just a head’s up that a huge portion of this information comes from dispatch, whom i hate, so… just keep that in mind. mnet basically confirmed the whole thing, though.

tldr; mnet put an incredibly large number of people in danger, with numbers in the hundreds at the very least. there was an extremely large difference in the treatment that actors received and idols/singers/performers received respectively.

here’s where i’ll begin to break down the information for everyone.

the 2020 mnet asian music awards ceremony was held on december 6, 2020. (two days ago as of first posting.) there was no live audience due to the pandemic. however, an incredibly large number of artists (performers and actors alike) along with their staff were present.

on covid: three managers of presenters and actors (lee jungjae’s manager, kwon sangwoo’s manager, park sodam’s manager) have tested positive for the virus. since presenters were inside the building, it would be logical to assume their staff was as well.

i do not know whether the actors or other staff members have received results yet. i did a pretty thorough search and pulled up nothing, but i will update this post with any news if i see some.

the stage was disinfected between every person coming and going, and mics were also sanitized. 

on mismanagement, mistreatment, etc: mama 2020 was an extremely poorly organized event. this is even ignoring the fact that we are in the middle of a pandemic and transmission is picking up exponentially in korea.

with the announcement that the presenter’s manager had tested positive, questions arose about 1) why performers wore masks and presenters didn’t and 2) why presenters were inside when it seems all performers were outside. it does not get better from here.

mama was held in a half finished venue. there weren’t enough waiting rooms for everyone that was there.

presenters/actors were given precedence. they had individually set up rooms, heated and catered.

performers were not given precedence (or humane treatment, for that matter). all except for two artists (it is unclear whether these were solo artists or groups. there are theories but i’m not listing them here because i think it’ll cause tension) were told to wait outside in their cars. mama lasted six hours. temperature reports range from 2° C (35° F) to -3° C (26° F).

performers did not receive catering. they were informed that they could use the cafeteria inside the building, but that’s a shared space and a covid risk, so they got convenience store food or fast food on their own.

performers had to use portable toilets, in the dark, in the parking lot. phone flashlights were used to touch up makeup.

some performers physically could not stay in cars for six hours, and therefore had to rent rooms to stay in nearby.

performers found out about the way presenters were treated via social media.

the majority of performances were pre-recorded. (mnet actually used this fact in its rebuttal but we’ll get to that later.) as such, performers really only went inside the building to accept awards, leaving them outside for hours on end.

certain sources say that the artists readily accepted the proposal to stay outside (due to covid regulations. korea’s on level two).

there is photographic evidence of this, but some of it is from sasaengs and some of it is from dispatch. there is a video of treasure running through the parking lot after receiving their award that i am 99% sure came from a sasaeng. the video has millions of views, which is why i’m mentioning it, but given the questionable at minimum source, i will not be linking it. there are other previews and videos of the parking lot floating around, but i’m trying to avoid them because the majority of them, if not all, are an invasion of privacy.

…basically they said that it was impossible to keep everyone inside due to covid-19 regulations and their solution was to… do what they did.

it’s more eloquent than that. they say that the decision to separate presenters and performers came on the basis of what they did that day. performers pre-recorded and therefore were not in the building for the entirety of the day (just a fourth! but whatever). presenters had rehearsal the day of and therefore were provided waiting rooms.

this is not my translation, but apparently this statement was made. “for actors/actresses, there were many things to prepare in advance, such as scripts. the idols only had to receive awards and share their thoughts.”
