You know Christmas break is gonna be good when you walk in the house for the first time and the kitchen is on fire.

To the universe, this small kindness is nothing. The universe is large, and has no cares. It does not consider the saving of one little moth important. To the moth, the small kindness is also nothing. It does not have the perspective to understand. All it knows is that it is, it cannot be afraid of no longer being. But to you and I? That kindness is everything. In that moment, you are sacred, and that matters far more than the opinions of the universe and the knowledge of the moth.

I pick up the moth from the side of the bath

I want to save it, to gently place it

out of the outstretched window

I take on my most tender form

fingers like a velveteen birdcage

soft like my soul might be

if I can preserve this beauty

I place the moth on the sill

and wait for it to fly

into the beckoning night

it sits ragged and crestfallen

my palms laced with it’s wing pattern
