Jeffrey Combs always be giving 110%

was thinking a lot about re-animator again and remembered this deleted scene that makes me feel like a wild animal LIKE. Hm!!!! much to unpack here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like something that gets really lost in the theatrical cut and what gets completely forgotten in “bride” is how clearly Dan actively chooses to side with Herbert and why throwing his lot in with Herbert is appealing to begin with.  There’s definitely more clear motivation here and I feel like it gives Dan a lot more autonomy and solid characterization, and makes the ending of the original movie land more strongly since its easier to see how he follows in those footsteps and picks up the hypo himself. this scene really demonstrates how little Dan can resist Herberts sway, despite pretty much everything around him telling him he should.

re: queer-coding of villains in horror, theres also something to be said about how Herbert seducing Dan to the dark side of re-animation is basically framed as homewrecking, and how Herbert and Meg are basically rivals for Dan’s attentions. Meg is playing an obvious moral center, but in a kind of reactionary way where that morality is also being equated to heteronormative marriage…as usual queer subtext in horror comes with some latent homophobia but i still enjoy this scene a lot. Dans dispassionate and unconvincing “i love you too,” and the way Herbert bodily stands in between them is very satisfying to the goth parts of my freudian id ya know….what can i say i love a love triangle i love drama

this scene also includes jeffrey combs’ very hilarious delivery of the line: “yes, daddy will see that we’re serious”
