“How about we end off with something easy?” you say “let’s write your name” Zack picks up the pencil in front of him

“Zuh,” he says out loud as he writes a Z down on the paper in front of him “ah...cuh...done!” he says, proud of himself

“Not quite...” you sweatdrop

“Hehhh??? What do you mean? That's how you spell my name!”

“Remember how earlier I mentioned there are two different ‘cuh’s that often sound similar”

“oh...I remember now, mhm” he says. Unfortunately for Zack, you didn't miss the hesitation in his voice, so you asked the one question he was hoping you wouldn't ask:

“What’s the difference then”

‘Shit balls’ Zack thinks to himself “ummmmm, I- ah, um” you giggle “what are you giggling about?” Zack grumbles

“Do you want me to tell you?” Zack isn't looking at you, but he can hear the smirk in your voice

“I mean, sure, if you want to, but just know, I would tell you what it means, but I don't feel like telling you and because I'm such an amazing boyfriend, I'm going to let you say it,” he says. Meanwhile, poor you are trying so hard not to laugh

“Alright then” you clear your throat “there’s a curly ‘cuh’ and a kicking ‘kuh’”

“Yep, exactly that”

“And they are often put next to each other to create a ‘ck’ sound” you explain

“You're just taking the words out my mouth” Zack agrees

“So why don't you apply that to the end of your name?” you suggest. Zack picks up the pencil once more

“Zuh...ah...curly cuh and kicking kuh” Zack looks to you to see if he did it right

“Well done! You did it!” you smile. Zack grins. His grin is so big your worry his face might fall off “now, why don't we do a slightly trickier one” Zack’s grin immediately falls

“What?” you start laughing hysterically

“What?! Another one?! But you said this would be the last one!”

“Don't worry, I was only joking” you say in between laughs. Zack scowls

“That wasn't a very funny joke”

Yes! My requests are open. I decided to split this into 2 parts, one about teaching him how to read and the other teaching him how to write. The first part is teaching him how to read. “Ugh! I don't wanna read anymore, it's too hard” Zack complains. In front of him is an open book

“Awww, come on, you can do it, I know you can. And whenever you're having trouble reading, I'm right here to help” you smile. Zack grumbles something under his breath that you can't quite catch then continues reading

“T-he p-prince-ss” Zack starts

“Remember when we see ‘t’ and ‘h’ next to each other it creates a ‘th’ sound” you remind him

“The p-princess lad- no- laid d-d-down on t-he- wait- the bed” he looks to you to see if he's doing it right, you give him a thumbs up and an encouraging smile, Zack looked back down to the book and continued to read

“The pri-n-cess tri-ed to...sle-ep”

“When two ‘e’s are next to each other, it makes an ‘ee’ sound, remember?” you calmly remind him

“T-he prin-cess...the pri-ncess trie-d to sleep”

“Yep! You’re doing great, keep going!”

“But some-th-ing un-der a-ll...the...mat-mat-mattre...matt...”

“Mattresses”

“Und-er all t-he- no- the mattress-es was k-keep-ing her awake” Zack turns the page

“Should I keep going?” he asks you

“Yes! You're doing really well”

“Oh, I was hoping I could stop reading,” he says disappointedly

“Once you finish this book we can stop”

“But I wanna stop now” he complains

“There's no point in stopping now, we're near the end” Zack grumbles but goes back to reading aloud

“In the m-m-morn-ing, wh-when the p-prin-cess w-went down for br-br-break-fast, t-he...no...the p-prince an-d the k-k-ing ask-ed the pr-pr-incess if sh-e s-slept w-w-ell and the p-princ-ess repl-ied with ‘n-no, there w-was s-ome-th-ing under o-one of t-he...the matt-re-sses a-an-d I cou...cou...”

“Couldn’t”

“Couldn-’t g-get to slee-p’. The pri-nce was ha-ppy, he f-fin-ally fou-found a prin-cess. So t-he...the next d-day h-he ma-rri-ed the p-princ-ess and th-ey liv-ed hap-pily eve-r”

“When ‘e’ and ‘r’ are next to each other, what sound do they make?”

“Re”

“Yep! Now try the end line again”

“An-d they li-v-ed happ-ily ever a-aft-er. The end...what a weird story” you laugh

“Kids books are always weird. But they're easy to read”

“I guess”

“Now, how about a beer?” (I live in England and the legal age to drink alcohol is 18)
