Burning Red

There was no sound, not even the faintest shuffle, apart from his and James’ breaths. Sirius couldn’t see his own feet, owing to the Invisibility Cloak covering him and his friend. He could feel James right behind him though, their steps slow, trying to keep the Cloak on both of them as they walked. It was getting harder to fit two people under it now as compared to their first year. They had both grown a lot since then, both now in their sixth year.

It was nearly 2 in the morning, and they had just finished bringing Remus back to the castle after a particularly rough transformation. For some reason, this month had been harder than ever before, and after they had settled him into his bed with a million blankets, they left Peter with him while they grabbed the Invisibility Cloak and decided to run down to the kitchens and get him as much stuff with chocolate as possible.

image

It hurt.

As hard as you tried to push the thought away, to push the idea of your soulmates away, it still hurt. It was one thing to think that they didn’t want you, it was another to hear the words come out of Hoseok’s mouth. To be called selfish, hurtful. You couldn’t stay there, stay near him. Any of them.

So you ran.

Only A Warning // Finan

You walk in between two men. Two men you do not know but hope will lead you to the man you wish to see.

With the hood of your cape covering your face, you keep your gaze trained on the ground below you, placing one foot in front of the other. You do not wish for your identity to be seen or revealed as of yet, but the chattering among-st and around you help keeps your racing heart at bay. What you were doing was not only incredibly dangerous, but there was no guarantee that the man you sought for would remember or accept you.

If he did not, well, then, you were as good as dead.

The footsteps of the men on either side of you halt, alerting you that they have stopped, and coming to a stop yourself, you allow the tip of your chin to raise just a little. Enough so that you can see clearly before yourself, and your eyes settle upon two large doors. Doors that you guess lead into the hall and main building of Coccham and will lead you to the man you seek.

“We are here,” one of the men call out, his Irish accent thick.

“I wish to see Uhtred,” you speak, “only then will raise my hood.”

There’s a pause, and then, you hear the squeak of the large doors, signaling them opening. Hope and fears floods you at the same time, and you instinctively clutch your dress beneath your cloak tightly. You take a step forward when you hear the two men do the same, anticipating what is next to come.

“What is this?”

The voice belongs to Uhtred. Even after all these years, you recognize him purely by his tone. His voice is deeper than it had been when you’d known him, but then again, that had been more than ten years ago.

“Um, she,” you figure the men, the other one, not the Irish-man, gestures to you. “She wished to see you, Lord. Said that she could only speak to you, that only you could help her.”

“How am I meant to help a woman I can not even see?”

You are not oblivious to the order that has been given. So, with a sharp inhale, you raise your hands, slowly pulling back the large hood that had covered your identity and appearance to all eyes. Your hair falls across your shoulders as the hood is pulled back, and you slowly raise your head, keeping your gaze steady and forward. It is not long before you meet Uhtred’s eyes, and the fear that had flood you this entire trip disappears the minute you see his lips part and his eyes flood with recognition.

“Y/N,” he whispers, pushing himself up to his feet. You notice a woman next to him, and finally you are able to see, clearly and fully, the men who’d lead you hear.

“You know her, Lord?” The man on your right speaks, the Irish-man, as he eyes you slowly.

Meeting Uhtred’s eyes, you nod, speak for him; “I am his sister,” you explain, “his blood sister.”

The two men and the woman all, almost in sync, react with wide eyes and parted lips. But you are hardly able to focus on them before Uhtred is hastily pushing himself away from the table and around, reaching you within seconds. He wastes no time enveloping you in his arms, holding you tightly as you bury your head into the crook of his neck.

The last time you’d seen Uhtred was when he was still a boy. Before he’d been taken by the Danes. Uhtred was a man now, and a Lord apparently.

“What are you doing here?” Uhtred laughs, pulling back from the embrace but cupping either of your cheeks. “I’d thought you dead, long ago.”

Raising your hand, you touch Uhtred’s cheeks gently. “It is so good to see you,” you whisper, unable to fight back the tears that threaten to fall. “I worried about you every day since you were captured. When I heard our uncle bring up your name, I was more than relieved.”

“You have been with our uncle?” Uhtred questions, worry flooding his gaze. “This entire time?”

“There was no where else for me to go,” you explain, shrugging your shoulders. “After you were taken, uncle would not allow me to leave. I have been under his captivity this entire time.”

Uhtred’s lips parts, and then he glances back, at his two men, before returning his attention to you. He lets his arms fall, one hand falling on your lower back as he leads you to the dinner table, the table he’d been sat at moments before. He guides you to a seat, next to the woman you’d see before, and she greets you with a warm and bright smile.

“How did you escape him?” Uhtred asks, returning to his previous seat. His two men take a seat in front of you, leaning forward on the table, eager to hear your story.

“Our uncle has grown old, tired and weak. He is not as watchful as he used to be,” you explain, pausing to take a drink of water from the cup that had been placed in front of you. “I simply used his weaknesses against him. I’ve spent months searching for you, Uhtred. I am only so relieved to have finally found you.”

Uhtred smiles softly, “you can stay here. As long as you need.”

Fiddling with your hands, you glance down at your lap. “I would like to stay here, permanently,” you explain, voice quiet. “If allowed. With our uncle out there searching for me, I am afraid to go anywhere else.”

“Of course,” the woman next to you nods, pulling your eyes on her. “I am Gisela, Uhtred’s wife.”

Your eyes widen, meeting Uhtred’s eyes as you smile brightly. “You are married,” you laugh, enjoying the feeling of happiness that envelops you.

Laughing, Uhtred nods, leaning back in his seat. “And these are my friends, Sihtric,” he points to the shorter men of the two. In return, the boy smiles at you, offering you a nod. “And Finan.” It is the Irish-man you realize. As your eyes meet his, you can’t help the soft blush that grows on your cheeks as he sends you a smirk and a wink in greeting.

“Nice to meet you, Y/N,” he grins.

“You must be starving,” Gisela says, pulling your eyes back on her as she stands up. “I will fetch you some supper.”

You nod, a weight seemingly being lifted off of your shoulders.

“I missed you, Y/N,” Uhtred whispers, meeting your eyes. Leaning forward, he takes your hand in his own. “There was not a day I did not think of you.”

Eyes softening, you nod; “and I the same, Uhtred.”

-

You were accepted with open arms.

Life at Coccham became easy and natural rather quickly. You felt at home more than you ever had back at Bebbanburg with your uncle. Here, there was no threat upon your life. And here, you had the protection of Uhtred and his men.

Speaking of his men, they also accepted you with open arms. His closest friends, Sihtric and Finan, you rather enjoyed their company. They never failed to make you laugh, and you loved and appreciated their undying loyalty to your brother.

The latter, Finan, you especially became close to. And as the days went on, turning into weeks and then months, you were not unaware to the attraction you felt for him. He not only treated you right and respectively, he also attracted your attention in other ways. And if the longing looks and ever-so-slight touches were anything to go by, you figured Finan felt the same.

Of course, you were both hesitant to act upon them. Uhtred, since your reunion, was fiercely protective of you. He let you have your freedom, of course, since he was not unaware that you had spent much of your childhood and more as a captive. But, he was protective over you, there was no other way of explaining it. Gisela, someone you’d become quite close friends with, often teased him over it, to which Uhtred would roll his eyes and deny every word.

So, you kept your feelings for Finan at bay. Unspoken and quiet.

That was until that day. You’d been helping in the kitchen, prepping for dinner when Gisela had urged you to take a break. You’d been working hard all day, she professed, and thus, she could handle dinner quite fine on her own. You were hastily swept out of the kitchen, into the hall, and somehow right into the arms of Finan.

After nearly bumping into him and slipping, Finan caught you, steadying you on your own to feet.

The two of you were not opposed to close contact with one another, but you always kept a respectful distance, in fear that something should happen. As your gaze rose, and you met his eyes, you realized why the two of you had worked so hard to do so. It felt nearly impossible to deny your feelings for the man now, when he was so close.

“Uh, i-i’m sorry,” you stutter, pulling yourself from his arms. “I did not mean to-”

“You have done me no harm, Lady,” Finan interrupts softly, smiling at you politely. “I’m merely glad I was able to catch you before you fell and hurt yourself.”

Feeling your cheeks warm, you tuck a strand of loose hair behind your ear, glancing down at your feet. “Still,” you mumble, “I was not looking where I was going. I apologize.”

“No worries, Lady.”

“How many times must I tell you?” You smile softly, raising your head once more to meet his eyes. “Call me Y/N.”

“Of course, Lady,” Finan pauses, eyes clenching shut. “Uh, I mean, Y/N.”

Giggling softly to yourself, you shake your head. A moment of silence passes between the two of you, and it’s obvious one of you, if not both, should just walk away, forget this ever happened. But as you meet his eyes once more, you find that you cannot. And then suddenly, Finan’s lips are pressed against your own.

It only takes you a split second before you return the kiss, allowing your hands to run through his hair and downwards. Finan’s arms wrap around your waist in response, pulling you close as you curl your body into his. Every thought you’ve had about Finan that you have spent the past months hiding from him and everyone else, you pour into that kiss, desperate that he understands.

As you kiss Finan, you’re unaware of the approaching footsteps. The both of you are unaware until Uhtred’s voice calls out; “Finan, there you are. I have-”

You and Finan pull away from each other almost immediately. You bump into the wall behind you as you glance over at Uhtred apprehensively, hastily brushing back your hair that had become messed up during your kiss.

Uhtred’s face slowly falls as he processes what has just happened. And then he’s taking a step forward, his face twisting into an expression of anger.

“Yo-Your Lord, I did not mean-”

Finan is interrupted by Uhtred grabbing his from the collar of his armour, pressing him against the wall adjacent to you. You instantly push off the wall yourself, grabbing onto Uhtred’s shoulder and desperately pulling back on him. “Uhtred,” you cry, “he didn’t do anything! Please!”

“Be quiet,” Uhtred growls, sending you a warning look.

Shoulders falling, you step back, meeting Finan’s gaze along the way.

“You…” Uhtred growls, his tight grip on Finan shaking. “I was wondering how long it would take the two of you.”

You pause, confusion flooding you.

What?

Uhtred steps back, letting go of Finan who falls to his feet with wide eyes. Fixing his clothing, he watches Uhtred step back, the both of you greatly baffled as a bright grin falls on Uhtred’s lips.

“Anyone could see how you care for each other,” Uhtred grins, letting out a satisfied chuckle. “I only wanted to scare you a little to warn you,” he turns to Finan, “that if you ever hurt her, I will kill you.”

Uhtred turns then, heading back down the way he came. As he turns the corner, about to disappear from view, he waves at the two of you before leaving.

A moment of silence passes, your heart pounding against your chest.

“I thought I was a dead man then,” Finan breathes, shoulders falling.

“So did I.”
