Mean people

You know what I don't understand? How can people be so mean? I'm not just talking about bullies; I'm talking about average people who do or say crappy things without feeling a bit of remorse. They could treat waiters or waitresses like personal servants, snapping their fingers to get their attention or just being plain rude to them. They could leave a hateful comment on a video they don't like (ex. Rebecca Black's Friday) and feel so proud of it. They could cut people off on the highway, slam a door in people's faces, and I just can't wrap my head around that. If I do anything remotely rude, even if by accident, I feel bad about it. Even if a stranger does something by accident that pisses me off, I just can't treat them with contempt. I try to be polite and show some common courtesy, which apparently isn't so common anymore. Who teaches people to be so rude anyway? What makes these people think that this kind of disrespect is okay? Do their parents teach them this? Society? Their peers? Whatever the reason, I still can't understand why they don't feel some sort of guilt. Maybe I'll never know. I guess all I can do is try to be as courteous as possible 'cause I don't have the time or heart to be nasty.
