need you all to consider karen is the result of what would happen if mike and nancy dropped their own selves and started to conform, if nancy had let the dudes in hawkins post get to her head, if mike keeps holding onto what keeps him largely accepted rather than what keeps him real, if holly, one day, grew onto a safe-in-society woman like the one that raised her. karen had a dream, karen wanted a different life, karen wants a different life. but she's been more than at least 20 years having made the safe choice, the choice where she wakes up to the same man, to the same status, to the same house that she cleans and cooks in from day to night everyday for what she thinks is the rest of her life. but she doesn't - she doesn't want that for her kids. she wants nancy to lift her head and fight back, to slam her power onto every newspaper in indiana, and she craves mike's trust like she needs air, she wants him to tell her the truth, for all you know, she wants him to take the path that she didn't take, she wants him to take a step out of conformity.

and she's failing, when she takes things away from mike for rebelling not one year after picking him up from the back of an ambulance van, when she barged into nancy's room time after time deep into her 16 years of age rather than trusting nancy the way she wants nancy to trust her. when she tells mike to confide in her word-by-word but doesn't read the signs when he actually gives them. and they're all pretty apart, specially mike. 20 years and more into the same story, a mentality molds into that headspace. and karen has her moments. but she wants out, she almost went out, but there's something in the life she chose that she actually loves to the death, and that's her kids, so she stayed.

point is, karen's relationships with her children has a good amount of issues, but she doesn't want her kids' lives to be anything like hers. now, yes, karen could have certain ideas that could make mike being queer conflicting from her perspective, maybe scare her a fair amount. but, something in my gut says karen is a lot more scared about mike taking the life society already got molded for him and leaving himself behind. that karen is a lot more scared of not letting mike be who he is.

and maybe karen doesn't think she can fight for her own life anymore, but she'll fight for theirs. she'll fight for theirs.
