Arixmethes Homework

Hey all, Commander 2018 looks super sweet and I’m really pumped to get my hands on it soon!

Anyway, this big lobster friend was previewed today, so let’s talk about how this weird card works.

image

First of all, let’s cover the basics:

Arixmethes will enter the battlefield as a land (barring an effect like Solemnity).

This will trigger landfall abilities.

This doesn’t count as playing a land for the turn since Arixmethes was cast as a spell or put onto the battlefield by some other effect.

Arixmethes doesn’t enter the battlefield as a creature and won’t trigger any abilities that care about creatures entering the battlefield.

While Arixmethes is a land, it still has colors and a mana cost. It’s not a Kraken, though. Arixmethes is always legendary.

Arixmethes enters the battlefield tapped, so you can’t tap it for mana unless you untap it somehow.

If you do untap Arixmethes, you can tap it for mana before your next turn begins because because summoning sickness only applies to creatures and it’s not a creature.

Arixmethes switches immediately from land to creature when the last slumber counter is removed from it.

Becoming a creature isn’t a trigger and can’t be responded to. Players will need to respond to the effect that removes the last counter.

Arixmethes just changes types while it’s on the battlefield. It’s not a new object and so it won’t trigger anything that looks for creatures entering the battlefield.

All right, basics out of the way, so let’s talk about some interactions with other cards:

image

Vesuva: Copying Arixmethes with Vesuva will just give you another fresh Arixmethes. Since Vesuva is entering the battlefield as a copy of Arixmethes, it enters with slumber counters just like the real thing. You’ll need to choose one of your lobster friends to keep and send the other to the graveyard (or command zone if Arixmethes is your commander.)

Thespian’s Stage: Copying Arixmethes with Thespian’s Stage works much better than using Vesuva. Because Thespian’s Stage is already on the battlefield, it’s not affected by the “enters tapped with counters” ability and so you’ll have a counter-free lobster friend, which conveniently makes it a creature right away. You’ll still have to choose one Arixmethes to keep, but since the one you copied was a land, maybe keep the one that isn’t?

image

Blood Moon:

If Arixmethes is already on the battlefield as a land when Blood Moon enters the battlefield, then Blood Moon just makes Arixmethes into a Mountain and takes away all of its abilities. It’s still a land.

If Arixmethes enters the battlefield while Blood Moon is on the battlefield, things are a little weird if you think about it too deeply. The TL;DR here is that Arixmethes will enter tapped with slumber counters and is a Mountain with no other abilities.

But why, you ask? Buckle up, because this one is a little brain-melty.

As Arixmethes would enter the battlefield, we look at what effects want to modify how it enters the battlefield. Only Arixmethes’s own ability wants to modify it, so we check to see if anything would prevent that.

For this check, the rules say to “check the characteristics of the permanent as it would exist on the battlefield, taking into account replacement effects that have already modified how it enters the battlefield, continuous effects from the permanent’s own static abilities that would apply to it once it’s on the battlefield, and continuous effects that already exist and would apply to the permanent.”

No replacement effects have already modified how it enters the battlefield, so that’s out.

What about continuous effects from its own abilities? The only one that could apply is the effect that makes it a land, but it doesn’t know that it’s getting slumber counters yet, so that’s not going to apply yet here.

There are no other continuous effects that would apply to it in its current state.

Taking all of these together, we see that nothing is stopping us from applying this replacement effect, so Arixmethes enters the battlefield tapped with slumber counters on it.

Once it’s on the battlefield, Arixmethes’s ability turns it into a land and then Blood Moon pounces and turns it into a Mountain and strips its abilities.

If Arixmethes loses its counters through outside means, such as Vampire Hexmage, it will become a creature and regain its abilities.

Blood Sun: Blood Sun affects Arixmethes the same as Blood Moon does with the exception of leaving its mana ability intact and not making it into a Mountain. Blood Sun locks Arixmethes as a land (while it has counters on it) and doesn’t stop it from entering the battlefield tapped or with counters.

image

Worms of the Earth: If Arixmethes tries to enter the battlefield while Worms of the Earth is on the battlefield, then Arixmethes won’t be able to enter the battlefield (because it’s trying to enter the battlefield as a land) and so it will stay in whatever zone it was in before, unless it was on the stack in which case it will be put into its owner’s graveyard instead. (If Arixmethes is your commander, you can send it to the command zone instead.)

That’s everything I can think of right now, but if you have any more Arixmethes interactions you’d like to know about, comment below and I’ll make an addendum if there are enough common requests.

Weird question but if y’all were stuck in a time loop where you died and then the day restarted over and over again, what slightly insanity-inducing song would be playing every time you woke up

FREE ART PROGRAMS

So recently I came across a fellow artist who was struggling to find a free art program, and considering dropping the large amount of money for a Photoshop license. I know not everyone can afford such an expensive program, so I’ve compiled a list of programs with no cost to download and use.

Keep in mind all computers are different, so not all will work for everyone. Also, I’ve only ever used Windows, so for the most part, I’m not sure if everything will work for Mac. if in doubt check the website linked.

Photoshop CS2 - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)

FireAlpaca - (Windows and Mac)

Sketchbook Copic Edition - (Windows and Mac)

GIMP - (Windows) (Mac)

Paint tool SAI [cracked]  - (Windows) (Mac)

Paint tool SAI 2 beta - (tumblr post on said program)

iPaint - (Mac)

Paintbrush - (Mac)

Pencil - (Windows, Mac)

Paint.NET - (Windows)

Seashore [still in development, ver 0.5] - (Mac)

ChocoFlop - (Mac)

Inkscape - (Mac and Windows)

ArtRage [Demo] - (Mac and Windows)

OpenCanvas 1.1[must pay for 2.0] - (Windows, not sure about Mac.)

MyPaint - (Windows)

Krita - (Windows)

Vectorian [Supports Animation] - (Windows)

Pixia[Japanese, some English versions] - (Windows)

Asperite - (Windows)

Chasys Draw IES - (Windows)

SmoothDraw - (Windows)

TwistedBrush Open Studio - (Windows)

BOUNS - CTRL+Paint [Great for teaching all kinds of stuff, like how to use digital programs.]

If you know more free programs, please add onto this!

Hello! I'm a self taught artist who wants to get better at shading/lighting and backgrounds especially. But whenever I try to do a background study, I can't break it down and it ends up looking terrible. Do you know of anything that would help?

Hello! I'm A Self Taught Artist Who Wants To Get Better At Shading/lighting And Backgrounds Especially.

Hi! I would like to talk a little bit of the thought process behind photo study and the importance of simplicity.

Hello! I'm A Self Taught Artist Who Wants To Get Better At Shading/lighting And Backgrounds Especially.

It is really important to break down an image to chunks of value rather than seeing the detail  first, which can lead to over-complicated mush of colors with no constructed value.

These are some of the artists that inspired me to get used to breaking down images in the most simplest way possible:

Hello! I'm A Self Taught Artist Who Wants To Get Better At Shading/lighting And Backgrounds Especially.

Notice how super simple and straight-on-point his thumbs are? And this is how his colorscript for Moana looks like:

Hello! I'm A Self Taught Artist Who Wants To Get Better At Shading/lighting And Backgrounds Especially.
Hello! I'm A Self Taught Artist Who Wants To Get Better At Shading/lighting And Backgrounds Especially.

Zero detail. Yet you have all the information you need!

I personally think these thumb studies are super important to train your eyes to break down an image in values and colors and therefore be able to organize and design your painting better.

New original 3D animated movie: Ducks. The secret life of ducks when humans aren’t looking.

Whenever ducks fly south in the winter, they’re actually flying to a big city of ducks where they talk and have jobs and have traffic lights with pictures of ducks in them and every billboard and storefront is a bird pun.

A generic duck guy is a young adult who feels inadequate because his dad is a big broker in the bread stock exchange.

He accidentally reveals the secret life of ducks to a human child, and now he must take her south with him to duck city. On the way they get into hijinks and find out about a big duck conspiracy or something.

Notes for a young character designer

Dear E.

Thanks for your email.

I don’t work at Cartoon Network any more. But I’m going to give you a very quick portfolio review in hopes that you find it helpful! Here are some things I noticed when looking at your stuff - lessons I learned from brilliant people while working on AT for two years:

 1) AVOID SYMMETRY. Humans are organic, randomly shaped animals. Perfect symmetry rarely exists in nature and if it does, it’s conspicuous - it’s the exception rather than the rule. Find interesting ways to throw your characters off-balance.

Don’t repeat objects in twos - (buttons or rips or whatever) - it feels prescribed - cluster things in threes or fives if necessary.

 2) AVOID CONCAVITY - I don’t know what else to call this. But it’s those lines that go “in” rather than “out”. You are using inward sloping lines to describe many of your characters. As an exercise, try using outward, rounded, voluminous lines to draw EVERYTHING. Humans are fleshy lumps connected together by other fleshy lumps. Each mass is either in front of or behind other masses and as a designer, it’s your job to tell the animator where it is. As a designer, you are providing a technical blueprint for the location of masses.

Only occasionally allow a concavity to connect two convexities. Look at the work of Robert Ryan Cory (spongebob), Tom Herpich (Adventure Time) or Phil Rynda (AT / Gravity Falls) - master character designers - for examples of this. If you need to, trace a couple of their drawings and you will see what I mean.

 3) AVOID GRAPHIC DETAILS - Some shows use a graphic style; it’s very appealing and looks clever when done right. But in animation, everything needs to move in space - so if you use a graphic element - it needs to correspond with an actual 3D thing that can move. Therefore it is better to start with a voluminous style and then revert to graphic elements where appropriate. Art directors will look for this. Do not jump straight to graphic representation if you do not yet know what you are representing.

Look at the work of Tiffany Ford and Jasmin Lai for amazing examples of volume expressed graphically.

 4) STUDY JAMES MCMULLEN - To truly understand volume, and fully respect your subject, you should read very carefully High Focus Figure Drawing by James McMullen. Slow down and think about drawing “around” your subjects. It’s a truly meditative experience when you get there. Think about the weight and mass that your characters, props and effects are experiencing. Many students from SVA - Tomer Hanuka, Becky Cloonan, Rebecca Sugar, James Jean - studied under McMullen’s philosophy and you can see this common richness in their work.

Jeffrey Smith, a top student of McMullen’s now teaches life drawing at Art Center. These are two of the best illustration schools in North America - anyone who is interested in drawing living things, should probably read his book. Also look at the work of Andy Ristaino or Danny Hynes - two other character designers’ whose work is seething with volume.

I hope this is useful and I hope you have a wonderful career.

Warmest,

Matt

Presenting The New Editions Of All Five Mangoverse Books, A Fluffy Fantasy Series Focusing On LGBTQA+

Presenting the new editions of all five Mangoverse books, a fluffy fantasy series focusing on LGBTQA+ Jewish characters getting happy endings and “found family.” The first four books are full-length, standalone novels; Tales from Perach is all seven in-universe short stories bundled together. I’ve added Hebrew+Yiddish glossaries at the end this time.

The Second Mango - origin story, in which Smol Lesbian Queen and hetero demi warrior woman become besties Climbing the Date Palm - Queen helps the bi prince from next door rescue his activist boyfriend from Certain Doom A Harvest of Ripe Figs - Queen solving mysteries in her capital city, chiefly the theft of a priceless violin, while raising a baby with her bi partner The Olive Conspiracy - Queen saves her country from a plot to sabotage her country’s agriculture Tales from Perach - includes f/f, m/m, and m/f trans romance and also Purim. If you’re familiar with the series but haven’t read Olive yet, and are wondering who the new couple on the cover is, they’re Hadar and Halleli.

I’ve had some problems getting paid, so I got my rights back from my publisher and reposted the entire series myself (with the help of the amazing Jane Dominguez, who turned art commissions from @theloserfish, @erikahammerschmidt, and Caroline C. into covers.)

From this point going forward, if you want to buy one of these books, please buy the editions that have the above art–if you don’t see it in your preferred format (ePub, paperback, etc.) never fear, because those are coming as fast as I can get to them. Paperback proofs have already been submitted to CreateSpace (and all the paperbacks except Mango and Tales have art on the back, too. I’ll share that once the paperback links go live.)

One bonus of this is that most of the books are now cheaper, and unless I’m reading something wrong the paperbacks will be cheaper as well.

What's your design process? ily bye

I LOVE YOU TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and hmm.. . i tend to use a lot of shapes when drawing! and all of them come based off the personality of the character im envisioning!

usually though i tend to focus on the face before designing the rest of the character because once i get the general face shapes i can use similar or complimentary shapes for the body of the character which is as equally as important as the rest is to the design!

uhh lets see …I’ll compare two of my characters and how i redesigned them!

What's Your Design Process? Ily Bye

for Noa I used rounder shapes to make him look young! i also tried to give him a sort of firmer look and you can tell more of that coming from his neck in comparison to Ban’s

for Ban I used triangles and squarish shapes for his face! i wanted it to look long and kind of droopy too!

same applies for their facial features and expression!

What's Your Design Process? Ily Bye

Noa is an energetic boy and is always up for a challenge! I want to keep his face looking childish so i use simple round eyes and some freckles! his nose is a simplified version of one thats pushed up! So yea he’s simple simple simple! I took inspiration from kid’s shows/anime since their designs are also simple but SUPER EFFECTIVE imo!!

Ban is also simple but more in personality than design! his face is made up of two shapes instead of one and his features are long and swoopy! i gave him a wiggly smile to make him look goofy and fun loving and his eye’s droopiness for his gentleness and really relaxed nature! his freckles are more for insinuating he’s a nerd ahaha!!

as for body shapes! (sorry this is a little old!! but the concept is the same!

What's Your Design Process? Ily Bye

You can tell ban’s legs are thinner and longer and noas are shorter compared to his body (his pants are sagging AHA thats more of a stylstic choice kjkfdaf) ban has a lot more longer shapes and limbs than noa does, as noa is supposed to look sturdier and compact!

their posing here is also important: noa looks a lot more ready to go than ban!!

I personally enjoy designs where you can tell straight away that you’re looking at two different characters based on silhouette!

What's Your Design Process? Ily Bye

There are SO many things that make up a character!! it includes hair type, hair color, what clothes theyd wear HOW theyd wear it

Even a characters expressions can be completely unique to them even though theyre making the same ones another character is!

After these steps, for me i really just play around with the above mentioned (hair, clothes, accessories etc. etc.!!)

OF COURSE! a disclaimer: I’m really no expert at this! I’m still learning myself and this is just what I learned from my own experience! Everyone designs characters differently and there is no real solid way to designing a character.

Having fun and drawing what you like is always most important!!

I see a lot of beginner artists missing the mark on drawing profile views, particularly on eyebrows & eyes—I hope this helps! 💖 Obviously you can stylize things however you want, but it’s important to reference & understand how things work in real life before attempting style if you’re concerned at all about believability.
