you shake your head and smile, kicking your legs over the bed to sit up straight while you type back a response.

[(name) 💕]: well first i would glare at you because you should be asleep

as if on cue, the doorbell rings. you click your phone off and run to the front door, knowing who will be on the other side.

boyfriend!chenle stands a few feet away, his signature grin visible under the lights on your doorstep.

“surprise!” he says, holding up a plastic bag that has something with a definitive shape inside.

“is today some sort of special day?” you ask, raising an eyebrow as your lips quirk up in a smile.

“it’s wednesday,” he adds optimistically, and he shrugs as if to say, that’s it.

“what’s in there?” your gaze moves to the plastic bag, the straps now twisting around his fingers.

“oh, i got some stuff for us!” chenle stands where he is, and you start to reach for the bag but he pulls his arm back at the last second. “ah-ah. nope.”

you drop your outstretched hand to your side, giving him a look that reads, seriously?

“you gotta pay me,” he says in a sing-song voice. “pay first and then i’ll give it to you.”

“is inviting you into my house not enough?”

“no.” he then turns his head to the side, light reflecting off of the apples of his cheeks as he smiles. “i only accept payment in the form of kisses.”

standing on your tiptoes on the spiky welcome mat, you hold his shoulders to balance as you lean in to press a kiss to his cheek. chenle, however, quickly turns his head and finds your lips with his, humming as he notices that you’re wearing the cherry lip balm he got you for your birthday.

“lele — !” you pull away and peck his face, just above the dimples that are on full display. “i thought you meant on the cheek!”

“well, i never specified what kind of kiss.” he takes off his shoes before entering your house, and you don’t miss his smug expression as he steps inside.

you smile. of course it wouldn’t be that simple.

chenle walks in and sets the bag on your counter, pretending to be shocked when you ask about it again. “oh, you want me to open it? you’re gonna have to give me a couple more kisses, then.”

you sigh, impatient but amused. “how many?”

“three.”

“where?”

“hmm...” he then taps his nose. “i want one here.” he taps his cheek. “and one here. and one —” he places his finger just shy of the corner of his lips — “right here.” he raises an eyebrow at you, daring you to accept the challenge.

you roll your eyes but comply, holding his head in your hands as you kiss his nose, his cheek, and finally the corner of his —

chenle’s arms wrap around your waist to pull you closer as you knowingly fall for his trap. he ignores your red-flushed face, and he doesn’t need to see your ears to know that they’re already burning from your second kiss of the night. this one lasts longer than the first, possibly because it didn’t take you by surprise.

you laugh when he steps back, pretending to complain that he made you miss the final spot, and an unapologetic smirk crosses his face.

“whoops,” he says, his voice void of any regret. “my bad.“

“you know,” you say, “if you wanted to come over you could have just asked. you didn’t need to get anything.”

“mmhm.“

“so how come you bought ice cream at midnight?“

“huh?” he stares at you, confused.

“... why did you buy a carton of ice cream?”

“what? i didn’t buy a carton of ice cream.” you look at him quizzically and he continues. “i bought —” he pulls the sides of the plastic bag down to reveal its contents — “two cartons of ice cream.”

omg first of all thank you for loving ephemeral !!! 💞💓💘 and second, i would love to do a part 2 !!! even as i was writing it i was thinking, “hmm, this sounds like the beginning of a longer fic” but i wanted to post what i have now first XD

i do have a few ideas of what i might include for part 2 though !! 😊 yes, they’ll definitely be a bit older and i might do a couple timeskips to show how they’ve changed over the years, but i won’t say any more about what else i have in mind 🤫
