just making myself cry by thinking about the super sad kassandra fic i wanna write. the one where kass and her soulmate (you) first meet during the peloponessian wars and they go on all these crazy adventures, until kass has to navigate the fact that she's gonna be immortal and her soulmate is...not. and then it happens. they don't meet again until the isle of skye, where kassandra can't believe her eyes and nearly gets stabbed by eivor's hidden blade when she recognizes soulmate's voice, only she's not calling for kassandra. and eivor can tell there's some tension when it's the three of them, when kass casually mentions soulmate reminds them of someone they "used to know". and it hurts kassandra's heart, worse than anything aspasia could've done, to hear and see and know that soulmate is eivor's love. that kassandra can't hold her, kiss her, love her. that her soulmate is there and yet she isn't. and it hurts that she keeps looking at kassandra like she knows her, with a look that's trying to place all the blurry memories into their appropriate corners. but she can't. and then, after the rather silly flyting friendly during the wedding after everything's said and done, kassandra goes outside for a moment to breathe. she can't stay, she's always known that, and everything so far has made her feel even more so out of place. soulmate finds her, says nothing for a little while, until she says "it feels like i should know you, like i've known you for a long time." kassandra chortles into her drink, unbelieving of the irony and the cruelty of her immortality. "she can tell, eivor, i mean." she says, again kassandra only hums, eyes looking at everywhere but soulmate. "she's not unkind. if anything, she's a little too understanding of everyone around her." kassandra chews on her lip, looking at the last foamy bits of the mead, thinking of markos' awful no good wine and how she could've gone for some of that right now. "she's...very fortunate to have you. i know i was." she finally says, and it takes a strength more mighty than ajax to admit that. soulmate hums, "i think...i think i understand now, where i used to fit into your life." kassandra nearly jumps, looking at your hand on her shoulder, then at your face that held such a melancholy look, "i'm really sorry i can't be more for you. but eivor-" "i understand." she has to, especially when she has to go on for nearly another millenia without you after having to bury you again after you've had an entire life with eivor. and then, after insisting that layla take the staff, she says to her, "sometimes...i think about a simpler life. with her. our own stand in the agora, she used to make the best bread. maybe with some sort of family of our own." kassandra feels herself light in layla's arms, closing her eyes.

when she opens them, she finds herself on the adrestia again, hearing you calling out to her from where barnabas usually stands as well.

"where to?"

Me: "I'm not going to romance shadowheart."

Also me: *continues to keep her at my side 'just because I like her'*
