with them before leaving to make flower crowns with Bev. Gavroche completely corrupts Georgie and the two cause mischief for hours, Courfeyrac giggling right along with them. Mike shows Bahorel and Bossuet around the farm, but Bossuet leaves shortly after being attacked by three chickens. Mike barely controls his laughter enough to help. Bahorel ends up walking around with ten kittens in his arms for the rest of the day. One of the cats ends up in Enjolras’ sweatshirt hood and the only clue to how it got there was a snickering Grantaire, Courfeyrac, and Mike. Bill and Feiully just sit quietly and watch with amusement as the chaos unfolds, and sometimes Enjolras joins them. At one point Feiully leaves to go talk more history with Mike. No one’s really sure why, but Feiully becomes Bev’s favorite, after Eponine, and Richie’s too, after Grantaire. Eponine sat by Bill as well, and he looked absolutely terrified but calmed down as they started talking.

So I watched IT Chapter 2 while flying somewhere and pulled up the subtitles for Stan’s letter and have been blessed with this knowledge: Richie says be true, Eddie says be brave, Mike says stand, and Bev says believe. And of course Bill says “and don’t ever forget” and Stan says “we’re losers and we always will be.”
