HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 21

BDoubleO100 x Stand Still, Stay Silent

A drawing of Minecraft youtuber BDoubleO100 standing in a clearing in a forest. He has dirt on his shirt and his face and is wiping sweat from his brow, looking proud of himself. On his shoulders is a cape made of moss. The forest is blue and green with yellow sunlight peaking through. The trees are in silhouette and painted in an watercolor-like style.

For Bdubs I chose the webcomic Stand Still, Stay Silent!

I chose this comic for BDubs because this comic takes place mostly in forested wilderness and has some of the most beautifully painted backgrounds I have ever seen in anything. I'm sure I don't need to explain why I wanted to represent BDubs with that.

I love the way this one turned out and I put a lot of effort into it, but it pales in comparison to how skillfully Minna Sundberg plays with light and shadow to make textured, atmospheric settings for her story.

While the comic is very beautiful, it is a post-apocalyptic story and does feature some disturbing imagery so discretion is advised.

To learn more about Stand Still, Stay Silent continue below the cut.

(Gamers Outreach, you know what to do!)

Stand Still, Stay Silent is a story which takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Scandanavia. The comic heavily draws from Scandanavian mythology.

The story opens with the world succumbing to a strange pandemic. A century later, humans hide in reinforced settlements to protect them from the "silent world" - the wilderness outside their settlements, which is home to plague infected creatures.

The story follows a misfit group of humans as they explore this wilderness to gain a deeper understanding of their hazardous world. Also the art is absolutely gorgeous.

Style references:

One of the characters from the comic looking shocked. He is dressed in black and standing in a mossy forest with dappled light in his blonde hair. He is saying "I...I’m going to try something."

Just your average stunning panel from this comic.

Two characters standing on the shore of a lake, speaking to each other. Wind is blowing their hair and cloaks while a fire burns on the lake in the distance. The forest is in shadow with dark blue trees and the fire is casting a light orange glow.

The wilderness in this story is as much a character as the characters themselves.

The words “Stand Still Stay Silent” in a faded hand drawn black font. Between “Stand Still” and “Stay Silent” is a symbol that looks like a 6 pointed star made out of diamond shapes. I suspect this is probably a recognizable pattern in Scandanavia but I am not Scandanavian so I don’t know. The text and symbol are on a white background.

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 18

JoeHillsTSD x Where the Sidewalk Ends

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 18

For Joe Hills I chose Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein!

I loved this book along with A Light in the Attic when I was a kid. It was one of my earliest exposures to poetry and since Joe is a poet himself, I thought this would suit them well!

In addition to doing a drawing for Joe, I also tried my hand at an original Joe Hills poem in the style of Silverstein. Writing poetry is pretty far outside of my usual wheelhouse, so I hope it turned out suitably Silverstein-esque! I'm proud of it regardless. :)

Here is the text of the poem:

-

JOE HILLS

A puppet is Juppet

A felt little guy

That felt is swell

And svelte

And blue as the sky.

But try as I might

I can't help but think

All that felt

Must swelt

In a Nashville July!

(Happy Hermitcraft stream weekend! A fine weekend to donate to Gamer's Outreach)

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a 1970s book of poetry by Shel Silverstein. Each poem is accompanied by a whimsical ink drawing also done by Silverstein.

The poetry is fantastical and imaginative, often written from a child-like perspective. Though the poetry sometimes touches on darker themes, it does so from a thoughtful place and the collection is enjoyable for people of all ages.

Even if you aren't someone who likes poetry, I highly recommend picking up Where the Sidewalk Ends or A Light in the Attic. They are both wonderful.

Style references:

An ink drawing of 3 child trapeze artists. The child at the bottom is hanging by their feet on a trapeze bar, which is in turn hanging from the big toes of a girl with long hair, who is holding onto the calves of the third child who is tied up in a rope and is holding a second trapeze bar under their nose. Beside them is a poem which I wrote out in the post below this image.

Every poem in the book has a cute drawing to accompany it. Here is the poem from the above image:

THE ACROBATS

I'll swing

By my ankles,

She'll cling

To your knees

As you hang

By your nose

From a high-up

Trapeze.

But just one thing, please,

As we float through the breeze-

Don't sneeze.

An ink drawing of two children at the edge of a cliff, looking down over the edge. The cliff is actually the end of a sidewalk leading out from a city in the distance. Behind the kids is a dog trying not to fall through a hole in the sidewalk-cliff. Behind the dog is a sign that says 'EDGE KEEP OFF!'

The illustrations for Where the Sidewalk Ends are whimsical with sparse, stippled shading and cartoonish characters

An ink drawing of a child struggling because their clothes are on incorrectly. They are wearing gloves as socks, a shirt as their pants, pants as a shirt, and they have underwear on their head. The underwear is covering their eyes and they seem to be frowning in concentration as they try to readjust their outfit.

The lineart of these drawings is thick and a little messy but still easily readable even when the subject of the drawings is unusual (which is pretty much all of them)

Day 18: Joe Hills

Day 18: Joe Hills

Here's Joe Hills, or really its a jhost and a juppet! I imagine that he'd be a sort of in-game hint guide, where he could give you hints on where to go next or when you can find hidden/secret items. However, they would all be in the form of riddles and poems! >:)

HERMIT A DAY MAY - DAY 22

Iskall85 x Adventure Time

Minecraft youtuber Iskall85 in the style of Adventure Time. He is running across a field towards you with an axe and it looks like he is having fun. Above him is his name in a red font that looks like its made of stone with a sword through the 85.

For Iskall I chose Adventure Time! Iskall brings a lot of fun, mischievous energy to the server which I think matches the tone of the show well. Plus, he famously created the dungeon looting game Vault Hunters and what do adventurers do if not break into dungeons for sweet loot?

I had a lot of fun with his pose and he is absolutely gonna get you with that axe. Start running!

To learn more about Adventure Time and see my style references, head below the cut.

(Donating to Gamers Outreach as well would be seriously mathematical of you.)

Adventure Time is a fantasy/adventure cartoon from 2010. The show follows a boy named Finn the Human and his adoptive brother, Jake the Dog, who is a talking dog with some shapeshifting abilities (he can change size and shape but stays recognizably Jake). The two go on adventures across the Land of Ooo in their quest to be radical adventuring heroes.

During their adventures they befriend people from the Candy Kingdon (they are people made out of candy), hang out with a Vampire Queen, and save princesses from kingdoms all across the land that are routinely kidnapped by the seemingly villainous but often fairly harmless Ice King (he is doing his best).

It is hard to describe this show to someone who hasn't seen it. The show is colorful and wacky, and the storylines are perpetually yes and-ing themselves so the boys end up in a lot of whimsical, often downright surreal, scenarios. The episodes are usually light-hearted, but there is a deeper, serious premise underneath that is slowly revealed as the show goes on, which I think takes the whole cartoon to another level. If you haven't seen it, and you like weird, funny stuff, go watch it!

Also pinging @hermitadaymay in case the tags decide not to work again.

Style references:

A yellow dog and a boy wearing a hat that makes him look like he has polar bear ears are sitting next to each other. The dog has his arm around the boys shoulders and seems to be talking.

Finn and Jake

The boy and the dog are standing on what looks to be an iceberg looking shocked. The boy, Finn, looks very surprised and the dog, Jake, looks delighted. Around them are the ocean and sparkly stars. They both have noodly looking arms.

The characters on the show have wiggly noodle limbs

The words Adventure Time in a red serif font that looks like its made out of stone. A sword with a golden handle is piercing through the word Time. The title is on a white background.
