From A Queer Elder
From a queer elder…
Being queer isn’t supposed to be palatable to non-queers.
We don’t tick little squares on a checklist of “queer enough”, we obliterate the checklist.
We defy societal norms that say our bodies, families or relationships have to look a certain way.
Queer is the insult we took away from oppressors. We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.
The people who hate us will hate us regardless of how palatable we make ourselves.
Stop licking fascist boots by policing queers who are queer in different ways than you.
Oh, someone is bi/pan trans lesbian with he/him pronouns? So what! They’re welcome on the rainbow. Their identity doesn’t have to make sense to you, it has to make sense to them.
Our identities don’t make sense to non-queers. They see us as unnatural and disgusting, so why are you turning around and crapping that same garbage out at your own community??
Once you drive the visible queers underground, the same people who hate us all will target you next. Nobody will defend you because you drove away everybody who would have.
Enough already!
— sincerely, an old queer.

Everytime I see “there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism” as a response to criticisms of people buying Hogwarts Legacy I take a moment to mourn the loss of nuance.
Like yes the above statement is true, but some types of consumption are more ethical than others and context matters. Buying a game based in an antisemitic premise that will line the pockets of a transphobe who has been cited as a source in and actively promotes anti-trans legislature is not the same thing as buying fast fashion because you can’t afford anything better or that’s the only place that sells your size. People need to stop pretending all participation in capitalism is equal.
You can buy Hogwarts Legacy, that much is your right. However, I am also within my right to criticize you and your lack of care for the communities harmed by this game and the author of its universe.

i see your “body swap au where Enid dresses up in all her colourful clothes as Wednesday” and I respect it
but what if, hear me out, Enid experiences colour the way Wednesday does?
it hurts her eyes to look at her own side of the room. she gets migraines walking through all the bright shops in Jericho. and when her arm brushes against Wednesday’s, it feels as though he skin is being seared off.
Wednesday, for her part sees no need to change out of Enid’s colourful clothing, in fact, it’s kind of nice to be able to wear something of Enid’s without taking antihistamines.
when Enid mentions that it feels as though she has just pressed against silver, Wednesday opens a chest stocked full of Epipens and allergy tablets. Shoves a few of each into Enid’s hands and gets back to the task at hand.
Enid is left to realise that Wednesday was not kidding, even a little bit, about being allergic to colour.
