Roland kept his gaze fixed on Lara, but her face remained impenetrable. How easily she read him, as if he were an open book, and how effortlessly she seemed to maintain her composure.

She lightly, almost weightlessly, touched his chin, making him shiver.

"It's a slippery slope, Roland. Don’t go there." Her voice was steady. She knew. She knew everything. "You latch onto one thought, and others start clinging to you. 'If things had been this way, that wouldn’t have happened. And this wouldn't have happened, and that.' Why? It's easy to fall into that abyss."

Roland grinned foolishly, tracing her figure with his eyes in the dim light. It was true. His emotions were hard to control when it came to her.
