Probably because he couldn't care less about Cinderella or was more interested in making his current wife happy than taking care of his own daughter.

I’ve always wondered in Charles Perrault’s original Cinderella story (Because the Grimms published it later) where Cinderella’s father is ALIVE. What kind of person allows his current wife to abuse her own in front of him? Not only does she let them treat her worse than a maid (because at least one maid receives even minimal pay and Cindy does not) but she treats her stepdaughters better, who enjoy numerous dresses and luxurious rooms contrary to Cindy’s rags and basement. . Don’t you think we should say evil father instead of just evil stepmother and evil stepsisters?

This white robe à la française was spotted briefly on an extra in the opening scene of Disney’s 2017 live action Beauty and the Beast.  Most recently it was spotted again in the 2020 first season of Bridgerton on one of Queen Charlotte’s ladies in waiting.
