"what the hell am I doing here," [name] asked himself as he stood outside nekoma's gymnasium doors.
[name] would never admit it to anyone but kuroo did touch something deep inside him when he mentioned joining the volleyball team.
as his mother said, he used to love volleyball.
used to.
[name] peeked through the slight opening of the gym doors as he watched nekoma's volleyball club practice.
his heart felt warm.
he forgot how it felt, the adrenaline when he would play all those years ago.
he missed it.
"can I help you with something?" [name] jumped a little as he turned around to see who caught him in this position. "oh! [last name] I've never seen you around this part of the school before."
it was the volleyball coach, coach naoi. he was a confident male with dark, short-cut hair. [name] liked him. he's a pretty cool dude.
"oh yeah um.... I was just," [name] didn't know what to say. he fully didn't intend on being caught and planned to make his grand escape after a bit of snooping.
"do you want to join the volleyball club, [last name]?" coach naoi asked with a small smile on his face.
he knew of [name] and had spoken to him a couple of times when they pass by each other in the hallways. coach naoi viewed him as a bright young kid that would be going to places.
"hmmm," [name] contemplated on saying no and leaving. "I'm not quite sure. I haven't played volleyball in years."
"that's alright! just come join us for a couple of days and see how you like it. you can act as our manager for the time being," coach naoi offered.
it was a pretty solid offer.
[name] gave the man a small smile, "sure."
the two walked through the doors while the sounds of shouting and sneakers screeching started to cease.
"everyone listen up!" the tall coach shouted which made everyone fully stop. "I would like to introduce you guys to [last name] [name]. as of today he will join us as a manager. please take care of him."
"nice to meet you," even though he had a blank face, [name]'s voice was sincere and warm as he bowed down to his future club members.
kenma, a guy from his class, gave him a small smile while kuroo gave him a gengar-easque smirk.
"NICE TO MEET YOU, [last name]!"
"isn't he kenma's classmate?"
"welcome to the club, [last name]!"
"YAHOOOOO WE FINALLY GET A MANAGER!"
"SHUT UP, LEV!"
jeez, what did [name] get himself into?
as coach naoi got the team started on their drills, [name] turned towards the other coach.
"coach nekomata, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm [last name] [name]," the young male said as he bowed to his elder.
"no need for that," coach nekomata said, waving him off. "I know who you are, [last name]. you were quite the powerhouse during your time at ushimi middle school."
"you know of that?" [name] asked, surprised. "and please, just call me [name]."
"of course. anyone would want to catch the son of the great [last name] makoto in action."
[name]'s mood slightly dampened at the mention of his father.
"so what do I exactly do as a manager? I've only been a player for a volleyball team and ushimi didn't have a manager."
"it's quite easy. you mainly just need to fill and hand out water bottles and towels. you can help catch naoi by handing him some volleyballs or collecting stray ones. you can also set up and take down nets and clean the gym when we're all finished," nekomata explained. "are you not returning as a player?"
"maybe I will again, someday. I'm just not used to playing it again right now," [name] sat down on the bench beside the elder. "coach naoi offered to let me stay here for a couple of days, act as the team's manager for the time being, and see how I feel."
"hmmm, I see. well I hope you return to the field again someday. it was magnificent watching you play," nekomata gave the boy a closed eye smile.
"thanks."
as the day progressed, [name] fulfilled his duty as manager. giving water and towels to the members. refilling the water bottles. and assisting coach naoi when needed.
during that time, most of the nekoma members couldn't take their eyes off of him.
I mean, THE [last name] [name] was THEIR manager?
unreal.
unbelievable.
ain't no way.
"so, [last name], you decided to join our team after all," kuroo said as he took a sip from the water bottle that the other male handed to him.
"it wasn't because of you if that's what you think," [name] gave kuroo a disgusted face.
"you wound me, truly, [last name]," kuroo said as he pretended to hold his heart in pain.
"you're so dramatic," he rolled his eyes and pushed the rooster head face away.
[name] then turned his attention to a certain pudding head who was sipping his water bottle in peace.
"you did good, kozume," he complimented the quiet male.
"thank you, [last name]," kenma smiled at his new manager.
"hey, what about me? I did pretty well today too," kuroo gave them a triumphant pose.
[name] ignored him.
"we don't need to be formal with me [last name] we're in the same class, just call me kenma."
"if only you call me [name] as well."
"can I call you, [name]?" kuroo chirped.
"no," [name] side-eyed kuroo as he visibly deflated.
"[name]," a short sandy-haired male said walking towards him. "never thought I'd see a [last name] as a manager instead of a player."
"you know about me too, yaku-senpai?"
"naturally," yaku replied. "I know you from ushimi middle school too and considering who your father is as well, it's not hard to know you."
"hmm, I thought it would die down since I left volleyball all those years ago."
"you come from two famous parents, [last name]. it's only reasonable for people to know who you are," yaku replied honestly.
even though what yaku said was true, it still brought [name]'s mood a little low since all his life people had expectations of him. especially his father.
"you don't need to worry about that though, [name]. we're your teammates, we expect nothing but your help and support," another, rather soft, voice said while yaku hummed in agreement.
[name] saw a guy with jet-black hair that was shaved into a buzzcut.
"Nobuyuki Kai, but you can call me kai," the male smiled warmly at the cold male.
"nice to meet you kai-senpai, you can call me [name] too," [name] directed the last part to both kai and yaku.
"[LAST NAME]-SENPAIII" a tall grey-haired male screamed running towards the group. "it's nice to finally get to talk to you! many of the girls in my class always talk about how handsome and unapproachable you are but I don't think you're scary at all. maybe your face is though. you should smile more, you'll be less scary. oh yeah, my name is haibi lev!"
many were shocked, but not surprised by lev's bluntness but [name] didn't seem phased by it, actually, he was amused.
"thanks, I'll keep that in mind," [name] stated.
"are you going to come hang out with us after practice? it's kuroo turn to buy us ice cream."
"LIKE HELL I'M PAYING FOR ALL OF YOU!"
"HEY! YOU HELD OFF YOUR END OF THE BARGAIN FOR 2 WEEKS, STOP BEING A FREELOADER!"
"yeah, come on kuroo. [name] is joining too, take it as a welcoming gift for him," inuoka suggested coming up from behind [name].
"fine," kuroo grumbled.
[name] looked on confused, "I am?"
"it'll be nice to hang out with you, [name]. we can all get to know you and you know... vice versa," shibayama said with a soft smile.
"only if you want to, [name]," kai reminded.
"I would love to but I need to pick up my little sister before it gets dark. I don't want her going home alone at night," [name] said taking a glance out the window, the sun had already set.
"oh shit, has she been waiting long?" yaku asked worriedly. he knew their practices take quite a bit of time.
"no don't worry about it. my little sister normally helps around her elementary school's garden with other students and teachers after school. she wasn't able to tend to the flowers yesterday because of the rain. if I leave now, I think I'll just make it," the new nekoma manager explained.
"nice time then?" kenma asked.
"next time," [name] nodded. "I should get going now."
"wait!" kuroo held out his hand to the male to halt him. "you should give me your number so you can be added to the nekoma volleyball group chat. just to socialize and be informed of plans."
"is this just an excuse to get my number?" the manager raised his eyebrow.
"partially," kuroo smirked. "but genuinely, it's so we can all communicate with each other."
"sure."
as they exchanged their numbers [name] headed toward both nekoma coaches who were patiently waiting for him.
"so, [last name]. what do you think?" nekomata asked the male.
"you have an interest group of people you coach," [name] stated as both the coaches gave him a small laugh.
"interesting enough for you to stay?"
[names] mouth twitched a little but remained in a straight line, "yeah..."
"perfect!" coach naoi exclaimed as he handed [name] a piece of paper. "here's the sign-up sheet to officially be a part of nekoma's volleyball team! we're honoured to have you. oh! and before i forget to tell you, we're going to be at shinzen high for a week after summer break starts."
"okay, thanks," [name] bowed to both of the coaches as he departed from the high school, ready to make his walk toward seichi elementary school.
as he waited for his bus to arrive he felt the constant buzzing of his phone.

every school under the fukurodani academy group takes turns hosting training sessions but shinzen always hosts the week-long ones. we just do a bunch of practice matches and try to improve our skill and technique basically

a/n: not me coming back after 3 years

not many people know much about [name] on a personal level at school.
he didn't seem to hang out with anyone during school hours, not like many people would try.
[name] has a syndrome called "the resting bitch face" that intimidated a lot of people. not only that but he is also at the top of his class which fuels the fire of him being untouchable.
many girls in nekoma had a crush on the second-year boy. although he was aloof, he does have a handsome face and an aura that oozes out confidence but not in an arrogant way. he was just so... attractive.
[name] sat boredly in his math class as the teacher went on about logarithmic. he span his pen around his fingers as he turned towards the large windows.
it was grey outside and he sees dark clouds surrounding the sky.
"fuck," [name] cursed inside his head as he continued to glare out the window. he was in a rush getting out of the house today and didn't have time to check the weather forecast. he definitely didn't bring an umbrella to school.
[name] just hopes his little sister had time to pack one.
normally the two [last name] siblings would go to school together but [name] had to go out early to run some errands before school started.
the boy was so zoned out he didn't even hear the school bell ring until he heard his teacher say, "Class dismissed".
many of his classmates already left the classroom before he finally got up to collect his belongings.
it was the end of the day and students were getting ready for their clubs or staying after school to study. [name] didn't bother joining a club since he had other responsibilities to attend to.
when he exited his classroom many female students were loitering around wanting to get a glimpse of the handsome boy. some pretended to go through their lockers while some were in groups of circles, gossiping to their girl friends.
[name] paid them no mind however as he walked towards the front doors of the school, eager to get out and pick up his little sister before it starts to pour.
as he changed into his outside shoes and turned around, he accidentally bumped into a girl whose stuff was now all over the floor.
"[last name]-senpai! i'm so sorry!" the girl stuttered frantically as she bent down to try and collect her papers as quickly as possible.
"don't bother," came his short reply as the girl froze up, scared and embarrassed. "it was my fault."
[name] crouched down and picked up the remaining papers swiftly. he couldn't help but look at the contents of the papers.
croissant recipe. how to make a red velvet cake. how to pipe flowers on cupcakes.
ah... this girl is from the baking club.
"thank you, [name]-senpai!" the girl blushed as she took the papers from his hands.
"don't mention it," [name] remarked and started walking towards the exit.
"wait-!" she gasped, wanting to say more to the male but he was already outside the door.
he walked a few blocks before turning the corner to his bus station but to his demise, he saw his bus leaving as soon as he turned the corner. not only that but it started to rain... heavily.
"what a shitty day," [name] grumbled as he stood at his bus station, waiting for the next bus to arrive in the cold rain.
after a couple of minutes, he decided to sit down on the floor, tired from standing still for 15 minutes. he didn't care anymore, he was already soaking wet from head to toe so it was not like sitting on the wet floor would make a difference.
[name] zoned out again as he continued to wait. he didn't realize the rain stop attacking his body until he looked up and saw a male wearing the same uniform as him, with his bed head sticking out from all directions.
"you're [last name] [name]," the rooster head said as he held out his umbrella for the both of them.
"yeah? and what's it to you?" came his reply as he continued to sit on the ground.
"tsk tsk tsk no need to be hostile, [last name]," the other boy chided as he wore a smile on his face despite [name]'s rude reply.
"and who are you?"
"kuroo tetsurō."
"the volleyball captain?"
"oh? so you have heard of me."
"all bad things."
"nobody likes a liar, [last name]."
[name] just rolled his eyes and ignored the boy.
"i've heard a lot about you too," kuroo said eyeing the boy.
"what do you want?"
"just to talk. i know you don't hang around a lot of people. kenma told me, he's in your class."
"so what? I'm a pity case? i don't need friends."
"everybody needs friends, [last name]. and it's not a pity case, I actually find you quite intriguing."
"and? why is that?"
"you're so popular yet nobody knows who you really are. you haven't joined any clubs yet and you're at the top of your year."
"are you stalking me?"
"nope. word travels fast in nekoma."
"what do you want?" [name] finds himself asking this question again.
"you should join the volleyball team."
"not a chance," kuroo frowned a little at his response.
"why not?"
"are you kidding me? it's July. it would be too late to join any sort of club."
"it's never too late."
"I don't know a single thing about volleyball."
"so? we'll teach you. you're pretty smart, you'll catch on quick."
"no."
"why not?"
God, [name] hated why notters.
"why do you want me to join so bad?"
"kenma is observant. you guys are in the same year and pe class. he tells me you're smart and quick with your strategies. finding out people's weakness in a matter of seconds and working around it."
"is that all you want me for? didn't you say your friend is observant? I think you guys are fine without me."
"I know who you really are. who you were."
"what the hell is that suppose to mean?" [name] snapped, standing up.
"you went to ushimi middle school and played as their wing spiker. you were a volleyball player."
"so you are a stalker."
"no, I'm just really good friends with that airhead wing spiker that played during your second year."
[name] only knew one airhead wing spiker during his middle school days, bokuto kōtarō.
"I don't play anymore."
"why n-"
"if you say why not one more time I'm going to punch you in the face."
kuroo bit back a smirk, knowing he irked the male.
"consider my invitation," kuroo said as [name]'s bus finally arrived.
he didn't say a word to kuroo and got on his bus, not sparing the volleyball captain a glance.
"you're late," [name]'s younger sister, [last name] kazuha, pointed out as she saw her older brother approaching her elementary school.
"yeah I know, I'm sorry," the older one out of the two replied as he took his sister's froggy umbrella and held it for the both of them, his other hand holding onto his sister's.
"what happened?" kazuha looked up at him with her adorably big [eye colour] eyes.
"hmm... don't worry about it. just tell me about your day while we walk home," he offered a small smile to kazuha as she brightened up and told her older brother all the exciting things she learned.
"go upstairs and do your homework but don't be too loud okay? mommy's resting," [name] whispered and put his finger in front of his mouth in a hush symbol.
"okay! I will be quiet for mommy," she whispered and copied his hush motion as well.
kazuha quietly ran up the stairs while [name] dropped his bag on the floor with a loud sigh and loosened his school tie.
[name] went up to his room as well and took a shower, changing into some nice warm and dry clothes.
he went over to his mother's room where she was still soundly asleep. he walked over to her window and pulled the curtains to let light through. it wasn't much light but enough to make the once pitch-black room have some sight.
he heard a groan and turned toward his mother.
"oh, sweetie. you're back from school?" the woman smiled at her child weakly.
"yeah, it's raining cats and dogs out there," he commented.
"sounds like a good day to stay in bed."
[name] didn't mention how she always stayed in bed for the past few years.
he walked towards her and sat on the edge of her bed, grabbing something from the nightstand.
"mother, I'm going to have to take a look at your arm."
"no," came her cheeky reply.
"mother," [name] said sternly as he prepared the thing in his hands.
"fine..." she muttered and gave her son her arm.
it was silent when [name] gave his mother her medicine.
she sometimes felt guilty about how [name] had to take care of her and little kazuha when he should be going out and hanging out with friends at his age.
"how was your day, [name]?"
"same old routine. I got drenched by the rain though."
"what did I tell you about being prepared for the weather, [name]?" she scolded her son lightly.
"sorry I was in a rush."
I was getting groceries before school.
"you can get sick, [name]!"
not as sick as you, he said in his head.
"it's okay, mother. a guy... offered me his umbrella."
"oh really? that's nice of him," she smiled.
"he offered me to join our school's volleyball club..."
"that's wonderful! you haven't played in so long."
"I didn't say I was going to join."
his mother frowned.
"but you loved volleyball..."
"you know I stopped playing after he left."
"that shouldn't stop you from playing it. volleyball used to be your passion."
his mother, ayaka, was sad to hear her son did not want to join his high school's volleyball club. when he was younger he wasn't passionate or enthusiastic about many things except volleyball.
she was happy when her son found something he finally loved but after some stuff happened, he swore to never play volleyball again.
"get some rest while I make dinner, I'll wake you up when it's finished," [name] said after a couple of moments of silence passed and he stood up to walk out of her room.
[name] sighed as he took some of the groceries he bought earlier that day and started cooking dinner. the cooking club was nice enough to lend over some free space in their fridge for the boy to put his groceries in.
even though he didn't have friends at school, he was on good terms with most people and is highly respected.
he was really tired when he finished cooking dinner. waking up early, going grocery shopping, attending school, taking care of his kid sister and sick mother, providing dinner, and having to do a closing shift at the Cafe he worked at was too much for a 17-year-old boy.
sometimes [name] wished he could have a different life.
he loves his sister and mother dearly but sometimes he wishes he can be like normal teenage boys his age.
before he delve deeper into self-pity he cursed himself for his selfish thoughts.
no, not today.
he wasn't going to make his day worse by going into his life crisis.
he made a plate for two.
he brought a plate to his mother who thanked him with sad eyes and left the other plate on the dining table.
he opened his sister's bedroom door, where she was sitting in her little makeshift fort.
"dinner is ready downstairs once you're done," he said to kazuha who smiled and thank him.
he went back downstairs and got ready to go to work. this time bringing an umbrella.
even though he was exhausted from a long day, he was ready to work a long night shift with his annoying coworker to provide for his family whom he cares for so much.

Koushi didn't know how to feel when he heard the news of what happened to you.
He should feel devastation, anger, hurt, and many more negative emotions but he just felt numb.
Even though it's been a month already he couldn't wrap his head around it. You, his sweet little brother, is in the hospital right now and he doesn't know whether you're going to live or die and he was going insane.
That year Karasuno didn't go to nationals.
The grey-haired setter felt like shit. One, he's the cause of his younger brother being involved in a car accident (he believes so), and two, he didn't go to nationals for you.
His mind was too boggled from the thoughts of you. Seeing your body lay there in the hospital bed with bandages all over your body, head, and eyes were traumatizing to him.
Seeing you there... you looked lifeless. Like you were already dead and that put a huge strain on Koushi's heart.
He did this.
He caused his little brother to be in this position right now... right?
He called you and you said you weren't feeling good so why did he invite you to come to eat dinner with his teammates? He should've just left you back at home to rest right? You didn't even want to go in the first place, he forced you too, it's his fault that your unconscious in that hospital bed right now. Koushi could never forgive himself for that.
Those thoughts kept circling the setter's mind and it was deteriorating his mental health. He couldn't focus on volleyball practice anymore and his tosses weren't as good as they used to be. The whole team could see their setter falling into a dark hole and they tried to help him the best they could but... Koushi seemed emotionally dead which was very new to them.
Their pillar of support needed a support pillar itself but the boulder that was his little brother was too heavy for them to lift.
Old coach Ukai saw the state his setter was in and let him off of club practice to hopefully recover from the tragic event that happened to his brother.
Koushi refused at first. He was dedicated to volleyball and wanted to get stronger so when his brother wakes up (hopefully) you can see him and his team beat Date Tech's iron wall and be a step closer to going to nationals.
With a lot of convincing, Koushi eventually resigned from the volleyball club to aid his mental health and also focus on his studies because he was lacking ever since you know what happened.
"What are you thinking about, Suga?" Daichi asked from beside the grey-haired teen who was leaning on the windowsill. "Him, again?"
"Of course it's always him, Daichi," Koushi mumbled as he gazed outside. "It's been nearly a year since the accident... they said [Name] wasn't getting any better or worse. They were going to pull the plug but my parents and I begged them not to... that there was still hope."
Daichi looked down at his shoes. Even though he was closer to the grey-haired Sugawara, Daichi has met you plenty of times and even considered you a little brother as well. The car accident hit him hard as well but he could imagine what it felt like for Koushi. If one of his little siblings got hurt as bad as you, he would be in the same position as Suga.
"[Name] is a strong boy. He's been fighting for almost a year now, just give him more time," Daichi replied but Koushi didn't respond back, he just gripped the windowsill tighter.
It's nearing a year.
A year since he last been with his brother.
He visited the hospital every day but it wasn't the same as walking to school every weekday or annoying you to cook him super spicy mapo tofu.
"Let's go to the art classroom. Maybe it'll help ease your mind. Help you see what your brother saw through his art," the captain of the Karasuno boy's volleyball team proposed. "I know you've been avoiding that room."
Koushi didn't say anything as he walked in the direction of the art room, Daichi trailing behind him. His friend wasn't wrong, he has been avoiding that room. The setter knew you were a talented artist. When you used to draw something for him when the two of you were younger he was surprised how advance your art was compared to a regular child your age.
He hasn't seen your more recent art because he was so focused on volleyball and he wanted to know how much your art progressed from the last time he has seen them which was probably 3 years ago.
When the two third-years entered the art classroom they were surprised to see how many people were there already. They looked at each other confused but shook it off as they made their way towards the crowd.
"Woahhh, [Name] was such a great artist."
"Hey, that's Sugawara to you! Show some respect."
"I'm such a fan of his work, it's so pretty!"
"Aw poor, Sugawara... I hope he's okay."
"It's sad how we're not going to see any of his paintings again anytime soon."
"How much do you think this would sell for?"
Koushi couldn't help but be a little pissed. He's stopped by the art room a couple of times to pick you up and walk home together and not once has he seen this happen before.
You were a very talented artist but no one at school outside of the art club and the volleyball club really showed interest regarding your art before.
They cared now after you were on the brink of death.
No one seems to care about an artist or their art before they're dying, close to dying, or are already dead.
The two volleyball members pushed their way through the crowd and stood in front of your art that was displayed. They couldn't help but be taken away by it.
It was so ethereal.
Looked so real.
Koushi knew you were talented but he didn't expect THIS. He's very amazed and proud.
"I knew he had talent but I didn't know he held this much talent," Daichi mumbled to Koushi.
"I... I didn't either if I'm being honest. I knew he was more advanced than most people his age but... this almost looks real," the Sugawara replied.
"Your brother... he's special."
"Trust me... I know, Daichi," Koushi smiled for the first time in a while.
RINNNNNNNNNG
A sound came from Koushi's back pocket as it vibrated. He got his phone out of his pocket and looked at the caller ID.
It was the hospital.
Koushi's heart accelerated.
"Excuse me," the grey-haired teen said as he pushed his way out the crowd of people and out to the mostly empty hallway to take his phone call.
Daichi followed behind him, worried for his friend. He stood off to the side as Suga took his phone call. The brunette couldn't determine the emotion he had on his face.
After his call ended Koushi stood there frozen in shock which frightened the male in front of him.
"Suga, what's wrong? What happened? Who was that?" Daichi asked frantically.
"It was the hospital... they said [Name] woke up."
If you thought sonic was a speedy boy... KOUSHI WILL SHOW YOU SOME REAL SPEED.
He exited through the school gates and ran all the way to the hospital you were staying in. He didn't care if he looked like a maniac. His brother was alive and he needed to be there for you.
When he entered the hospital it looked like he ran a marathon which, to be fair, he probably did run a marathon-worthy distance. He quickly went to the front desk to ask if he could visit his brother and the front desk lady who recognized Koushi (because he visits nearly every day) let him go off to see you.
As he got near your room the doctor just walked out of it.
Talk about perfect timing.
"Doctor! Is he okay?" Koushi squeaked and he neared the man in a long white coat.
"Yes, he is but—" The teen didn't let the older man finish as he entered the room. You being okay was the only thing that he needed to hear.
"Wait! Sugawara—"
"[Name]!" Koushi exclaimed as he got closer to you.
You were laying on your hospital bed, back towards Koushi and facing the big window. He could see your shoulders shaking... like you were crying.
"[Name]... what happened? Why are you crying?" Your brother asked, concerned as he was standing by the side of your bed. The doctor was standing by the doorway, looking at the two sadly.
You turned towards Koushi and that's when he noticed your eyes...
"Koushi-nii... I can't see anything..."

You looked off to the side towards the window as you sighed. Today hasn't been a very interesting day and it left you unable to be motivated to participate in the art club. Your club members have definitely noticed.
But it wasn't all that. This day has been uneventful, yes, however... there was just this very unwanted feeling pooling deep in your stomach that's been hanging over your head ever since you woke up. Like something bad was going to happen.
What can it be tho?
What bad thing can really happen to a 15 year old schoolboy? Your teacher will call on you? You forgot your lunch money? You have a pop quiz today?
Even though those can be considered bad for said high school boy... it just didn't weigh heavy like the one in your gut.
You felt sick almost. Like you wanted to throw up. Maybe you shouldn't have gone to school today... you felt a little lightheaded.
"[Name]-san, are you okay? You look a little dazed... and not the good kind," Wakumi was the first one to ask about your condition.
You liked Wakumi... she was the first friend you made outside of your older brother and his volleyball teammates.
"Oh... I just feel a bit sick at the moment. I feel like I can pass out any moment," you replied to her as you set your brush down and massaged your temples. Wakumi widened her eyes.
"Should I call your older brother? Why did you come to school? You shouldn't have come here!" The girl in front of you panicked slightly, of course, she thought the worse possible thing. "Come here, I'll help you to the nurse's office."
She went to try to pick you up but you stopped her and smiled slightly.
"Don't worry about it, Wakumi. It's not that big of a deal," she backed away as you said that. "Plus I don't want to worry Koushi-nii too much. He's already focused on getting to nationals with his team... He's the team's setter and I know that's a very important position in volleyball. I don't want to distract him when he should be focusing on his team right now."
"But you're his little brother! Surely he would prioritize you more than volleyball!"
"Ahhh, Wakumi you worry too much. I'll head home early today if you're worried, okay? You almost dote on me worse than Koushi and my parents," you laughed and that made the black-haired girl in front of you flustered.
"I just care about you, okay! You're kinda... my first friend," she mumbled the last part to herself but you heard it, of course.
"I know you do... I care about you too," you started collecting your stuff and Wakumi quickly cleaned your palette and brushes thoroughly for you. "Thanks, Wakumi-chan."
"Hey... I just wanted to say but... your artwork is very pretty to look at... you're so talented!" You blushed slightly at her words. "When you get famous... don't forget about me okay!"
"Of course," you grinned at her and patted her head, she pouted a bit. "I would never forget the first friend I made here. Goodbye, Wakumi."
As you walked out, she poked her head out of the art classroom. "See you later, [Name]-san! Get home safely alright."
As you got home and closed the door you lied down on your bed and stared at the ceiling. The silence was definitely not making your stomach feel any better.
You came home earlier than usual so both your parents were at work and Koushi was still at volleyball practice. You weren't all that excited about sports. The feeling of sweat sticking your clothes to your skin always felt uncomfortable. Sure you participate in PE class but would never willingly go out and do athletic stuff unless forced to.
You put on your headphones and turned on some of your favourite songs to drown out the silence. Maybe a short nap would wash away this feeling?
So that's exactly what you did. Slept as you drowned in your music and subconscious.
That was interrupted a few hours later when your music cut off and was replaced with the annoying ringing of your phone.
You groaned and turned to your phone. Your brother is calling you!
You accepted his call.
"Hello?"
"[Name]-channnnnn!"
"Yes?"
"Where are youuuuuuuu?"
"I'm at home."
"Whyyyyy. I thought you were still at your art club! I've been waiting outside the school gates for 10 minutes waiting for you. I passed by that girl you talk to a lot and she said you left early."
"Sorry, Koushi-nii. I just didn't feel good so I went home."
"WHAT!"
Koushi was a bit too loud for your half waken state as you backed away from the phone in your hand.
"ARE YOU SICK? WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME I WOULD'VE LEFT VOLLEYBALL PRACTICE FOR YOU!"
"Don't worry about it, it's not that serious. You should focus on your volleyball team. Aren't you the starting lineup setter? You should focus on getting to nationals."
"Yeah but... you're my brother! It's my duty as an older brother to be there for you..."
"And you're doing a fantastic job as my older brother."
Koushi choked a little.
"But I'm fine, okay? You need to do some stuff for yourself too instead of worrying about me all the time. I don't want to bother you, you should focus on the things that make you happy. Go to nationals for me, alright?"
"Of course! You know I'll do anything for you, [nickname]. The rest of the volleyball team and I are going to head out for some dinner. You should come with us!"
"I don't know... The only people I know there are you, Daichi, Asahi, Yuu, and Ryuu. I feel like it'll be awkward for the other guys for me to be there."
"Aw come onnnnnnnn. They love you. They also haven't seen you in a while and kinda miss you. You should hang out with us more!"
"Aggghhh fine but let me just change my clothes."
"Alright! We'll be waiting at the front gate for you. Can't wait to see you again, my precious little brother!"
"You're so dramatic. We walked to school together. You weren't gone from me for long."
"That was like 10 hours ago!"
"Whatever, I'll see you later."
"LOVE YOU!"
"...love you too."

You sighed and changed out your school uniform to a more casual fit. You noticed that the house was still dark so your parents weren't back home yet.
Setting your slippers aside, you put on your outside shoes and headed off towards the school.
One thing you noticed when you woke up was... that feeling never went away... it was still there.
'Whatever,' you thought. It doesn't matter. All that matters right now was going to school, meeting Koushi and his teammates, and eating dinner with them.
You stopped when a red light appeared on the crosswalk sign. Even though it looked like no cars were coming in miles you still weren't going to cross. The light was red.
Waiting for a few minutes started to feel like hours. Your feet were starting to hurt from standing in the same spot for a few minutes but you sighed in relief when you finally saw it turn green.
You saw a car coming by but you didn't think much of it because you were already clearly on the crosswalk. He was going to stop, right?
Wrong.
The person behind the wheel was heavily sleep deprived and was slowly falling asleep. He did not slow down. He did not stop.
When he realized, it was already too late. You were a mere few centimetres away from him and the sound of your body colliding with the hood of his car left him traumatized.
He did stop... after he already ran over your unmoving body.
He was still for a few minutes. His eyes wide and he was panting.
"Oh my god," he mumbled to himself before he quickly got out the car and towards your body. He panicked. Like a lot. Blood was oozing out of your head and you were faced down.
He got out his phone quickly and dialled 119 to report the unconscious body he ran over. What he failed to noticed was your phone off to the side, Koushi-bear 🐻❤️ displayed on the screen as it rang endlessly.
Koushi was starting to feel a little bit nervous after he called you for the 3rd time. Why weren't you answering? You couldn't lie and say you didn't see it because you were practically always on your phone. And Koushi knew that.
"Hey, is your brother okay?" Daichi asked his grey-haired friend who kept looking down at his phone and looking around frantically.
"[Name] isn't answering..." Koushi said and continued to call your phone again.
"Maybe something bad happened to him?" Nishinoya suggested which made Koushi visibly flinch.
"I sure hope not... I don't know what I would do if something terrible happened to my little brother..." The setter said sadly. "I don't know about this guys... I'm getting worried."
"We'll help you see what's up with, [Name]," Tanaka claimed. "He's our buddy too, you know."
"Thanks, guys," Koushi smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. He was too damn worried.
Why weren't you answering your calls?
Don't jaywalk guys and don't drive sleep deprived, it's just as bad as drinking and driving.
