You reblogged a list so I came running. I’m thinking…..98 and Steve

Roll up, roll up, come get your friends-to-lovers! Friends-to-lovers, get ’em while they’re still friends because once they’re lovers, they’re lovers!

98. “let’s just kiss to see what it’s like” then pulling away, lingering for a moment, then going in for the second kiss

Warnings: Alcohol mentions, several hundred words of yearning and softness beneath the stars

You Reblogged A List So I Came Running. Im Thinking..98 And Steve

It was an offhand comment from Robin, a thought that never would have been voiced if it wasn’t for the cheap beer you’d all been sharing all night.

“You two-” She gestured between you and Steve with her beer bottle. “-are dating each other without dating each other. You’re…you’re like a couple that just doesn’t kiss. You just gotta kiss!”

Eddie was chuckling into his bottle and Nancy’s lips were twisting with the urge to smile. Beside you, Steve was shaking his head, but he was chuckling too. His arm, draped around your shoulders, squeezed you, but the gesture that had always been a comfort seemed suddenly wrong after what Robin had said. For perhaps the first time, you shrugged away from his touch and stood up.

“Excuse me,” you mumbled, already rounding the sofa and heading for the back door, the need for fresh air suddenly urgent.

Steve called your name, his fingertips brushing your forearm as he tried and failed to stop you. He watched you disappear outside and sighed, dragging a hand down his face.

“Nice one, Robin,” he said in exasperation, no real venom behind the words as he stood to follow you.

He found you exactly where he knew you would be, sitting on the swinging bench at the end of Robin’s porch, head tipped back to look up at the stars. You didn’t move as he joined you, his added weight making the wood creak ominously. He found himself mirroring your pose, searching the sky for words.

In all of his years as your best friend, he’d never once not known what to say to you before.

His shoulder bumping yours was gentle and made the swing rock as though a breeze had shifted it. Turning your head, you saw that he was still determinedly looking up, the tiniest corner of a smile visible and his hand flipped palm up on his knee. An invitation.

Your fingers twitched with the instinct to take his hand, but Robin’s words echoing in your head stopped you. Most people didn’t hold hands with their best friend, not when there was no one else around…not when their best friend was Steve. When a few moments had passed without you taking his hand, he let his head loll onto his shoulder to look at you. He didn’t have to say anything, his big brown eyes widening to silently ask what you were thinking. You took a deep breath and found that you couldn’t look at him; your eyes returned to the night sky before you spoke.

“Is…is Robin right? I mean…are we accidentally dating? We do everything together, and we share your bed when I sleep over, and we hold hands.” Saying it all out loud made you laugh in disbelief, and you covered your face with your hands. “God, she is right. You’re my boyfriend who I don’t kiss.”

You felt the swing rock as he shifted to angle his body towards yours, his foot on the porch stabilising it a beat later.

“So why not kiss me?”

Your fingers parted to let you peek at him suspiciously through the gaps, expecting him to be grinning, laughter ready to bubble from his lips. Instead, you found him looking as serious as you had ever seen him.

“That’s not funny,” you said slowly.

He shrugged and reached to move your hands from your face; this time, you let him, and didn’t pull your right hand away when he held onto it loosely. You both kept your eyes on his fingers lacing with yours, even as he started to speak. It seemed easier.

“I’m not joking. Let’s just say that- for the first time in her life- Robin is right, and we’ve been dating each other without realising for years now.” His fingers held yours delicately, his thumb raised so that his hand wasn’t completely closed around yours. “It’s been great, right? If we’re a couple, we’re a fucking great couple and we haven’t even been trying. Just…think how great we could be if we…started trying.”

The hope is his voice made you look up and meet his eyes, his face closer than it was before. Surely you had been this close to him before, but it had never felt like this. It had never felt like dancing along the edge of a cliff and not being afraid of falling.

“Let’s just try, yeah?” he murmured, letting go of your hand in favour of cupping your cheek, the pad of his thumb smoothing over the skin beneath your eye.

Rolling your lips together, you covered his hand with yours and nodded shakily; glancing down, you saw his lips twitch into a smile.

His forehead touched yours and you didn’t hesitate for a second to close your eyes, your fingers slipping down to loosely encircle his wrist. The warmth of his breath on your lips came with the gentle nudge of his nose against yours, and then he was kissing you.

It was a chaste press of closed lips to closed lips, as still and silent as the cool night air that surrounded you both. Kissing Steve was like the final puzzle piece sliding into place, like suddenly remembering where you’d heard that one song before, like solving a riddle you’d been pondering for years. It answered questions you hadn’t thought to ask; all that remained unclear was why it had taken you both so damn long to get there.

Matching giddy smiles bloomed on both of your faces the second your lips left his, mere seconds passing before you were no longer able to resist the urge to cup his cheek and press your smile back to his. The swing lurched with the movement and you were forced to stop, giggling into his shoulder as he tried to balance you both again with his feet planted on the porch. Once the world had stopped swaying, his arms found their way around your shoulders and he nosed at your hairline to encourage you to look at him.

“Well?” he asked quietly, “What do you think?”

Smiling, you pressed your lips to his clothed shoulder before resting your head there.

“Pretty great.”
