I can't stress enough what a pleasure it was to work with the super talented Ryan Ferrier <3

Companion Peace
The thing about making comics is that a fair amount of projects never quite take off or see themselves run their lifetime as an actual thing. Which is totally cool, and like, of course. I produce a fraction of what I actually come up with. They can’t all be winners or fleshed out enough to work on. Most of them can’t really be anything. And sometimes you see something through, give it your best but it just doesn’t stick. And that’s totally cool too. The important part is that you learn from it and grow and do the next thing better.
Companion, as you’ll see above, is one of those projects that made it to the pitch stage, was sent out to a bunch of folks, but just never really found a home despite how proud we are of the pitch and the story thus far.
Started back in December, 2011, Companion was intended as a five issue mini-series, written by me, with art from the super talented Elizabeth Beals (@ElizabethBeals). Companion is a story about a young man and his dog, who dodge a mandatory draft during a war in the near future, living in isolation in the Rocky Mountains for a year. Once the ruckus dies down, Noah and Sam find the country in total chaos, packs of savages, all that fun stuff. Companion tells their story as the two of them begin voyaging across the country to a rumored sanctuary.
Elizabeth Beals is/was the artist on this project, and her work is just awesome. What I liked a lot about Elizabeth’s work here is the juxtaposition of the light, loving boy-and-his-dog story which very quickly turns into a post-apocalyptic Mad Max type survival style. Her style brings that all down to a real level while beautifully illustrating the innocence of the main characters Noah (human) and Sam (dog), and the actual landscape of the environment. Working with Elizabeth was a wonderful experience, and please do check out her work frequently, she’s doing incredible, beautiful stuff.
Anyways, sometimes you have to tuck a story in and let it rest comfortably. Although Companion is really close to my heart, and Elizabeth and I are sad to see it go, we’re both really proud of the work and it would be a crime not to share it. So what you see above is the rest of the pitch, including the full story breakdown in case you wanted to see where it was all going to go. Enjoy.
*Also, my tumblr template is being a huge turd and won’t expand the images to their full size. If you’re having trouble reading the pages and want to see the embiggenized versions, just open the image link in a new window. It sucks, I’m sorry. Looking at a new theme.
