exactlyyyy and it goes a step further: the clothing shift represents a shift in mentality. traditional clothing = traditional idea of people as a 'cog in a machine', individual suffering is justified for the sake of social harmony. this is the main evil in the jjk society, the same reason they keep sending kids to fight the vilest curses of humanity, the same reason the wheel keeps turning regardless of who dies (haibara, amanai etc.) the same thing that pushed geto into finding a way out, the same mentality that yuuji starts with.
modern (daresay western) clothing = rejection of this traditional idea. the people who've broken off with tradition now live for themselves, be that maki or toji after they left the zenins, kamo after the he was ousted, gojo etc. this isn't a selfish idea, its more like self-prioritisation and self love.
that's the point of the series, that each individual is worthy and exists beyond their traditionally thought of "value"
idk if anyone's ever mentioned this, but it's interesting how clothing is used in jjk, especially the clans.
roughly, you can divide clan members as traditional if they wear only traditional outfits and radical if they wear casuals.
take the zenins, for example. naobito, naoya and the rest of the household are never seen not wearing traditional. on the other hand, you have toji, maki and megumi - people who rejected the zenins - wearing casuals. mai is more complicated in that she sees herself more as bound in servitude to the zenins than as part of the family.
noritoshi kamo wears traditional, probably because he sees himself as a member and wants his mother to be accepted as a member.
for me, gojo is the most remarkable here. we only see him once wearing traditional: as a toddler in his household.
around the age of 12, he has already switched to casuals. he understood pretty early that the jujutsu society's traditions are pretty fucked up.
from there on, we have never seen the man in traditionals. he knows well that jujutsu society needs an upheaval, and it starts with the youth.
innocence
well damn now I want to know your interpretation of gojo bc i also think everyone misunderstands him
Thanks for the ask @chiarrara !
I love these and decided to quickly get into it since we're waiting for the finale:)
Without diving into a 3,000-word tangent, I think two major points of mischaracterization that personally get to me are: a) people assign complete victimhood to him, and b) people really underestimate how important Geto was to him (in any capacity—lover, friend, whatever).
I think Gojo has been dealt both the best and the worst cards in the history of Jujutsu society, and he recognizes those cards. He understands his situation and is doing a damn good job of playing them.
Because of that, Gojo is sometimes the architect of his own situation. His isolation is self-imposed after Geto left. His desire to draw boundaries between himself and everyone else is not just a response to losing Geto but also a recognition that he has to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals.
He has agency. He knows what to do. That doesn't minimize the tragedy of his situation, but when we reduce him to a small, helpless figure, we erase that crucial part of him.
I think the reason for this misconception in the fandom is, ironically, Geto. His question, "Are you Gojo Satoru because you're the strongest? Or are you the strongest because you're Gojo Satoru?" made it seem like there was an answer to find when there is not.
Gojo is the Six Eyes. Gojo is the strongest. Asking for Gojo without the Six Eyes is impossible—he’d be a completely different person. Plus, he's damn good at being the strongest. He loves being the strongest and totally gets off on it (yes, Nanami was right. They are also friendly that's why he said it to his face. Nanami doesn't hate Gojo.)
The question was never meant to have an answer. Geto was basically saying to Gojo in that moment: admit to yourself who you are. You have the power to change things.
Everyone knew Gojo was the strongest, while Gojo thought in his youth that he's just out there having fun with his bestie. That was one of the problems with young Gojo, so by leaving and asking him that, Geto sort of opened his eyes to his responsibility and his place in the system.
But the audience kept waiting for an answer.
I think seeing that Gojo is a character who happily manipulates the system, places himself in constant isolation, doesn't seek friendships or connections, and allows himself to be used is hard to watch, but it's no less true.
And the another clue to that is also so many iconic Gojo phrases are ones that can be said about himself too.
"You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved"—Gojo said this after losing Geto, and the usual interpretation is that he's sad because he couldn't save Geto, which is true. But I think the fuller interpretation is that Gojo also doesn't want to be saved.
He accepted his role. There's a whole other conversation about whether that worked out (I'd say 50/50), but this is who he is.
I see a lot of people up in arms defending him when characters in the universe don't have anything good to say about him, but like: a) no one knows this man! b) he's a hard person to deal with (notoriously, only one person ever managed to).
Lets chill.
Gojo knows what he's doing. He may be not fine but he is fine with being not fine. And if anything, he only ever needed one person's approval in his life, and now they're at the airport together (hopefully forever).
