Abalone shell has an iridescent sheen on its inner surface. The sheen results from light reflecting off numerous oriented microscopic slabs of aragonite which are bound together by a special protein. This beautiful but thin, soft, fragile material is often shaped and inlaid into other materials such as wood and silver.
