A study of Thomas Barrow’s pyjamas

I saw some pictures of Thomas from the orange scene in series six (these ones!) and I thought to myself hey those pyjamas are quite nice. Then I remember you get to see everyone in pyjamas in season 2 when they get up in the night to calm down Mr Lang and I found this:

These aren’t the same pyjamas!

They are both stripy but not the same.

The colours are clearer in this one and you can see these are definitely different pyjamas.

So I kept watching and I noticed Mr Lang’s pyjamas were very similar to the ones Thomas was wearing - beige/cream with stripes.

And although he is wearing a dressing gown I’m pretty sure Mr Carson is also wearing very similar ones too!

Is there a pyjama uniform code for men at Downton? Is it beige? Is it stripes? Am I over analysing this?

I tried to find other scenes at night or with pyjamas and we got a few in season 3.

This was the night Sybil died (RIP Sybil)

He’s got dark blue but still stripy pyjamas and also a matching dark blue dressing gown.

But after this for some reason Thomas (and Jimmy) decided to just sleep in their undershirts (I’m pretty sure they are just undershirts as we can see Thomas’s when he is aggressively getting undressed) and black trousers not actual pyjamas but that could be the lighting.

Even when Thomas was beaten up! Although he does seem to be wearing stripy trousers which is odd because surely he would want to wear a matching set like earlier? And they seem too light to have appear completely black like earlier!

So my theory is either: There is a major pyjama continuity error OR there is a pyjama dress code at Downton and at some point between season 2 and season 6 Thomas bought himself some nice new blue and then grey pyjamas so he would stand out from everyone else and their dull beige pyjamas but not break the stripy pyjama code BUT during season 2 undershirt pyjamas were the in thing for staff that or Jimmy forgot to bring his pyjama shirt and Thomas didn’t want him to feel bad.

But that’s just a theory, a pyjama theory! Thanks for reading!
