I feel like I'm being gaslighted with how many people are still denying the meaning of 保護者.

It doesn't mean guardian as in protector or bodyguard or watchdog.

It means guardian as in an adult that cares for a child in place of their parent.

Nowadays, even biological parents are referred to as hogosha, because no one wants to assume.

Hogosha means parent or parental figure.

Regardless of the setting of a story, if a modern person speaking modern Japanese refers to a character in that story as a hogosha, that person means parent or parental figure, because that is the meaning of the word.

You don't even have to take my word for it! Go ask a native Japanese speaker! They will say the same thing!

(By native Japanese speaker, I do not mean someone studying Japanese who has access to online dictionaries. I mean a native speaker of Japanese.)

This doesn't make SessRin less canon in Yashahime. This doesn't mean you have to abandon your headcanon.

It means that Rumiko, when she was drawing the manga, thought of Sesshōmaru as a parental figure to Rin. No more, no less.
