they're uncomfortable topics, YEAH for SURE

because LIFE is uncomfortable. Death and suicide and sex and pain are straight up going to happen. not having words for the way it discomforts you doesn't make it more comfortable, it just makes you less able to reach out about it.

even more vital, you gotta be able to say words like "rape", "abuse", "queer" or "racist". cause we fought fucking hard to name those experiences. to identify "rape" as distinct from "sex" and "racism" as distinct from "acceptable behaviour" and "queer" as distinct from "invert"

like the function of communication is not to minimise immediate discomfort. we gotta be able to talk about stuff that's hard or sucks or causes difficult conversations.

I mean there are a looooot of complains that Riley has no personality which on some level is true, she’s written to be average so that every kid can see themselves in her in this very distinct Big Company Way …the “average” girlhood experience is actually 1) a white middle class American one and 2) the franchise creator’s daughter’s! HOWEVERRRR she does have a personality, we see it all the time, literally all the fucking time but because we are subsumed in it, continuously, it’s so easy to miss it. The whole POINT of the franchise is to see Riley the opposite way we usually see fictional characters, showing us what she thinks before what she does. The final stretch of the first movie is a good twenty minutes of Riley arguing with herself on wether if running away is a good idea, and making the wrong decision out of anger. The second movie begins by detailing what a hockey match is like for her (putting on my mouth guard! skating like crazy! shit, I crashed into my friend!) but since her thought process is depicted as a dialogue, and every emotion a little creature, it’s very easy to forget it’s all her.

I apparently really like drawing these two cuddling and napping together.

They deserve nice things ☀️

Honestly it boils down to reparenting yourself & rewiring your own neuronal pathways & telling yourself a firm “stop” when you notice your mind slipping down negative loopholes & being present in the moment & enjoying being mid task rather than waiting for it to end & not thinking of inertia as your baseline and natural way of living
