“why is she doing that?”

rin’s eyebrows are furrowed in confusion, his lips somewhat pouting as he doesn’t understand why his daughter, who was nine months old, is acting in such a way. he’s trying to rationalize it in his head; he possibly couldn’t have taught her to do such a gesture, and you surely wouldn’t have either, right? was he that terrible of a parent to have his little sunshine do that to him?

“hm? doing what, rinrin?”

“she’s sticking her tongue out at me,” he says, and he feels a bit dejected at the thought of his daughter resenting him. he looks at her, then back at you, “did you teach her that?” rin asks quietly as he gently rocked her back and forth in his arms. “because i didn’t.”

“oh.”

“oh?”

“rin,” you chuckle, clearly amused. this made your husband even more confused.

what was so funny?

as cute as your daughter is, he still minded the way she always stuck out her tongue at him. and rin, knowing himself, would’ve let it slide the first few times, often entertaining her by mirroring the expression, but she only ever seemed to do it to him and no one else. the baby, the angel that she is, never did that to you, to his family, or even to his older brother.

he was sure that sae taught her that, and the mere thought of it being true slightly annoyed rin.

“rin,” you start, “she got that from you, y’know?”

your husband is brought back to reality as he processes your words.

from him?

“from me?” he asks, glancing at his daughter, who giggled at him, leaning her chubby cheek on his chest. rin swore his heart melted on the spot, and that all problems had been cleared, though not quite . . .

“yes, you. we were looking at your baby album earlier, and most of your pictures were pictures of you sticking your tongue out at the camera, so i guess she’s mirroring you,” you told him, holding it together to not burst out laughing at his dumbfounded expression. “plus, she watched a highlight of your career video online. most of the clips were when you’re so engrossed in the match that you stick out your tongue, love.”

you shrug your shoulders, happily smiling toward your little girl. “it seems that someone’s copying her daddy, huh?”

“oh.”

a faint blush blooms on rin’s face, and he tries to hide it by turning away from you, though you’re just as quick to persuade him to face you once more. “you’re copying me, hm?” he says to her. “that’s cute.”

in turn, the little sunshine giggles, sticking out her tongue at him, her eyes squeezed shut as she places her small hands on either side of rin’s cheek.

“bleh!” she cheers.

rin sighs, a small smile appearing on his lips. “bleh,” he mirrors her.

of course, you managed to snap a photo of the undeniably cute scene. you smiled triumphantly at yourself as you took a good look at the two in your phone’s gallery. this would be a great addition to her baby album, you think, plus it’s so adorable to see her pick up one of rin’s mannerisms that he carried with him until adulthood.

it certainly was like father, like daughter.

ZHONGLI, at first, failed to notice it until he opened his eyes and turned your way.

It was just an argument, all couples do have one. All normal relationships have such situations, after all. Yet it was beyond him to see the band over the table, where you had just been moments ago, only to leave him to ponder with his thoughts all alone.

He quickly turns and follows you to wherever you might’ve gone, “love?” he calls out with a full voice? “Love?” And a broken one after that when he sees you on the bed, folding clothes on your own.

“Are you… leaving?” He hesitated, clearing his throat and prompting you to look up and meet his eyes.

He braces himself for your answer, brave enough to accept your answer, whatever it may be. He wouldn’t stop you—you have every right to leave, after all.

“What? No, of course not, what made you think-” then your gaze trails down to your fingers upon seeing the ring on his palm, instantly reaching out and taking it from him, “Oh-was that? I was only… I took it off because I had to wash my hands to fold the clothes.” You slowly explained, realizing the intention behind his question as you do so.

“Oh, beloved… I am never leaving you,” you stood up and he was the one who stepped forward and received you in his arms, wrapping you and him sighing out heavily once he felt your body against his.

XIAO felt the way his knees buckled as he zeroes into your hands, now holding onto the ring that was once wrapped around one of your fingers. That same ring that he had created out of the love from the depths of his heart, a ring that symbolized not only his feelings but also his pledge to never sever the bond you have.

"you're leaving for spain?"

despite your questioning tone, itoshi sae knows you well enough to know that your inquiry is actually a statement. he turns around, seeing you leaning against his doorframe. your arms are crossed, a neutral expression on your face as you meet his eyes.

he nods once, giving you the confirmation that you need. you merely hum quietly in response, silence ensuing as you continue to stare at one another. it feels like hours, but it couldn't have been more than a few seconds before sae opens his mouth to speak again.

"who told you?"

"rin."

"figures," sae scoffs. of course rin would go running to you. whenever a disagreement would take place between the two brothers, rin would go to you for support, knowing you were the only one who sae would listen to. a part of him is scared to hear what you have to say next, unsure of his own actions if you were to ask him to stay.

another part of him anxiously waits for you to speak, to ask (not beg, he knows you'd never beg) him to stay and wait a few years. to wait for the both of you to graduate before leaving for spain, where you'd continue your studies abroad and he'd be able to live out his dream with you by his side. but it never comes, and he can't ignore the dull ache in his chest when you look away, nodding softly before turning to leave.

"have a safe flight, sae."

you're gone before he can even think about responding, and he sits down on his bed as he realizes that a part of him— his heart— will always remain in japan.
