In the original strip, Zan asks Kirby to come up with a nickname for her. He takes her full title/name, general Zan Partizanne (sanmakan no zan parurutizaanu) and shortens it to “sanma” (mackerel).

When I was translating this, I was debating how to do the pun. I was thinking maybe zander, which is a fish that looks a bit like the one in the panel, and also sounds like a horrible nickname to give to somebody but unfortunately I don’t think “zander” is a well-known fish name, and wouldn’t have worked. @rosakikoz​ ended up suggestion “salmon partizanne” to me which, while longer, gets the point across way better.

Also humorously I’ve seen some people online use the same pun, misspelling 三魔館 “sanmakan” (the generals) as サンマ缶 also “sanmakan” (canned mackerel)
