A Quick Guide To Making Friends In Fandom

For those who are nervous or shy and would like some tips/instructions:

Talk to people.

I understand that this is hard, but I promise you that the best way to make friends in fandom is to just... talk to people.

There's a lot of different ways to talk to people, a great way to get started is to reblog people's stuff and leave comments in the tag. Chat with the OP of the post or the person you reblogged it from, add in your own ideas! People really do notice people that regularly tag their posts with comments and stuff. Leave comments on stories on A03. Send people asks about their AUs and stuff!

2. No really, talk to people.

More than just leaving compliments, try to actually engage with the material. Ask the creator questions, suggest ideas, talk about your favorite part of an AU or something that it made you think of. Make connections and add depth to the universes being built!

If you want to do fanart for people, do fanart for people! Put yourself out there and start the interactions. That's how you get friends.

3. Post things

Making your own original posts, including stuff like fic reviews + fic rec lists, talking about something that you enjoyed, sharing work of your own, etc are all great ways to keep interacting with people. If you aren't someone that creates stuff, then find other ways to engage. Maybe you want to cut your favorite clips, or point people towards other people's work. Maybe you want to archive content and places to find it? Whatever it is, try to find ways to create your own little thing. It helps a lot.

4. Be nice, and consider the garden you're cultivating

One of the best ways to make friends in fandom is to just be kind to other people. This can take a lot of shapes and forms, but the biggest one is just... don't be a jackass. Don't send people hate or harassment, just block people that you don't like.

There's a lot of ways to consider a tumblr blog or other fandom space, but I've always been fond of considering them gardens. You can keep it simple, you can do some really fun complex stuff, it can be primarily for looking pretty or primarily for growing food. You can cultivate all sorts of stuff, you can even grow dangerous plants as long as you know what you're doing.

But much like a garden, you need to take care of any space you control. It's easy to get caught up in discourse, it's easy to get sucked into negative spaces. So you have to take some time to step back and consider the space that you're creating and what that says to other people.

Your space doesn't need to be designed for other people. It's for yourself above all else. But if you have giant hogweed running wild all over your garden, don't be surprised if people don't want to come in.

More importantly, if you find yourself constantly feeling like you're getting hurt/stressed out from your social spaces online, it's probably time to do some weeding. Once you've gotten your garden curated and safe for you, then you can look about inviting other people in.
