my parents: why are you smiling at your phone? who are you texting?
me in the middle of a 50k word fanfic about my otp that’s the exact same tropes as the last 5 i’ve read except this time they’re in a coffee shop:
Thsi is a great reminder as to why we should download fics and any other piece of fanwork we enjoy because some people just cannot leave good things be
And also a reminder to all authors have a copy of all their writing saved. Just in case.
So Ao3 is being attacked now, and I've recently learned of a string of attacks on the general writing community, esp the ones present online.
I won't stop writing, but I do want anyone who may see this message to please consider what that might mean for them. In the big, long-term, but also in the smaller details.
An attack like this means people are trying to limit information and opportunities - they are not trying to protect children like they say they are. If they were, they'd encourage safety online, they may enforce rules about warnings when writing about things they say are "dangerous." This is them trying to cleanse the web of anything they see as wrong, even if it's just that they disagree with it.
It won't only affect children, and not only in their childhoods. It will affect adults online, writers who publish their works in libraries, and anybody who may want to learn about the past, or about other people.
They are burning books in the way so many have before, but because it's online, they can do so without the same public outcry, and to a much larger degree than I can recall seeing before.
The works they are trying to destroy will be gone. Not hidden - gone. The only copies you could find will be permanently purged from existence if they have their way, whatever they contain.
We all know that when a group starts burning books, they've already grown powerful. I don't think we should let them gain that power over us.
Blasting 'Come back... Be here' by Taylor Swift in my ears for a very special someone (Ao3)
All right, who THE FUCK was responsible for the ddos attack on Ao3?
