kuroo’s always hated wedding receptions, they were so tacky and noisy and all the things annoying with social gatherings, but now — now that he’s standing in the middle of his own wedding’s reception — he’s starting to think that they might not be so bad after all.

the speeches are over, cake’s been cut, and now everyone he loves and cares for are sharing the dance floor as they come and congratulate him for a beautiful ceremony.

and in the busy dance floor crowd he sees you, his partner through all this, and he pulls away from the conversation he’s having to take you away from yours.

because it is yours and his wedding after all, and that means he can have you for as long as tonight lasts.

so he taps on your shoulder, then you turn, and you smile when you see that it’s him, and he smiles when he sees that it’s you.

“may i have this dance?” he asks you, mocking the cliché term, and there’s a bubble in his chest as he hears you laugh.

you take his hand and it fits as well as a glove, and there’s a certain way the ring on your finger grazes his palm that gets him feeling butterflies.

“i don’t know,” you grin, your hand on his as his other sits comfortably on your waist.

you raise a brow, “do you have a trust fund?”

kuroo’s chest rises with his chuckle, his black tux not as tidy as it was before the ceremony, but you’re still convinced that he puts the eye in eye candy.

music plays in the background, a fun hymn that isn’t as classy for the waltz, but a slow tune deserving enough for a slow dance that puts you and (your newly announced) husband in a satisfying closeness.

it wasn’t even three hours ago that he stopped being your fiancé to be your husband, but kuroo feels like he’s already been loving you permanently like this for forever.

so he points it out, swaying to the beat of the music, surrounded by everyone else in the dim lit dance floor.

“we’re dancing at our wedding, you know.” he tells you, grinning down at you as you dance with him.

and you laugh, “oh, is this what that was?”

“i thought it was a really pretentious dinner party.” you follow, laughing as you say it, and kuroo can’t help but note how charming you are.

“you missed the entire ceremony where they pronounced us married?” he asks you, playing along with your bit.

and you shrug, “i must’ve slept through it.”

“well then,” kuroo smiles, “may i be the 14th person tonight to tell you how amazing you look?”

and you reply, matching his expression, “15th actually.”

“your nephew told me he’d steal me away from you the second he turns 18.” you continue, and you fake a scoff.

kuroo rolls his eyes, “i’ll fight him.”

so you laugh, “he’s just a kid.”

and he grins back at you, “that makes him easier to defeat.”

you laugh and he laughs too, and a few more minutes pass by, no words being exchanged by either of you, just sweet swaying through music as you’re both passed with lovely ‘congratulations’ by a swindle of your friends.

and it’s a lot to take in — cause the congratulations the two of you are being given are because legally, you’re officially married to each other now.

so kuroo asks you, “any regrets?”

“no regrets.” you tell him immediately.

and kuroo raises a brow, he jokes, “i still don’t have a trust fund.”

and you joke with him, “one regret.”

you swoon when he laughs, and you’re sure that it’s your favorite sound in the world, and this time, you ask kuroo, “do you have regrets?”

and he nods, “i regret giving bokuto the mic.”

“hey, i liked bokuto’s speech.” you tell him, laughing as you remember how loud and long it was, and you wonder if he’s still in the crowds with akaashi and atsumu somewhere in the business of it all.

kuroo snorts, “he was crying.”

you smile, “it’s ‘cause he loves us.”

kuroo sways you again, it’s almost midnight now, the thrill of the night is dying down, and with it, a shadow of realization comes to you, and you realize how marriage is both exciting and terrifying at the same time.

and you wish that it’d just stay like this - dancing with kuroo at your wedding reception.

so you look up at him, and he looks down to you, and his expression asks you what’s wrong, and you’re sure that there’s nothing to be worried about.

“don’t ever divorce me.” you tell him, gentle as if you’re bashful about it, but your worries ease when he meets you with his charming grin.

kuroo smiles, nodding as he does, “never.”

he’s honest as he says that, he’s completely sure of it —

because tomorrow when he wakes up next to you as your husband and not fiancé, nothing will change except for that title.

he will still love you the way he did yesterday, he will still love you the way he’ll do next tuesday. time doesn’t exist in the bubble he’s made for you, and in there, there isn’t a reality where he stops loving you.

in the rain, in the sun, at noon, or at midnight, in two years or in ten — you will be loved, and it’ll be kuroo who gets the privilege of doing so.

so he sways you, just before kissing you, and he says, “thank you for marrying me.”
