It thrives because it promises an unobtainable fantasy. It paints the diversity of the human experience in negatives of chaos and messiness, then promises it can give you uniformity and order. It offers an easy solution to whatever desire that drives you — power, money, control, peace — and it whispers that it’s best achieved through radical violence and elimination of dissent. Insidiously, it creeps into powerful institutions built to consolidate power and control.
