so i was going through ur nick tag and omg talk to me about protective!nick

protective!Nick is my jam and @my-sonshine does such a great job of those characterizations. I feel like I write more angry or insecure Nick, but I have opinions so let’s goooo

-I’ve touched on this before, but I really feel like if Nick had a romantic partner that didn’t indulge his tantrums, but that also gave him a lot of positive support he’d really bloom in a relationship. which of course means that he’d do anything to protect it

-that includes sometimes putting his foot down about his hours at work. he loves his job and he’ll never leave if they really need him, but if it’s possible for him to slip away on nights when he has plans with you he will. (later he’ll do boring paperwork for whoever on the squad covered for him)

-he’s very chivalrous, but not because he thinks you’re incapable. he genuinely enjoys the role of protector. so you rarely touch a door handle, always have to be on the side of him furthest from danger, he’ll run to pull the car up if you’re out of the city somewhere and it starts pouring rain unexpectedly. he’s very confident in the water (you’re not) so he always has an arm around you or is touching you if you’re in a pool or go to the beach

-he’s a little sensitive to loud surprise noises sometimes (hold over from lingering PTSD) but anytime he gets startled he instinctively pulls you out of the way of the perceived danger. when you meet his father he nudges you half behind him for most of the interaction. to Nick, leaving you in danger or ‘danger’ is the equivalent to having his belly exposed if he were a a dog. it does not really happen.

-he is not into club environments (too dark and loud) but if you want to go he prefers to go with you. he hates hearing stories of how someone grabbed you or tugged on your hand to try to get you to dance with them. if he’s ever out with you he’s attached to your back the entire time. the look he’s giving guys that look over at you appreciatively could freeze ice. one time someone grabs you while he’s in the bathroom and he was thisclose to coming to blows when he saw the guy with his hand gripping you, mostly because the look on your face was genuinely startled. if you want I can write about that!

-although he’s no stranger to storming out during arguments, he hates when you do it, especially if it’s late at night. once he blocked the door so you couldn’t leave, which made you livid until you saw the scared look on his face. the idea of him being the cause of something to harm you is horrifying to him

-there’s definitely been a decent handful of moments when someone has catcalled you before they realized Nick was with you and him going, ‘what did you just say?’ as he makes a beeline to the guy. 

-he takes care of you when you’re sick, even if you don’t really need it. he hates seeing you not like yourself so he cooks you soup from scratch, grabs half the cold medicine in the store, and plies you with so much tea you have to pee every 10 minutes. you try to complain that he’s going overboard, but he won’t listen to you so you let him cuddle you.

-when you’re pregnant he is…on another level. he mellows quite a bit from the time you meet him to the time that you have your first child. he kind of regresses as soon as he finds out that you’re pregnant. he doesn’t let you carry anything, or lift anything and if any strange men even get within a 5 ft radius of you the hair on the back of his neck practically stands up. you indulge him because you understand why he’s being so protective.

-once you fainted when you guys were on a trip visiting your best friend and he almost had a heart attack. your best friend is a nurse so you didn’t need to go to the hospital or anything-it was a combination of jet lag and low blood sugar-but it didn’t matter to Nick. for weeks he was worried there was something really wrong with you so he spent half of his nights just watching you sleep

-Nick is like the BEST person to cry on the shoulder of. he wraps you up so tightly in his arms, soothing you with little noises and running a hand down your back. his arms are so strong and warm and he’s solid. you always feel safe in his arms
