Meets Merlin who has been working as a detective somewhere -because that’s basically what he did anyway-solving things and helping people, the family business, and Arthur is dragged in, handcuffed, and plopped in an interrogation room or the drunk tank with the cop who found him saying like This wacko thinks he’s some medieval king, go deal with him, and Merlin scoffs and walks in, promptly dropping his files and spilling his coffee when he sees a disheveled and petulant Arthur, who goes Merlin, finally, get me out of here already, will you and Merlin starts crying lmaooo

or c. Meets Merlin who has been working at an ER because, again, he was physician adjacent, and someone drags a wet Arthur in, like Found this, it looks like he might hypothermiate deal with him, and Merlin sees him, drops his files, spills his coffee, and starts crying hahaha

because I’m thinking that’d be fun and probably everyone on tumblr and everyone who knows someone on tumblr would go bonkers over it

listen, i need a “arthur returns” fic where Merlin keeps expecting Arthur to rise from Lake Avalon after all these years and so he builds a house right next to it, but nothing ever happens. It’s okay, he keeps living there and having his cottage there, but at some point he stops hoping and moves away

he keeps the cottage there, of course, and he visits it every year on the anniversary of Arthur’s death

Lake Avalon also becomes a popular romantic getaway sight, and Merlin can’t stand to see all the happy couples constantly

Years later, he meets a reincarnated Arthur, and is incredibly confused as to why Arthur has not risen from the lake like he expected

In modern merthur AUs, I always see Kilgharrah as like, Merlin’s cat, but I feel like a more equivalent role for him would be that fucky guidance counselor who gives terrible, vague advice and who meddles way too much in student’s lives

you know how merlin had that dream of arthur in the caves in s1ep4?? you know how morgana had premonitions/visions of the future while she slept?? you know how arthur and morgana are siblings?? you know how arthur called out merlin’s name in s2ep13 the same way merlin did in s1ep4??

yeah so what if arthur had a mix of the two? arthur dreaming about merlin but not current merlin, future merlin? what if he dreamed of merlin constantly in danger against all the foes he faced alone in the shadows? what if he dreamed of a merlin with golden eyes fighting them off? what if he dreamed of merlin being tortured by a morgana he didn’t recognize who was cold and cruel? what if he dreamed of a merlin holding his dead body on the shore of a lake, screaming and sobbing over his pale, lifeless body? what if he dreamed of a familiar but oh so different merlin in a completely different world that he couldn’t comprehend?

what then?
